What words does your dog know?

Funny thread!

We have two dogs. One smart (Izzie), one cute (Cricket)!

Anyway, we can''t say:

Hey, Izz . . . (which is usually followed with a question, it will wake him out of a dead sleep)
Do you want to . . .
Park or Dog Park or DP
Walk
Outside
Festine (french for dog cookie...long story)
doggie day care
smoke (Cricket, the cute one, likes to go outside when my FI has a cigarette on the porch - and she knows the word smoke means she gets to sit on the porch)
treat
rawhide
cheese

I think that is most of them...

Some of these words are so funny--obviously many of your dogs are a tad smarter than The Demon, LOL!

He picks up on his nicknames, but they change frequently. Right now we're referring to him as the little Pooper Scooper (which is ridiculous--we obviously are the *pooper scoopers* in this relationship!!!) but I think he knows the tone of our voice when we're talking to/about him more than anything.

As for commands, he knows:
sit
down
come
stay
shake (although he uses whichever paw is closest to the hand you're using)
high five
and play dead (which is really us suckering ourselves into "now we get to give you a treat AND rub your belly" because playing dead just consists of getting into the belly rubbin' position)

My in-laws sent us a "trick kit" that has all sorts of complicated instructions and goofy play things in it. I think they really expect him to be able to do all 38 tricks when they come to visit next. Ha! I'd settle for the "stay out of the damn river" trick!!!

ETA: Gail, welcome back!

Mine know the usual - and some odd ones

GOrilla - Carly''s fav. toy
all the cats names
Dr. Sue or Dr. Atkins - the vet
Sue - the groomer
Porch
Ride in the car - sets them over the edge
ready ready jump - jump on whatever I''m pointing to (and other agility commands)
Gentle Baby
Do your business - (poop or pee)

....and lots of other words/phrases

I''ve read that your dog is capable of knowing/understanding/relating over 250 words. I believe that.

Wow, I feel like such a bad puppy mommy with the training. Dylan''s great at picking up on tone and hand motions, but not so great at picking up on words. We''re still working on verbal commands.

What he does know:
Where are you, Dylan? (He''ll come running from whereever he''s hiding.)
TchTch (come/follow me)
Ehhhh (Stop whatever you''re doing)
No
Go potty
Fetch
Dylan
Up stairs
Down stairs
Daddy
Squeaky (his fav toy)
Go in (to the crate)
The sound of buzzing someone into the apartment building

Plus the handmotions for:
Sit
Down
Drop it
Shake (still shaky)

He also recognizes things like us standing up after a meal and opening the dining room closet -- that means that he''s getting fed.

I could ask my dog, "Do you want to read an encyclopedia?" and he''d give me the one ear up side head cock b/c I asked "Do you"

Do you wanna bath? Gets the same excited interest followed by an immediate sulk upon hearing the word bath. It''s like a light switch.

The doorbell ringing on a Pizza Hut commercial or any tv sitcom sends him running for the door. We''ll reply with "It''s just the tv" and then he''ll come lay back down.

My bf usually gets home between 8 and 9:30pm and he always calls to say he''s on his way home (3 minutes away). So if my cell rings during this time frame, the dog gets all excited and runs and waits by the door. This is especially true if it''s a quick phone call. My phone will ring and he''ll sit in front of me and watch me. As soon as the phone call is over he bolts for the window. I feel bad when he''s just calling to say, I''m almost done here but it will probably be another half hour. Even saying "No, not yet" doesn''t work. Poor little guy.

"Quick pee pee" means don''t lollygag outside (he goes off leash no fence.) Do your thing because either Mommy''s running late or we''re just doing this because it''s bedtime. If I don''t say that, he could sniff grass and meander for 20 minutes.

"Other side" means we''re walking on leash and he''s trying to pull on the other side of a tree or sign post. Other side means back up and go on the left side of it (whichever.) Works almost every time.

Yeah...but which words can your cat recognise?

All of them of course....... and will probably give you a reply, if they''re in the mood!

>^..^

Cute thread! I don''t have a dog right now but I grew up with a fabulous collie. He was super smart and knew lots of words. The funny thing is that we also spoke to him in Armenian so he knew 2 languages! One day, he had gone over to our neighbor''s yard because their girl dog was in heat. Our neighbor was yelling at him to get away so my dad went over to get him. My father apologized to the neighbor, etc. and she said, "Your dog doesn''t even speak english!" That story still makes us laugh!!

