We keep adding to the list of things that we can''t say in the house. First it was HUNGRY because we would always get The Demon excited about eating his dinner by asking if he was hungry. Then it was TREAT. (Now we call them SNACKS--until he catches on to that!) And now not only does he know WALK but he knows when we spell W-A-L-K too.

We had some people over last weekend and they said all three words (completely by accident and unrealated to The Demon) in about a 30 second span. He was crazed and they didn''t understand why!

What can''t you say in your house without provoking a reaction?

DeeJay-

This thread makes me laugh because there are so many words we can't say in front of our little demon dog, Eddie.
2.gif
Eddie is a miniature pinscher who only weighs 20 lbs., but has a HUGE personality!!! LOL
Here are some of the words you just cant say out loud without him going nuts!

out
walk
cat ( you say this word and he grabs the nearest toy and bites the s*** out of it!)
squirrel
bird
ducky (his fave toy)
park
car

I am sure there are others I am forgetting....

And he knows phrases too- like if I say, "do you want to go for a ride in mommy's car??" he gets all excited and runs to the door to get to my car- he loves to be in the car so he can stick his head out the window!!!

LOL!!!

Oh, I forgot... Any phrase that starts with "Do you want... ?" Also gets an immediate perky eared reaction!!!

As in, "Do you want A TREAT?" "Do you want to go for A WALK?"

Not only *words* but whole phrases are outlawed now!

I can only imagine in a few years the happy hubby and I will be talking in cryptic code just to keep peace and calmness in the household!

LOL- Yeah, we sometimes spell words out so he doesnt pick up on it, but he definitley knows how to spell W-A-L-K...even if you attempt to spell it out he understands that one! Its amazing how smart they are!!!

This isn''t quite the same thing... but our dogs definitely know some bizarre sounds. They both go nutso when anyone cracks an egg because I''ll sometimes give them a yolk when I''m making scrambled eggs for breakfast. And one of our dogs gets really excited when she hears DH''s CD drive door open/close on the computer... because she knows that CDs make a reflection on the wall and she loves little flashes of light!
1.gif
Hopefully she''ll never take notice of my diamonds!
32.gif

That''s so funny about sounds! The fridge means nothing to The Demon but the FREEZER means ICE CUBES!!! He''ll come running from anywhere in our 4 story townhouse if he hears the freezer open!

lol ours totally does the head cock thing when we say ''do you want to''...or even ''do you''...it''s hilarious. sometimes i don''t even have to finish the sentence before she goes nuts.

words for that portia knows...and typically goes nuts over:
squirrel
walk
chicken
hungry
treat
car
piggy (one of her fave toys)
cat
bird
''the ball''

of course ''no''...hehee.

she also knows her training words like...
sit
lay down
roll over
dead
paw
show me
sit pretty
leave it
get it

but most of her training words can be subbed with hand movements, she''s as receptive to those...

The Demon only knows his training words when he want to... He's pretty good with "sit" and "come" but "don't jump into the river" is still a bit iffy...

Can't say

cheese or C-H-E-E-S-E spelled out
walk or W-A-L-K spelled out
truck
ride
outside
rabbit (they chase one in our neighborhood)
bunny
bad
no
go find
go get
roll over
sit
go to bed
treat
cat
Daddy

without getting a reaction out of our 2 dogs

Walk, hungry, kitty-cat, squirrely-whirly, bunny rabbit, kibble, snack, thirsty, bath-tub, beauty parlour, car, ball,.......and anything that starts with 'wanna' gets a response!!! He also know all of our names especially mommy, daddy and brother.

Not only do I have to watch what I say, but my poodle, Brownie, reads my body language too!!! I am such a creature of habit so when he sees me wearing certain clothes, getting a drink of water and putting my lip balm on he totally knows I am taking him for a walk without me saying a word. He starts to bark at me and gives me several nose butts in the legs until I get him out the door!!!lolol

He barks at me when he is hungry (and will throw his bowl around the kitchen), wants to go for a walk or has to relieve himself.
emdog.gif
He is quite the smart fellow!!

ETA: I've forgotten bad (we say bayad), sit, lay down, bus......

