I''m getting a dog! I pick her up this thursday and I''m beyond excited.

I am going to buy her a pet tag tommorow and am not sure what info to put on it.

I though it would be her name with my home number cell number and address. Is there any reason to put my name or my last name on the tag? If figure if someone finds her they woul call the numbers and use my dog''s name as listed on the tag?

I''m thinking:

dog name
my cell number
my home number
my address

What do you all think?

Also, what are thoughts on microchipping? We have a vet appointment on Friday.

We have ours microchipped.

We didn''t want to put all our info on their tags, so they have their names, FI''s phone number, and our city and state but not the exact address.

Did you choose to leave your address off for security reasons or because it did not fit?

So you don''t have your names, just the pet''s name?

Yes - we weren't comfortable putting all our contact info on the tag.

That makes sense.

I''m thinking that perhaps this might be a good format. And then if I ever change either of my phone numbers I''ll just get a new tag. Plus microchipping for additional piece of mind.

Dog name
cell number
home number
city
state

Nice

Just one more thing - if you're definitely getting her microchipped, perhaps add "microchip" or the name of the chip brand on the other side? Some places allow you to print on the front and back of the tag, and sometimes people don't know to get lost pets checked for chips - though if they take them into a vet or shelter they'll certainly know to check there.

Congrats on your new dog, btw!!!

We have:

PetName OurLastName
My phone number
MyName & HisName

The only things on our pet''s tags are our phone numbers and "I am microchipped"

I just checked because I had no recollection...

Cat Name
My Full Name
Full Address
Cell Phone Number

I don''t remember putting a lot of thought into it, though. :)

We were always told over here never to put the pets name down on the tag, just our surname, so on Amber's tags (she has four attached to her collar) we have:

1st one- our surname, home number, 2 mobile numbers and reward

2nd one- "scan me I'm microchipped"

3rd one-two more sets of mobile numbers

4th one- pet trace and her pet trace identification number.

I'd definitely get your new baby microchipped. I work in a vets and it's such a relief when a stray comes in and we find a chip number and get in contact with the owner.

Dog''s name
our phone#
vet''s phone#
microchip #

We added the vet''s # in case something happened to him, the vet''s practice has his history. Plis he is microchipped.

I know somebody, whose dog''s microchip migrated, so it is a good idea to have this info on the tag.

I''ve never bothered with the pet''s name (if it''s lost, I think the least of our problems is whether or not people are addressing it properly).

So it''s always been my last name, my phone number, and my address - all the info. that could get it back to me.

And a big YES to microchipping - I think it''s priceless.

Cat''s name
My Number
His Number

That''s all that would fit :)

We gave up on pet tags a long time ago. The dogs chewed them when they were bored. We have each of our dogs names and our home phone number embroidered onto their collars and leashes, and they are also micro-chipped. But you have to remember that micro-chipping only works if the local authority that picks up your lost dog has a scanner at their disposal. Believe it or not, some small towns still don''t have one.

With my last dog we did put our address on it reasons being: a) we lived in a pretty safe town and b) chances are(for our dog at least) if the dog wanders off it would very local, couple of blocks tops. For some people its easier to just look at the tag and walk the dog back rather than go inside and get their phones while trying to keep the dog in their yard, and perhaps you aren't near your phone etc. That's what worked for us.

Also if at any point in your dogs life it has any special needs, make a new tag for that. For example our dog went blind so we got him a tag that said something along the lines of "Hi, I'm Bowie. I'm blind. Please take me home."

ETA: Also be persistent about making it wear the tags. A mircochip is a wonderful thing, but don't rely on it completely. I found 2 lost dogs a few months ago on a Sunday and all the local vets/city animal control were closed... microchip is not a whole lot of good in that case.

The pet's first name, our telephone number, and REWARD in all caps.

Yup--I wouldn''t rely completely on microchips.

Daisy is not chipped. She has 2 tags, one with my parents'' address and my cell number (their property is the only place I allow her off leash) and one with my address and cell. If she travels with me I have one made with the address of a rental, etc.

There is a company that makes tags and all the tag has is a 1-800 # and then a serial number. If your dog is lost then the person who finds it calls the 800 number and gives the serial number and the company then calls you. That way every person that reads your dogs tag doesnt have your information. I have it for my kitty that goes outside. I can get the company name for you if you are interested.

Wow, those are some fancy dog tags. We got ours at PetSmart and there''s only room for 3 lines! We have our dog''s name (why, I don''t know

), our city and phone number.

While on the topic of microchipping, does anyone know how to update the info if you move?

I put cell number and home address. The pet''s name should NOT be put on the tag, because it''s said that if a person finds a pet, they may be more inclined to develop an attachment to the animal if they know its name.

My cat is microchipped, but I''m not sure about that one. How many people would take the time to take a pet to a place to have it checked for a chip? My kitty came microchipped and if I get another, I would do it b/c it''s what, $15?, but still I''m not sure if it helps any.

Everyone in my neighborhood knows my dogs since I walk them constantly and we live in a pretty rural area. If my dogs were loose in my neighborhood, folks would know where they belong. If you walk your dog, it''s always a good idea to make pleasantries with people you encounter in the neighborhood, at least smile and wave to folks you see. It could come in handy some day if your dog were to get loose.

My pups have a microchip tag and their ID tag says:

I''m lost & very loved!
$ reward for my return $
phone #
phone #

That's a great idea about putting on the tag about microchip info.

Where did you get your cat's chip from? You can call the vet or organization. I DO have the info since my cat was adopted less then a month ago and will find the info in case others don't post. Since we're moving, my cat's file is out about here somewhere so when I come across it, I'll post the number.

Just as as side note - my cats have lost every collar they've had. We've spend $100+ on our last four cats before giving up.

A shelter or vet certainly would check, and that is the first place someone should bring a found pet.

Yeah, of course. I just don''t think a lot of people would make the effort. Many are not pet lovers like us on PS are.

I registered online with the microchip company (mine is HomeAgain). Here you can update all your info plus your pet''s info and add a photo.

Kidding, kidding! But I''m surprised about the people treating dog collar info like it''s an avenue to identity fraud; have you been thinking those people who stop their cars and band together to halt traffic when there''s a scared dog running in the street aren''t animal-lovers, but felonious fraudsters who think they''ve finally found their mark?

Hee. The anonymous post along similar lines above was mine - I love your phrasing here! Also, it makes me think of the original "That Darned Cat," which makes me happy.

I would not put my address. Pet''s name, my name and cell.

Just last month I came across a loose dog running in the street while I was walking my dog. Thankfully it had a collar and tag, and the tag had address and phone number. The house was about 200 yards away. I brought the dog to the address and met a very surprised housewife who answered the door; a quick tour revealed that the new pool guy hadn''t closed the gate when he left. This experience was nearly identical to one I had about a year ago as well.

Without the address, I as rescuer would have suddenly had a host of problems on my hands: do I call animal control and wait for a few hours for them to arrive, as well as running the risk that the dog isn''t microchipped and will be put to sleep? Do I bring him home and try to set up a separate area and run the risk of my dog catching something from the possible stray overnight and in the time the local vet''s office opens in the morning? What do I do then if there isn''t a chip? Will my next few days involve making and posting found dog signs within a 5 mile radius? But since there was an address, the dog was safe at home within minutes.

Ergo, that''s the type of experience which convinced me to put phone and address on my own dog''s collar.
