What's the right baguette to center stone size ratio?

Hi everyone!

I'm new to PriceScope, but it's been an absolute wealth of information so far. My boyfriend and I are looking to create a custom ring. Right now I'm pretty attached to the idea of a 1.5 ct round center stone with 2 tapered baguettes at the sides to give it that added light, as in this Tiffany ring:

http://www.tiffany.com/Engagement/Item.aspx?GroupSKU=GRP10025

Tiffany is way over our budget, so I've been looking at recreating this ring through Blue Nile (who I'm feeling kind of put off after reading about some people's negative experiences) and James Allen (who have been absolutely lovely over the phone but seem a little pricier).

I was wondering if anyone has any insights about how large the baguettes should be for a 1.5 ct center stone? Tiffany's site doesn't say how big the baguettes are, and neither does Harry Winston, DeBeers, etc.

Any thoughts/ pictures would be hugely appreciated. Also any anecdotes about buying through James Allen or anyone else you think I should be looking at. Thanks!!!

I would contact engagement rings direct. They make a tiffany stke like that and will size the baguettes based off your center stone

Thanks nielseel, I'll check them out!

whats your budget for the entire ring?

Also Oakgem.com and other high end jewelry estate sellers often have baguette semi mounts for sale.

We were hoping to stick as close to a 15k budget as possible. There's wiggle room to about 17k though for the perfect ring!

Thanks for the idea Rosebloom, I hadn't thought of that at all. So if you found a mount on one of these sites I guess the next step would be to contact a jeweler to put it all together? Is it easy to find someone to do that?

I have a Vatche 3-stone RB center w/ baguette sides. The size of the baguettes is based on the size of the center; for me I just told them the dimensions of the center and they ordered the right sized setting, and it looks great!

Yes I think it would be pretty easy to have it set by a jeweler but with your budget I would not go this route. It won't be perfectly sized for your stone. If you had less to work with for the whole ring then it might open up some options but you have plenty of resources to do it right!

Usually you work with a great jeweler who will help you with something like this. Its not standard- all depends on your stone dimensions, what kind of "look" you're looking for (e.g delicate vs. blingy), band width, etc. If you work with ERD, Mark will guide you in the right direction and give his suggestions. He has an awesome eye.
Good luck!

As with many things, it really can be a personal preference thing. For instance, my engagement ring (which my BF has hidden while he waits to surprise me with a proposal!!!!!!) is a RB with a straight baguette on either side. I personally really liked the look of a straight baguette coming off the center diamond to really make it pop! Also, I found I preferred a long narrow baguette instead of a chubby short one on either side. To make it even more confusing, what I liked in photos I didn't actually like on my hand!

Could you find somewhere to try on a variety of examples? If you are thinking of going custom then you could ask your jeweler to source a range of baguettes for you to play with alongside your center stone of choice perhaps? That's what I ended up doing and I couldn't be more thrilled with how it turned out  In the end I got a 0.615ct RB center with 0.10ct each baguette side. Seeing as your ring will be well over a carat bigger I'm guessing the proportions will be even more evident so it pays to get it exactly how you want it, not how the ring companies think the proportions should be.

Thank you all for your advice. I am officially in love with the ERD setting and will be making an appointment with them to discuss asap :) The ERD setting is called the Amanda, which is my name, so I'm thinking it's fate!

We've found the Blue Nile and James Allen loose diamonds are a little cheaper, so we're considering buying the diamond separately from one of those but having it set by ERD for sure.

It feels a little risky buying a diamond from Blue Nile, when they don't even provide you with pictures of the actual diamond itself. But I figure we'd have the 30 day return window to go have it appraised and make sure it's alright. Has anyone gone this route? Any thoughts?

If you find one at james allen for around the same price (remember you get a wire discount and a pricescope discount of I think around 5.5 %) I personally would pay a little more to have an idealscope, have someone make sure its eye clean, and not have to deal with returns, but that's just me. If you don't mind the idea of getting one, sending to an appraiser, having it possibly not be a keeper, sending it back, and starting all over again..then you can go thay route

Gah I can't wait to see it finished! !

Amanda, Im thinking that Mark at ERD could give you just as much of a deal as you think you're getting at Blue Nile...Plus you'll get more benefits, such as having them pick a winner for you and evaluating the stone in person. You may pay a smidge more at ERD, but the service will be better for sure.

I'd consider shipping cost as well. Youll have to pay for insurance and such to have it shipped and set by someone else. I'd either ask them if they can give you a ps deal or help you out if you agree to get both the setting and the stone there. Or ask ja to mail it strait to them