Both my dogs know
Treat
Piece of cheese
Store
Mail
Car
Kimmie ( that''s their groomer )
Vet
Khackie ( our bird )
I''ll be back in a couple days ( when they see my suitcase )
Breakfast
I''m not ready yet ( Meaning I''m not ready to leave and take them with me quite yet )
Chew toy
Speak- That''s for Casper. Ask him to speak and he will. Cracks me up

They go nuts just hearing, Do you want..... Could be me meaning do you want to come in the car, do you want your breakfast, I''m going to get the mail, Do you want a treat, or a piece of cheese. And since Casper goes nuts during thunderstorms I will say do you want me to call Ashley. She talks to him over the phone and when he hears her voice he calms down immediatley and has a huge smile on his face.

hmmm ok, Zoe knows:

out
walk
park
ride
nina's house (my mom's)
swim
treat
ball
speak

training words

go to your bed
lay down
sit
shake
come
drop
no
go potty
stay

my parents'' dogs seem to only know one word... COOKIE!
That''s what my mom calls dog treats. Oh, they are so spoiled.

okay, our Aussies are a little WHACKY!

some of the forbidden words around our house are
-ICE (yes, crazy, but they like to chase ice cubes around the linoleum kitchen floor... they come running when you ''crack'' the ice tray)

-RUCK SACK (for whatever reason, my FF''s Army-issue ruck sack is our dear sweet Bailey''s FAVORITE chew toy... imagine having to explain to a supply sargeant like 4 times that he needs a new one issued... the thing is now put on the top shelf of the closet when he''s not using it... I''ve seen her pull the thing down from about 5 feet high!!)

-GRANDMA''s: the doggies LOVE going to my FF''s mom''s house (so their grandma''s house...) it''s an instant run to the garage to go for a trip!

-PEANUT BUTTER: if they need pills, they sometimes get it in a teaspoon full of this stuff - they go NUTS over it!

-POST: like Army post - the 2 of them absolutely go ESTATIC if we go visit friends or the FF at work... they get TONS-O-ATTENTION!

-TURNER''s POND or WALDEN POND: they LOVE sWIMMING... it''s insane

-WOODS, FIELD, HIKE, etc...

-BIKE: they always come with me mountain bikiing - and it''s their favorite time in the world - nothing better than running in the woods!

oh yeah i forgot my parent''s names and my sister''s names too...she knows those. and also yes, she knows ''go potty''...i make her go to the bathroom before she gets to play with her dog friends in the park which was kind of a fluke training. hehe. she knows ''Daddy'' too.

also she knows sounds like Greg''s car and his truck when he comes home, she knows when the garage door opens, she knows when I am in the pantry and runs down the stairs hoping she''s getting something, oh yes she also know ''sausage'' because she gets one every sunday morning.
lol heather, so true re knowing about going for a walk, if she sees me getting my ipod and her collar she gets totally excited and barks and yips and then grabs the leash and carries it out herself, it''s sooo cute. gotta love em!

That''s for sure!!!

The funny thing is that I always put on my lip balm and take a drink of water before I go ANYwhere, but I have to be doing that AND wearing certain clothes before he reacts! He has been studying me for over five years now, and is amazing at reading my body language.

I think it''s hilarious - dogs can recognize SHOES for crying out loud!

sometimes i''ll head out to go mt. biking and not get fully changed except for my biking sneakers -- and they STILL know what''s going on!

Aussiegirl : p

The Demon is much better at reading my hubby, since he''s the one that takes him out 99% of the time. But the if he *suspects* that I''m going to do it, when I reach for the treat bag, all hell breaks loose!

oh yeah the shoes..that is so true. Zoe gets all exciting whenever she sees me put on running shoes b/c she knows it''s walk time b/c that''s the only time I wear gym shoes
5.gif

it really is amazing when you think about how much they really do understand and comprehend

So this is the thread that brings me out of lurkerdom...
Hi Dee Jay! Great idea! (I have the two Carolina-esque dogs if you remember...)
Hi Dani! Nice to see you - hope you are doing well!
JCrow, pretty funny that your dog knows cosmo!

