What size is this diamond

There is someone I watch on a local show, she has been so kind to tell me the size of her stone, she says it’s a 2 carat.

I feel it looks much larger than a 2 carat, so maybe the better question is, what size would achieve this look on a size 5 finger.

Thank you!

My 2.34 on a size 5 looks pretty big

My 2.34 on a size 5 looks pretty big

This is a 2 carat (top) next to my 1.43. Then the 2 carat alone.

It doesn’t seem to cover as much as hers does, do you think a 2.5-3 would be more similar?

I'd guess your inspo diamond is in the 2.5 - 2.9 range.

"Dainty", my 2.5 ct CBI, on my size 4.5 finger, looks a tiny bit (but not much) larger than your inspo pic.

Of the three photos below, I believe the last one most closely resembles what the *human eye* sees (not what a camera lens sees which can distort perspective and relative size). The middle photo looks much larger than what I see when looking at the ring on my hand in person.

(And to be completely honest, I've been feeling DSS. I didn't originally think I'd want to go any larger...but once I got accustomed to the size, now I do!)

Wow, i have a size 4.25 finger and my diamond is 2.5 carat and it looks smaller to me than the others posting and the inspo pics. Maybe it's the cathedral setting? When i saw your inspo pics I assumed it was close to 3 carat. Maybe I have "diamond dysmorphia" when it's on my own hand :P2

If yours appears smaller to you, it may have a different mm spread. If you are talking about the one in your avatar, then its an OEC, right?

What band, if any, do you pair it with.

I don't wear anything with it. I'm not into stacking rings. I wear my band on my other hand.

Your ring is perfection - and yes, you're correct, OEC, 8.56mm spread... mentally i always thought 2 carat = 8mm, 3 carat = 9mm but I feel like everyone's hands and perceptions are different.

@breanne I feel like you have to try them on and see them on your own hand to see how your eyes will perceive it. That 2 carat looks stunning on you! I always thought i wanted 3 ct but then I got 2.5 and feel like it's actually perfect for me. Can you try on 2.5 and 2.9 anywhere? Again, I do love that 2 ct on you, and in the one picture with it alone it looks like your inspo pic, but in the pic with your 1.43 the 2 ct looked smaller than the inspo pic to me

Sometimes I think that stacking bands makes a ring appear smaller! I think bc it distracts the eye?

I agree, the band width can cause the visual effect of making the stone appear smaller.

Not to derail this thread but omg, I just want to say again how much I love Dainty. Any chance of adding sides to make the world’s most amazing three stone???

Is it my imagination, or does the camera also make a stone look larger? My (no-where near this size) stone looks average on my hand in real life, but when I see it in pictures it looks much larger (and I secretly hope that it looks this large to the casual observer too;-)

Yes, it absolutely does. Imagine, on a much smaller scale, your diamond as the person and your hand as the buildings.

A wide-angle lens will do this for sure -- and all phones have wide-angle lenses. This is the opposite of a telephoto, which "telecompresses." Photographers never use a wide-angle lens for portraiture because it exaggerates the size of whatever is closest to the lens (think: giant nose). So, yes, the wider the lens and the closer you are to your subject (and the worst-case scenario would seem to be close-up jewelry photos on a smartphone), the greater the exaggeration.

Awww...thanks Madame Tonks!

Yes, I have all different possible schemes!

One is I'm considering getting a small-ish ACA for Xmas to wear as a pendant necklace until I can grow it to a 1.25 ct, D, VVS to use as a side stone for Dainty. (I set on a 1-2-1 ratio -- don't care for the look of small sides). I'd do this with two small diamond pendants, one in platinum and one in YG. Let them ripen as necklaces until I can put them into a ring.

Another scheme is buying an ACA, like above, but only one, and growing it until it catches up with Dainty, and then making them a pair of incredible studs.

Final scheme, start growing an EC as a pendant, and when it reaches a good size, use it as an ER and move Dainty to a pendant.

Now I just need funding  (or possibly a lobotomy!)

Dainty is SO gorgeous!!! I love the idea of a 3 stone for you! But honestly, you don't have room on your small finger to add two 1.25ct sides to Dainty! I wear a 5.5 and it would extend beyond the diameter of the top of my finger . Please try on some combos before you make this decision (I am sure you plan to do so!). 1-2-1 is regarding weight which really isn't as meaningful as diameter percentages. You probably already have this, but just in case....

