I''m trying to figure out what a "Belgian Cut" diamond is and why is it so expensive? What other cuts could compare that would be more affordable?

This is to help out a friend that works part time and attends college still. His intended is hung up on a $12,000 Belgian Cut ring she saw. WAY out of his range!!

Thanks for input and suggestions.

The "belgian cut" appears to be a branded "ideal cut". the sample I found in smack among the rings sold by Amazon.com. Not that the company is not great, but they have some of the looser standards for quality. The respective name does not help much make sure the stone really is of top cut quality - at the very least that the sellers do not take any further step to explain what the brand stands for....

As for the price, I may understand your complaint: 1.5 (this means 1.45-1.55) cts, I/J clarity, SI (Si1 or Si2), EGL certified, ges for 12k. Nope

The setting presented is at most $500 (not to say $100) and simmilar stones get listed here for $5000. Not that I would go for such an item at all, but this is it

It seems that your girl saw an ideal cut round diamond, probably with some H&A pattern showing. No need for a brand name to get the respective quality. A certain (rather tight) range of cut proportions insure the respective look for a round brilliant, so there can't be much variation among the stone which make the cut, regardless of brand names. True enough, one seller could promote more or less strict symmetry and tight proportions but, ultimately, anything within the respective range would take the light for a ride in a spectacular way. I can't blame your girl for liking what she saw

Anyway, I do not know what were the specs (color, clarity, weight, size) of the stone that scared you, but judging for the respective Amazon quote, You would be looking for a 1/4-1/5cts H&A stone, say I/VS2-SI1. Here's one EXAMPLE.

If this sounds right, the PS way works by mean of providing alternatives and commenting them as LONG as you'd allow

for bette or worse.

BTW, I was showing the stone, not necesarily the seller, there are many more getting positive feedback here all the time.

The term 'Belgian-cut' has no true meaning. It may mean that the seller thinks that it is cut in Belgium, but that says nothing about the quality, not even about the shape.

Live long,

Paul

Paul, I am glad to see your post...

The quote for that stone did seem a bit amazing. Wasn't Amazon supposed to beat everybody at the price game ? If ti was a small shop with greta servcie... but 100% premium to get the thing FedEx????

She had gone to a mall store and I think they are trying to take advantage of inexperience. They told her to give him the card and they could "deal" Yeah right...

I will get the specs next time I see him, they are on the back of the card. I know with all of your great help, we can find a wonderful ring that will sparkle and she will be tickled with it!

As for age... he is 24 and she is younger than he is. He works part time in the bookstore next door to my bridal shop and is finishing up college. Not exactly rolling in the dough. He'd like to get her something very nice for his budget... I'm guessing $2K max.

Mine is less than that, but I love it because my husband picked it for me and it represents our love... I'm not very materialistic, but I can appreciate beautiful things.

Thanks again!

A Belgian Cut is a very fine type of beer, and probably worth every penny. After all the Trappist Monks from Belguim found this was the stairway to Heaven.
How much would you pay for a guaranteed birth in paradise?
How much would you pay for peace on earth (blissfully drunk peace)?

How much would you pay for a Tiffany diamond (which may or may not be as good or better then the Belgian diamond)?

And if you are a guy, how much would your beloved prefer you spent on a diamond, or perfume, or underwear?
Zales? Drug store? Walmart?

And can you decide how much someone else should pay for something?

The one with the "stairway to Haven" was good, but this is even better

Just like monks claim to know the first, economists claim the second ( a 70k question

) Taugh choice between them anyway...

All good points...

However, I am not deciding how much he should spend on a diamond.

It is a fact told to me that it is impossible for him to come up with those kinds of funds for a diamond and I told him I'd try to help him find something she will love that he can provide. I figured if anyone could help, it would be the fine posters here at pricescope.

I will get actual specs so we can get more specific on the alternatives available.

Cut Nut, what is it that puts the Belgian Cut on a plane higher than the others?

I am assuming you are familiar with it. Is there something similar that would compare and be more affordable? Is it ettiquette for a girl to ask to see the actual price tag of her ring?

What ever happened to a girl giving an idea of what she likes and the boy surprising her with the best he can afford?

Thank you again!
