Just wondering what everyone''s ideal ring would look like. Keep in mind when giving your description, please use simple terms b/c I''m very new at the terminology. So...what size diamond, what shape, etc...?

I already have mine but I will tell you what my idea ring was before I got mine.

Very simple it was a white gold solitare set with a round stone, preferably 1ct. For my wedding band I wanted a band with diamonds set all around the ring, which is called an eternity band.

When I was little (about 15) I found a ring that I loved and swore it would be mine.
20.gif
It was a princess cut with stones all around the the band of the e-ring and a matching w-ring.

What I got
9.gif
was a round center stone (1.3cts) set in a pave band (small diamonds set into the band 10 on each side of the stone) making a 3/4 eternity band (good for re-sizing if need be). The w-ring matches the band of the e-ring.

My e-ring setting is exactly like that execpt that its only halfway around the band and I hope to get the matching w-ring. I have a .85 ct. round center stone.

So we are ring twins.

I change my mind all the time...

I found a setting that I would die for, but my boyfriend can afford it.
7.gif
So... right now, I''d like a three stone with a trellis setting and a shank that is split half-way down the sides. I''m still debating if I want two-tone gold or white gold. Ideal cut, G/H-SI1 round brilliant stones. It''ll probably be between .50 ct and .75; I''d love to have .75.

Ok, here come my questions (sorry):

What is:
trellis setting
ideal cut
shank split 1/2 way down (I think I know but not positive)
knife edge solitaire (got the solitaire part but not the rest)

Also, why can''t the wedding band be right next to the e-ring? I think i''m missing something.
33.gif

Btw, those sound beautiful!! Anyone have pictures?

Trellis setting would be like this:
threestonetrellis.gif

As opposed to regular prongs:
threestonestraight.gif

Much prettier, don''t you think?
2.gif

The "split shank" means the shank would be split in two until it comes together about half-way down the sides. split shanks
I''d have the gold "rails" on the sides of the stones taken off too so we can see the stones profiles. I''m looking for something delicate that is both traditional and original...
2.gif
We''re still looking, but I have a few ideas!

For the diamond specifications (cut, colour, clarity, carats), I highly recommend reading the tutorials.

Good luck, and have fun researching! I certainly do...

I''ve got three very different dream rings, all must be low set and hopefully easy to fit a w-band flush against. I''m not planning on taking my rings off, so they have to be as comfortable and sturdy as possible.
An added bonus would be an european-style shank which means the bottom of the ring looks more like a rounded square with a circle cut out for the finger. Not only is it comfortable, but it also prevents the ring from rotating due to weight.

1) .4 -.8 round brilliant ideal cut diamond in a bezel or semi bezel mounting that is very modern and sleek. It should either be set flush with the ring body or the shoulders should have some open space when viewed from the side.

2) .5 - .9 Old european cut diamond in an art deco style setting with a lot of romantic metal work but not a lot of little diamonds, as I sincerly dislike pavé. I prefer organic engraving like leaves, wheat, and flowers to engraving that looks like it was attacked by a mad chicken. I like it when the shoulders of the ring have open work/ filligree when viewed from the side

3) A .6 - 1.5 carat blue Sapphire (untreated hopefully) that is well cut with a rich color, set in the x-prong (trellis) style or something similar with an art deco flair, and it should have a line of small ideal cut diamonds channel set on either side of the center stone. I love channel set diamonds as much as I hate pave.
I like sapphires because a) really good sapphires make my knees go weak, and 2) they symbolize loyalty and true love. I think to me, that is a real key concept to being married. Without loyalty there can be no forever.

I would also love a Ruby since it''s my birthstone, but they are soooo expensive lately and sooo hard to find with really good quality.

I think I prefer white gold since I like the shiny look. And if I get a solely diamond ring it would be nice if it went well with a w-band set with sapphires.

.5 RB in a Vatche knife-edge X-Prong or a .75 RB on a Tiffany replica six-prong.

Have you tried on a knife-edge x-prong? I like the look of them, but when I tried one on I found that the knife-edge part kinda bothered my other fingers.

wow!! you guys really know what you want!!

I need to start doing some research!...but maybe that would make the wait seem longer!

All I know is that his budget (from the comments his made about his friends'' purchases) is somewhere between $10K-$12K....so what would that get in terms of size for a round cut
27.gif
?. I would like it to be nice in quality, but not necessarily "top-expert" quality...just nice to the normal eye?

M~

hmmm...hard one.

