What is visual difference between 8.8mm round vs 9.0-9.2?

Hello PS experts!

I would like to call upon the experts regarding the visual difference between an excellent cut 8.8mm round (approx. 2.5 +) versus an excellent cut 9.0mm to 9.2mm round (approx. 3.0 carat) diamond. There seems to be a significant price jump - I really want the look of a 3 carat.

In your opinion, when set, could an 8.8mm have the same visual appearance as a 3 carat stone? My ring size is between 4.75 and 5.

Is .4mm difference in diameter significant or insignificant in larger round stones in this size range?

What diameter/millimeters begins be close in appearance to a 3 carat?

Thank you in advance for any help and/or suggestions! =)

It doesn't sound like a large visual difference between 8.8 mm to 9.2 m however it really is quite noticable. You can drawn it out on a piece of paper with a compass to see how large a difference it really is. 9 mm is traditionally a 3.00 ct. size range however remember 3.00 ct. is a weight not a size. So it is possible to get a 3.00 ct. that doesn't measure out to 9.00 mm.

IMO 0.4mm is a memorable size difference. I don't find the size difference memorable when the difference is 0.2mm or less.

I am no expert, but I came up with some what ifs that I believe would amplify or decrease the difference in diameter. I would say the setting plays a part as well in difference in appearance. In a solitaire, some think .4 mm is a very noticeable difference. But in an illusion setting, not so much. Also, if you are looking at a 9.2 mm versus an 8.8, maybe you can see a difference...8.8-9.0, not so much. It is a few strands of hair width difference.
I know that having that 9.0+ mm mark is a mind clean thing for some, so that may also be the real question. Is the extra hike in price worth paying to get what you really want. It sounds like you want above 9.0mm. Regarding the "appearance" of a 3ct., people will have no idea from a 8.5 mm up (at least those that are not on PS  ). Most of my friends thought my 8.5-8.7 was a 3ct. It is a 2.43 (old cut diamond).

Hope this helps!

At that carat weight and spread, a .4mm difference is not particularly noticable to me.

Thank you so much everyone! Every bit if your advice is more helpful than you know! I think if I get an ideal cut stone with lots of sparkle measuring at least 8.8mm round I will get the look I want. You're all awesome! 8-)

I have an 8.9mm. The size difference between my stone and a 3ct 9.2mm-ish is visible and memorable to me, possibly only because I live with it. The price difference is also visible and memorable :cheeky: it would not be worth it to me - an 8.8mm is a BIG stone, 9.2mm is ever so slightly bigger but both are in EQUALLY BIG territory - it's not like you're jumping an order of magnitude ::)

Re: What is visual difference between 8.8mm round vs 9.0-9.2

i'm not sure if this will be helpful, but when i was deciding between 1.7 v. 2 carats, I took these pictures. one is a 1.7 ct at about 7.7 or 7.75 mm, and the other is a 2 ct that was probably about 8.1 or 8.15 mm. the diameter difference is also about 0.3 to 0.4 mm, so the pics can give you an idea of the proportional difference between stones differing in diameter by that amount (which is the same amount you were asking about).