Mine know the basic training words, sit, down, stay, come - and they obey very well in the house but their ears shut off out doors.

Walk or W-A-L-K or even getting shoes etc gets a huge chaotic reaction.
They also know,
go business
treat
good dog / bad dog
bedtime
Crate time (am SO proud that they know that one and run right in)
and the biggie... FOOD!
They are also great at reading body language and signs of getting ready, etc!

Ha ha, the responses in this thread are hilarious! I have been laughing through each one of them.

Milo''s "triggers," or words we can provoke him with or withhold:

walk
ride
leash
car
Where''s ___ (insert doggie friend''s name)?
treat
hungry
dinner
Big Bed (As in, "let''s go get in the big bed!")
Daddy''s home (I sometimes use this to get him to come inside)
farm
swimming/swim (he HATES water)
31.gif

Bone
Ball
High Five!
kitty
collar (it has metal tags attached, which jingle together...he HATES when we take it off--it''s like we''re stealing his "jewelry" so I guess he''s just like Mommy!)
9.gif

grandma or grandpa
home
potty
leave it
go outside

He has learned gestures, including pointing up or down when on the main floor of the house, to mean "upstairs," or "downstairs," and he responds to my "high five" gesture, a fist pulled down in front of his face to mean "down," and a fist pulled back toward his rear to mean "roll over." Other than that, he''s not too well-trained, lol!

Oh man, my beagle (who had to find a new mommy after 7 years with me...she tried to bite our new baby twice--so jealous!) knew a whole mess of words! She knew all her toys by name, food...she had dozens of words she was so smart. (and food motivated)

My shepherd (who still lives with us, because she LOVES the baby, thinks its hers) knows Walk (spelled as well), outside, come, sit, down, stay, leave it, no, chewie, bone, baby, "go for a ride", but not nearly as smart as my beagle was!
Dogs are so funny. My german shepherd is kinda petite for the breed (about 65lbs, but tall) and she thinks she''s a lap dog. She will put her huge furry butt in your lap if you let her & then look at you like "what?".

Jeannine

I''m a new mommy of a Cocker Spaniel puppy! We just started learning "come" tonight, but so far he''s starting to learn "no bite", and "leave it" as well. I hope he''ll learn more really fast

Miss Maya, a chessie, is so smart, as all of these dogs are. She knows the training words and non verbals, down, sit, come, stay, heel...and off, which is what we say to her when she jumps up. She knows when she is going to be fed by the opening sound of the air tight vault we keep her kibble in in our pantry. She knows if you say WALK she runs to the back door, and she knows KENNEL which is where she sleeps at night and goes in nicely. She hears my hubby when he comes home (garage door) and knows my kid''s names if I say them. She kisses you if you tell her to kiss you. She knows if you tell her to get her toys from her bucket and she knows certain toys to go get. She knows at night when we go for our last wee wee to go out to one spot and make and come right back. She also knows what night night means, and can shake on command. She loves when we wash her bowls out at night, since they are stainless and reflect on the ceiling and she loves the lights and tries to get them. She also loves loves loves the water and if we say hose or water to her she freaks and if we open the back door she runs right to the hose when we tell her PLAY. They are tooo smart.

Our dog has learned how to spell his hot-button words, like W-A-L-K and H-U-N-G-R-Y, so he perks up whenever we spell those out (I don''t even know why we still bother!). Like others of you he also perks up and cocks his head to the side whenever we start any phrase with, "Do you wanna...." because it usually ends with "cookie," "go for a walk," etc.

Other words/phrases he knows:
Daddy
Daddy''s home
Who''s there? (elicits frenzied barking and hopping around at the front door)
Are ya hungry?
Do ya wanna go for a walk?
Cookie
Thirsty
Water
Sit
Down
Roll over
Stay
Drop it
Get over here
Git!
Kiss
Shake
High-five
Speak
Chill

His nicknames...he responds to all of them:
Doobage
Doobs
Mofo
Mofe (because you need a shortened version of Mofo, ya know)
Ug (short for Ugly, meant in the nicest way of course)
