Ok ladies, I think I''m in a really tough spot and need your help. My boyfriend bought my engagement ring about 7 months ago. I picked it out when we went shopping together, so I just want to make that clear. It''s a great ring, it''s a .48 ct. marquise in a .25 ct. shared prong setting in white gold. I''ve been doing a lot of looking in the past months on PS and other sites. I have a princess cut solitaire right now and love it. This is where the problem comes in. The more I look, I think i have realized a marquise is not my favorite shape. I''m afraid i made a rash decision because i was so excited. I would ideally like a H & A .70 ct. set in a white gold solitaire. I checked and it''s in our price range now. But, we bought from our favorite B&M, my ring is still in the safe there waiting for a proposal. I''m not sure if we can trade it in or return it now. I love my boyfriend, and felt like i needed to be honest with him. So, i told i was having mixed feelings about the ring. I also made sure to point out he shouldn''t feel bad because i picked it out. I think we just don''t know what do. Am i being a brat by second guessing my great ring i have picked out? OR should i go for my dream ring, and possibly run into return issues with the jeweler? Help PLEASE!

Hi happyfeat! You are going to have to look at that ring on your finger every day for the rest of your life (or until you get PS-itis and upgrade!

. So, I really think you should explain to your man that you are having second thoughts and go have a chat to to jeweller and see what can be done for an exchange. This is a once-in-a-lifetime purchase and incredibly significant so you need to be happy - a girl NEEDS to have her dream ring, just like she needs water, air, etc! Good luck!!!

Well, I don''t know if this is the best solution, but what I would do is call the jeweler and inquire about his return policy. You can probably do so anonymously, as a "hypothetical question" that matches your situation. That way, you''ll be able to make an informed decision based upon whether or not it''s actually possible to switch to a new/different ring.

No sense in bringing it up if it''s not even a possibility.

Are you thinking of switching to a new ring with the same jeweler, or just returning the old one and buying the new one elsewhere?

Ideally, I would like to buy from James Allen, but i don''t think that after 7 months the jeweler will just give us a refund. I will call tomorrow and see about the return policy... good idea musey!

wait, I''m confused - you already have a solitaire?

yeah, but it''s a promise ring type thing, and it''s small and terrible quality.... i''m talking about my engagement ring that i don''t love

I think you already know what to do, darling. Your BF must understand that the ring is something you need to cherish and treasure for the rest of your life, theoretically. It can''t be something you don''t like. You''ll be tortured over it. Similar thing happened with my wedding band. I ordered a band with a notch in it that would fit flush against my EC halo ring. But I hated that notch so much that I decided to return it and get the straight one. It caused some headache, but it was worth it. I can''t be hating my ring forever.

Ok... so i talked to my boyfriend tonight, and it went REALLY well. He is all for trying to at least get a credit for my ring. He''s making alot more money now, so he said a .7-.8 round is definitely in the picture if the B&M doesn''t try to hike up the price! He''s calling the jeweler tomorrow, so let''s all hope for the best. I don''t see why they should have a problem with it, considering it''s never left their store. I hope they don''t decide to be difficult, they''ve been wonderful up to this point. I know they won''t just give me a refund after like 7 months, but i don''t really think our request is that unreasonable. Do you guys?

I''d probably try to return it first, then I would try seeing if they would let you apply it towards a setting for the H& A. then I would try exchanging it for something else.