My parents' dog knows (but does not necc. obey):
sit
stay
no
paw
other paw
move (haha, he's huge and gets in the way)
tubby (runs the other way or wont let you pull him)
outside
in the house
bunny
kitty
doggie
no bites, give kisses (if he plays rough)
where's the ball?
where's your rope? (he'll go looking)
hamster (haha)
want...(anything, he perks up at want)
go for a ride
go for a walk
car
treat/cookie/cheese
trade (yes, my dad TRADES with the dog--he gives him cheese so he'll give up the sock or whatever he's holding ransom)

Monster dog knows:

Not your yard
front porch
out back
Googie (cookie)
yummy
Snausages
din-din
brekkie
Chew-chew
Where''s the cat - Where''s Oscar/Lilly.
Where''s Gorrilla (toy)
Airport
Bath
Doggy camp
Walk
Hike
Bed time
Night-Night
I love you
Give Mommy a kiss

We''re going to Grammies/Grandad''s house (my parents)
You''re going to see Sammy (parent''s dog)
I''m going out, you wait here and Grandad will come get you. (he heaves a sigh and lies down staring at the door)
Mommy''s going on a trip. (frequently used with: you''re going to stay at Grammie''s and Grandads house with Sammy. (otherwise he just stares at the door the whole time))
We''re going to M___''s house.
We''re going to the bank (he loves the vaccum tubes at the drive through bank, the fact that cookies come out of them doesn''t hurt)
Do you want to go shopping? (he loves being a good dog in shops, go figure)
Guard the house

Names he knows:
Mommy
M____ (who''s turning into Daddy)
Grammie
Granddad
Sammy
Auntie Nancy
Oscar (my cat)
Lilly (M''s cat he loves)
Rosie (M''s cat he''s scared of)
Margaret
Carolyn

Command words:
Sit (his favorite since he usually gets either pets or treats)
Stay
Down
Come (sort of)
heel
Ok
leave it (very very useful)
Give
Cut it (I don''t want him to think barking is always bad, just that he needs to stop now. which usually results in him lying down and softly growling)
No

Non-verbal cues:
sit
down
stay
and he''ll happily sit perfectly still the second he sees the flea and tick medicine come out of the cabninet. He''s firmly convinced that it''s an easy way to get a snausage.

Indie - I''m particularly intrigued that your dog knows "airport"! You have to share the info behind that one just to satisfy my curiosity!!!

Oh that's easy, I often take him to the airport with me to when I pick up my fi who travels alot. We often park in short term and walk in to meet fi at the security point. Monster dog refuses to go on the evil escalator but thinks elevators are really cool. You go in a little room, the doors shut, it shakes a little, and poof! the outside is all different!!
He gets so happy about seeing his daddy again that we never have any problems with security people or other travelers. Sometimes having a dog that looks like a giant steiff stuffed toy comes in handy.

Opps, I forgot monster dog also knows the phrase 'upsy daisy' for when I want him to jump into a car. ok, so I'm horribly guilty of using baby talk on an 80+lb dog.

IndieJones-

My Brady''s nickname is also Monster dog, or just Monster for short.

Oh my sweet Fluffy Boomer (seen has his alter ego Boomjamin Franklin in my avatar) is the smartest! He is an Australian Shepherd (hence his full name Boomerang).

He knows the following unmentionable words:
Walk
W-A-L-K
Leash
L-E-A-S-H
Cookie
Breakfast
Go
Car
Squirrel
Cat
Printing Started (our computer announces when the printing starts and completes and Boomer seeks this que to attack the printer and the paper coming out of it)
Printing Complete
Chewy
Pig Ear
Treat

In addition to the no-no words, he knows the following commands:
Sit
Down
Way down (from office space, lays his nose on the floor)
Speak (at first he will softly speak)
Louder (then he speaks louder)
High Five
Other Paw (high fives with the other Paw)
House
Bed
Easy (when going up and down the stairs)
Get it Boomer Get it (barks like a crazy animal thinking he is fierce and scary and frightening away whatever we are telling him to get)
Get the Door
Loose (drops what is in his mouth)
Osama bin Laden (same effect as Get it Boomer Get it)
Kiss
Snowcone (licks your hand)
Bath
Shake
Back up
Spin
He sits at cross walks until we say "Let''s go" and then he starts walking across the street

We also have signs for speak, sit and down.