I don''t love diamonds FOR my engagement ring, but I do love diamond engagement rings as RHR and on other people(if that makes sense)

For diamonds: Ideally, a very simple platinum setting a la tiffany or cartier 1895 with a 1.5-2 ct emerald cut with bullet sides. Mmmmm.

For my ering: ceylon sapphire about 2-2.5 ct, cushion cut, no sidestones, in an antique platinum setting with floral engraving and pave.

This:

with no pave on the sides, just the top, and a very simple touch of engraving instead. *sigh* I know I''m not getting anything close to that puppy, but a girl can dream

Oh HONEY ... that''s a GREAT budget. Start a''dreaming ASAP! Anytime you have a question about a term you can type it into the "search" box & see what comes up.

This has almost every ring everyone at Pricescope has ever gotten ... picture, description, stats about the stone etc....

I have noticed very few people seem to love emerald cuts...asshers, yes, but not straight emeralds.

I think you said you liked rounds, but if you enjoy emerald it could be a nice way to go unique without an extremely unique setting.

Great budget!

Great budget!

When my husband first asked me what kind of engagement ring I thought I would like, my immediate response (although never having thought about it before...I didn''t think I was the "marrying" type) was "a 2 c. EC emerald with side diamonds!" He replied back, "oh, I was thinking a diamond set in platinum, a couple carats." Wow, did we have different ideas!

First off, I LOVE emeralds. They''re my birthstone (or so says the jewelry industry), my favorite movie ever is the Wizard of Oz, and I just love their botanical, yet regal, look. An rectangular EC is the only shape I would ever consider wearing as a ring...personal pref.

Second, I had no idea when I met him 4 years ago that it was actually becoming "normal" to wear a platinum e-ring. I''m from a small Midwestern town and had always thought plat. was kind of an elite thing that I would not own for many years. So at the very mention of "platinum" and "a couple carats" I was totally salivating. I''d grown up absolutely loving jewelry, but didn''t even begin to develop an understanding of what was out there and what was possible until a. I met him, and b. I found PS!

I ended up discussing the matter further with him shortly before we were engaged. He asked me what shape I liked for a diamond, and I told him I was most attracted to RB''s. He proposed to me with a 1.5 J/SI1 RB set in a classic 2mm 4 prong band. I knew it wasn''t 2 c. as soon as I saw it, but I didn''t care one bit. He gave me the GIA cert. the next day, but I had no idea what any of it meant until finding PS almost 2 years later! He''d done his homework, though, and I have a diamond that I''m very happy with!

For my 30th b-day, I am "requesting" an EC emerald RHR...I''ll let you all know how THAT goes. I''ve been planting some seeds and ideas here and there, though, and usually when I do that he takes the hint and runs with it, so here''s hoping!

As far as the prevalence of EC lovers here on PS, no, you don''t see a lot...but IMO that''s a good thing. Makes the few that are out there stand out in the crowd! I think they''re one of the more "classic" cuts, not as trendy as some of the fancy shapes, and very elegant and sophisticated.

I forgot a ring.
I just love Mark Morrell's tiffany style ring with the heart prong.
30.gif
I actually vastly preferr it in yellow gold with a plat head.
30.gif

There's a .75 H SI on whiteflash that would look amazing in that setting which we might be able to afford in the fall. (keeping fingers crossed for post-phd raise this summer, at this point keeping fingers crossed for just the post part *heh*). Oh, be still my beating heat! *whimper*
But back to you
2.gif
you could swing, say, a 1.51 J VS1 with the mark Morrell in either all platinum or the combo.
Here it is:

a beautiful cut 1.5 ct H SI-1.

My ideal ring changes all the time. When he first mentioned getting engaged I had my heart set on a 3 stone ring. I absolutely hated the look of a solitaire. That was before I found PS!!!

Now I am kind of torn between 2 styles:

1. split shank (with a RB or ascher/princess/cushion)

2. antique setting-- with engraving?

For sure the ring will have to white gold or platinum (leaning toward white gold right now) because yellow gold makes my skin look really gross.
We haven''t gone window shopping yet so I''m not sure what I will like for sure on my fingers. I''m betting that will cement one of the 2 styles.
I''m guessing once we go shopping I will point out the stuff I like and leave it to him.
9.gif
He has pretty good taste and that way it would still be a big surprise!
Now if I could only speed up the whole shopping process..... hmmmmmmmmm
11.gif

Before we got engaged- I ONLY wanted a Cushion cut soliaire- that''s all I talked about, all I drooled over. Once, I made it to the jewelery store and tried on a bunch of things I did a complete 180 and ended up with this beauty!

