I'm sure that many will have a more educationally worded answer but simply put to my knowledge it's a bunch of smaller diamonds put together that can be put around a diamond to make it look larger than it is, or it can be placed togther and sometimes bunched up to look like one large diamond. If you google it lots of things will pop up.
Usually done with smaller stones, this is an expanded view of the technique.
Surfaces are totally covered in diamonds, or "paved'', with very little metal showing between them.
The stones are set by carving the metal that surrounds them, which is different than similar looking techniques, where settings are created during the model making.
Not meant to look like a larger diamond at all. It is a way of adorning plain surfaces, in the same way that decorative engraving is.
In fact, it is a form of engraving, where holes are created to plug with diamonds and engraving tools are used to move the surrounding metal into a configuration that is pleasing to the eye and holds the multitude of stones securely.