As to the question in the original post, I think around 2.5 cts would achieve the look you are wanting!

RWS-I love how you have plotted out all the scenarios!

OP Here’s 8.8 mm (2.6 ct ish) versus 9.2 mm (3 ct) on size 5 fingers.

Oh my goodness I love this. You are literally growing diamonds like they are on trees.
One question, though–I get how you would do this with ACAs with the upgrade policy. How would you manage it with an EC? Does anyone have upgrade policies on those? That would be amazing!

Oh, idk, DS, I think she could manage! I have never forgotten the three stone to end all three stones that has made me think “if it fits, you can wear it.”

Behold:

3.20 center, 2.3 sides. Size 6.5 finger. I tell you truly, I would wear the hell out of this.

To OP, to get the look you are after, I suspect something like 2.5 carats on a size 5 would be perfect. If you haven’t already played around with diamdb.com , you should. It has a feature where you can plug in dimensions of a stone and it will show them to you on your size finger. If you go to Whiteflash you can get some example dimensions of stones in various sizes and see what those would look like. Then there is always the “cut out a paper dot that size and stick it on your finger” method to see it in real life.

Carat weight will matter far less than mm spread, so this is how I would do it. Hope that helps!

Hey DS :wavey:

I like the chart, thanks for posting it!

I haven't decided anything yet, so don't worry! I just like to run all the scenarios in my head. Thinking about sparklies at night as I drift off to sleep sure beats counting sheep.

In terms of being able to fit three diamonds on my finger given those sizes (approx 1.25 ct - 2.5 ct - 1.25 ct) -- yes it can be done!

For several months there was a ring exactly this size at the Tiffany's in the Galleria in Houston. I visited it a several times (the SA's probably rolled their eyes when they saw me coming LOL). It fit beautifully -- a perfect arch across my finger. And it was surprisingly more comfortable than my solitaire because there was zero spinning or flopping side to side like I currently get.

Having diamonds this large fit on my scrawny finger is really all about the height of the arch and angle of the side stones. If I were to decide to proceed with a 3 stone, I'd use a bench that creates a wax model first and get the arch/stone angles perfected.

Over the years I've purchased a variety of sizes of CZs and play with the different sizes on my finger as sides. So I know I just don't care for the look of sides smaller than an approximate 1-2-1 (ct weight) ratio. I like larger sides too, but figure the 1-2-1 is as large as I could comfortably go.

BUT, I do really love a classic solitaire -- I cant get past the simple elegance of it. So these are all just scenarios in my head for now. ;)2

And don't forget @LLJsmom absolutely gorgeous 3 stone ring! If I remember correctly, the diamonds are approx the same size we're discussing and I believer her ring size is the same as mine too!

Hi!! :wavey:
Did I hear three stone with big sides? Present.
Seriously though I do love my big sides. No regrets. 1.2-2.47-1.11. They all fit with room. Steven made the setting higher than necessary actually. The trellis coils have been lower and it would still fit with room. My finger is a 4.75 nowadays. (Knuckle). I made the ring a 5 so I can stack and when I forget to take it off before sleeping I won’t have issues with taking it off in the morning. I wear a Snuggie sometimes. (Plastic coils). DSS has hit and I think I could go for a larger center but I love this stone and I can afford a 3 carat E. So I’m living with this stone. (The tragedy…). Here are some pics of the profile so you. Can see how much room I have on the sides.

Hope these help.

I adore your ring!!!

Thanks so much for posting those pics of the profile -- seriously helpful! (And fun eye candy too.)

DSS is such a funny thing (and so real!) Your ring seems huge to the rest of us, but, *sigh* I totally understand having it seem to shrink before your own eyes.

First off -- OMG that antique three stone! Where did you find it? (And why didn't it follow you home?)

To answer your question about how to go about an EC or other fancy shaped upgrade, the only options I know of are Blue Nile / James Allen, or a brick and mortar jewelry store with an upgrade policy. I would go in knowing the policy would make upgrading a pain, and have more restrictions that at WF, but at least with patience and planning I could do it.
