What is the most comfortable ring for sensitive fingers?

I know this is an odd question but I've been struggling to find a ring I can wear on my left hand ring finger without pain for nearly 5 years. I have an annoying impinged nerve problem that causes sensitivity and irritation in my left ring finger. I'm considering resetting my ering for my right hand since many days I can't wear it due to pain. My original wedding band is a 3mm half dome platinum band. I have trouble wearing it since the inside edges are pointy. I've tried narrower comfort fit rings but the thickness of these bands is even more irritating. I want to find a ring I can actually wear but don't know what else to look at. I've seen rings online called euro comfort fit that don't look as high domed but can't find them locally to try. I'm also wondering if palladium or gold might be more comfortable since it is lighter. Any suggestions you have are greatly appreciated since I'm so frustrated with this!

It sounds like the pain comes from wearing the rings, and not from putting them on, yes? Because if it was putting them on that was the problem, they sell hinged rings for arthritis sufferers. If it's wearing them, and comfort-fit is still setting off the pain ... I dunno. Could you pinpoint what hurts? Is it the inner edge of the ring on the finger you're wearing it on, or the way the ring presses against your other fingers, or ...? Because from your description, it sounds like both, which makes me think a ring with a comfort-fit inner circumfrence and a pipe-cut exterior might be better. Euro-shank won't help: that just means it's squared off on bottom to stop spinning.

I hope you find a solution, but I've got to say, if it were me? I'd be wearing my rings on my right hand, pain-free. If it's a question of tradition, there are many (perhaps even a majority!) of places in the world where the wedding set is worn on the right hand ....

Could you get something very flat, or would the edges be too sharp? Something like these flat comfort-fit bands:

I'm thinking you could have someone from Etsy make you a thin/flat band if those wouldn't be flat enough.

My other thought is, are your rings sized correctly? Because when I try to wear rings that are too large, it causes a kind of pinching feeling with my other fingers. I feel for you since I have very sensitive skin and scratchy rings are unwearable. :?

ETA: this ring is only 1.5mm thick: http://www.e-weddingbands.com/store/product132357.html as are many of the 10k gold rings on that site.

Thanks for the tips... Most of the pain seems to come from the way rings seem to pressure my index and pinkie fingers so I think the thickness of the rings definately is a factor. The ring finger is sensitive though so non rounded inside edges hurt. I guess I need a VERY low profile comfort fit ring. Though it isn't my first choice, I can live with wearing my ering on my right hand but my left hand would feel naked with nothing. :(

If you are okay with a very plain ring, just to have something on your finger, you can try a rounded 1 mm "spacer" ring. There is a thread here, and it looks like the one from "Jeweler on the Roof" on Etsy is rounded:

If you want something more decorative, a custom ring with a 1 mm "bottom" shank (to keep it very thin), a thicker "top" decorative shank, and a Euro shank (to keep it from spinning), may work. For the top "decorative" portion, you could have anything as long as it did not extend to touch your other fingers. The Euro shank will keep the upper decorative portion of the ring from rotating and touching or getting between your fingers.

I've pasted a ring design below that could be modified (with a thinner bottom shank, and pave only on top of your finger):

You could also have a transitional design element like a little "cuff" where the thinner bottom shank meets the thicker top shank for aesthetic reasons, and allow for easier replacement of the bottom shank. The thinness of the bottom shank would make that part of the ring more prone to bending/warping. Here's an example of a platform ring from James Meyer with cuffs: http://www.jamesmeyerjewelry.com/engage_rings.htm

I recommend getting this custom made in silver first with semi-precious stones to test it out. Many PSers have had good luck with DanielM on Etsy. He works in everything from silver and semiprecious stones to gold with diamonds.

Thank you ladies for all your great and creative solutions!! Cookie, your ring is pretty... Is it like a pipe cut band? Are the inside edges rounded? I love the bands on his site with scattered diamonds but think they may be too thick. I'll have to explore more of his work.

If I were you I'd wear my wedding rings on the right hand like they do in some European counties.

Thank you lasposa. Both the inside and outside edges are rounded. It doesn't have any sharp edge, and it is hand-forged. Sorry I am not exactly sure what a pipe cut band is.

About metal choice -- Mine is in 18k unplated white gold with 3 platinum wraps, 3mm wide. It feels much lighter than my 2.6mm fully round platinum band. When I wear the 3mm flat band, it feels like part of my body. I only notice its existence when my pinky or my middle finger touches the wrap. The 2.6mm platinum band is not as comfotable. The hefty weight puts quite some pressure on the nerves and blood vessels. Given your situation, I think your finger will be happier with a gold band.

Also, Jim makes rings/bands to order. He should be able to make the band in a width you prefer. Hope that helps!

Thank you again Cookie! I can see how the lighter gold would be more comfortable than platinum. I will definately look into James Meyer's work. I've never heard of unplated white gold so am off to research this too.

You are welcome lasposa. Unplated white gold is just white gold without the rhodium plating. By default, the manufacturers/jewelers dip the finished white gold jewelry pieces (rings, bands, earrings, etc) in the rhodium plating solution to make them look super bright and white. The rhodium plating does wear off over time, and eventually you will see the true color of the white gold, which is creamy, maybe a bit yellowish, depending on what white gold alloy was used to make the piece. If you want your ring to stay bright and white, you will need to re-plate it from time to time. Any jeweler should be able to do that for you.