He has the following nicknames:
Boomer (what we call him most times)
Boom Dogga
Boo Boo
Boom Diggity
Fluffy Man
Master of Fluffiness
Muffin (only I call him that)
Snuggle Bug (again- only I call him that)
Boo Boo Cachoo

Oh these are sooo funny! I thought my dog (Rook the Rhodesian Ridgeback) was the only one who could spell!! His favorite things to hear are jog (spelled, also), hungry, and hard boiled eggs cracking because my 3 year old doesn''t eat the yolks and he gets them. He''s also good at hearing my footsteps going upstairs as his reminder to get off of my new bed where he''s not allowed and gets squirted with water (his least favorite thing) if he''s there.

I love this thread! I have two dogs and I think the cocker has learned even more since we got the boxer.

Words/Phrases they know:
cookie
bone
supper
rawhide
treat
go potty
bedtime potty (this to indicate "last chance to go" and "yes, mommy is finally going to bed")
its still bedtime (when they want to get up at an unreasonable hour)
lie down
snuggle down
settle
off
sit
stay
beg (cocker only)
four paws (for the boxer, meaning "keep all four paws on the floor, please")

my boxer knows "get your ______" fill in with rawhide, tug, squeaky, etc. Also, she knows that FI refers to all stuffed toys as "evil ______" fill in with squirell, bunny, frog, etc. And when she is being very bad/annoying, we have to use "Do you want to go in your kennel?" which is a threat of time out. Usually works like a charm. In the past two years, I have realized that having a boxer is like having a toddler.

Sounds they know:
knife on the cutting board, especially if I am cutting tomatoes with a serrated knife
whip cream can being shaken and dispensed
treat jars being opened
Either of our cars pulling up/car doors being slammed
UPS truck (he''s my boxer''s buddy)

Nicknames they know:
Cocker: Tinker Toy, Tinker, Tink, Stinky nut, Little nut, Nut
Boxer: Autumn, Aut, Autsie, Big dog

There are some smart, smart dogs belonging to pricescopers!
Mine aren''t as good with the names - maybe they''ll learn.
I love it when they stare at us intently even though they have no clue what we''re saying.

Dani, did you decide whether to reset your diamond? I saw the ritani endless love in person the other day (I think you were considering that one) and it is gorgeous. (Love what you have now, also!)

Hey!

I love what I have now too, but I think I really want a flush-fit e-ring and w-band...I spoke to my jeweler, he said that he can possibly raise the basket on my current e-ring , which I really do love so that is an option. Or, the other option is to reset my diamond into a completely different setting (like the Ritani or something else). You said you liked the Ritani...how do you think an ec would look with that pave band? I havent seen one in person yet....

Oh well, I figured we have time- we are getting married next Sept 28 (''07). If the gap is not too large, who knows, I may just leave it non-flush, have to see where the funds are, ya know???

Weddings are so darn expensive!

Sorry to hijack a little DeeJay!!!!

Dani - Let me continue your hi-jack--where is your thread? I would love to see your pics!

As for The Demon, we got some photos last night from our in-laws who visited earlier this month. My FIL caught The Demon in mid-air in a couple of "high five" shots. How funny! I never realized he actually left the gound when he did that (I thought he just stood up on his back legs) but there he is in every shot looking like Superman ready to get a tall treat in a single bound!

I hope it''s OK to continue the hijack. Ya know, I was impressed with how high quality the ritani seemed, like every diamond perfectly aligned and the ring was very well proportioned. It seemed well designed, especially the way the head flowed with the band. The one I saw had a round with halo so I''m not sure how it would go with an EC (do they make a halo for EC? or would you go sans halo?) That is saying something because usually I am not into halos and I was drooling over this ring. I hope you will get to visit one in person - that''s probably the best way to tell. I love what you have now (I am a solitaire person!). I might consider trying the band with the gap first and seeing if it bugs you or not before making any big changes :)

The favorite, offered by dh "Wanna go for a ride?"

Hey!

Yes, I am going to do exactly just that- try on a few thin bands with my e-ring now and see if the gap bothers me....after all, not everyone wears their rings flush-fit...that has become a more relatively recent trend. Years ago, many wore their e-ring and w-band non flush...
The truth is I LOVE my current setting, and I am afraid a pave band will take away from my EC stone which I adore...so I dont know, we''ll see when the time comes!
Hope you are doing well Gail!!!