Your my Favorite!.jpg

Ooo- Indi that ring is GORGEOUS!!!

Well, i''m not surprised that everyone has waaay more info. on what they like than I do. It''s fun reading/seeing what others like and it gives me ideas.
Virgina and Anchor, thanks for the pictures and answers. That helped a lot! I did a bunch of research today to get an idea of different shapes and settings..there are just SO many. It''s easier to figure out for me what I don''t like.
Mandarine, you''ve got a great budget so i''m sure you''ll find what you''re looking for. I''m not exactly sure what "my" budget is but probably quite a bit less. I don''t think he has $ saved for this but who knows. The settings that I think I like (before trying any on) are in the $500-$800 range and then I am thinking of a diamond around .75 to 1 carat, round diamond. I really have no idea if that''s what he''s thinking, but I have sent him links to stuff in that range. I''m clearly going to have to have a realistic talk w/him so I get an idea.
Cailet, I think my choices are very similar to yours. I love the antique style rings i''ve seen online. I''d like to try some on but not sure how to find that type in stores. I have plenty of time to look around though. Have you seen any that you like so far? I also really like the split shank rings from the link Anchor provided. I don''t know if i''ll find that to be too much when trying it on though. It''s really hard to know just from the picture.
Virginia, the ring you like is beautiful! I hadn''t ever thought of anything like that. I usually don''t like the ones w/2 sidestones but that is so pretty.

Amy I really liked the styles I saw at faycullen.com
http://www.faycullen.com/antique_engagement_rings/800/cgr1109r2d.html

http://www.faycullen.com/antique_engagement_rings/800/c130r8d.html

those are just 2 that I like. I''m not sure of the stone size - I think I would like around 1 ct but without having actually tried on rings it is hard to say what will look good on my fingers. I just really like the open almost split shank settings on the 2 attached.

There were some other sites I really liked too, but now I can''t seem to find them.... hmmm I''ll have to do some more hunting
9.gif

I asked my friend to go with me ring "shopping"...really more just like looking around!....she said it would be kind of fun so we might go soon!..

Let me say again...the 10k-12K budget is what I *think* his budget is...from comments his made on other people''s rings....so I am being hopefull
9.gif
...and his real budget might not be exactly that!.....but hey...I can still dream!
17.gif
. I haven''t asked him what his budget is though...and I wouldn''t ask him, regardless of what his budget is I am more excited about the whole getting engaged deal!...the ring is more a symbol...I just want to make sure his idea of a nice ring is aligned with my idea
4.gif

I don''t think he knows much about diamond at all (not that I do, but I''m learning!)...so I will definetely coach him later on.

Anyway....all of your rings and dreams rings are absolutely gorgeous!!!. After I do some reserach I will let you know what my ideal ring would look like
16.gif

You guys have a nice weekend!

All I ever wanted as an Ering was a classic RB 3-stone with white baskets and a yellow gold band, at least 1.0tcw, but no bigger than about 1.80tcw. And this is what my gorgeous FH presented me with
30.gif
30.gif
30.gif

It''s 1.55tcw, 18ct yellow and white gold.

EringOnAngleAndi.jpg

I could see myself having two diamond rings for life:

1. Cushion cut (1.5 carats) with pave halo and pave band, think leon. Hopefully this will be my engagement ring.

2. More modern setting for a 2-2.75 carat round brilliant -- 4 prong simple platinum.

I really like emerald cuts too, but I especially love them when they are larger carat weight, lke 2+ carats

This is what I would like:
01TT12.jpg

I''d love anything at this point, I just want the ring! BUT, if I had to pick one I''d either like a solitaire princess in a plain platinum setting or a round brillant solitaire in a platinum with pave'' setting.

A few months ago I saw a pave'' setting in a local jewelers store that I fell in love with. My sister and I were having a birthstone ring designed for my mother and my bf came with me one time when I was getting ideas for a setting. As I was looking at settings I saw the pave'' one and just about died. I was drooling over it when my bf asked me if that was the one for my mom''s ring. I said no because it was a perfect setting for an engagement ring, not a right hand ring. I quickly added how that is exactly what I wanted for my engagement ring and then just as quickly changed the subject so he wouldn''t feel pressured (he gets really upset if he feels like I''m pressuring him the big baby!). I kept going back to the setting and commenting how gorgeous it was (I wanted to drop hints that I wanted it!). I hope it worked!
