Where to buy grape garnet or good rubellite

Thanks. The colour is quite magenta - I wonder if that's more the norm with grape garnets? I prefer the slightly cooler colours like the AJS stones but I seem to see the magenta types more often.

I think they are shifty based on lighting. Ajs tend to show the cool side in their listings. But in this article they show the shiftiness of one. They could be more purple than the ones we've seen elsewhere though https://www.ajsgem.com/articles/rare-purple-garnets-mozambique.html

"Under cool light these gems display a rich grape hue. But under incandescent light, which has more wavelengths in the red part of the spectrum, these gems display a blazing cranberry color with magenta flashes. Under balanced lighting, they are an intense purple with red flashes."

This is gorgeous, very purple (a touch lighter would be ideal if such material exists), and reminds me of top amethyst with red and blue flashes.
They have posted quite a bit of purple Mozambique garnet rough and always seem to advertise as being at gem shows. They may not have a great online sales platform if at all.
Maybe best to treat this as eye candy unless you can meet them in person.

Oooh, thanks.

I'm sitting on things at the moment as I'm now distracted because my silly hand is attempting to buy something that it shouldn't buy, and depending on the outcome, this purple garnet thing may be on hold....for a few weeks.

Thanks for the photoshop though, I think it looks lovely. I think definitely a rich coloured stone for this setting would look good!

I got the ring though now and here are some pics - the first is more accurate in terms of colour (quite a dark rhodolite). Notice my fat fingers struggling to fit into it

So I'm back with my search. The stone measurements are 10.2 x 7.9 mm using a caliper, and it's an oval. I don't know how much wiggle room there is. I've reached out to AJS if they might have a stone that fits that's on their website.

Not the cheapest and I think too large. 11.7 x 9mm.

Anyone with experience know how much larger or smaller the stone could be?

You might want to check the depth your ring can hold too

Anyone know if the depth of the new stone can be shallower than the original? Obviously it cannot be much deeper.

Thanks so much, exactly the questions I need answered! Don't know how deep it is, 3 to 5mm?? I don't know how to measure it with a caliper.

I’ve read that you can typically go 0.2mm in either direction and make a stone work in a setting. There are always exceptions, but that has always worked for me.
For the depth, I think you need to take in to consideration the measurement from the girdle to the culet, rather than the overall stone depth. There are ”seats” in the prongs that the girdle sits in, then the pavilion below that sits down into the setting. The crown of the stone above the girdle could be high or low, and that would be fine since it sits above where the stone is mounted at the girdle. If your setting looks plenty deep, you most likely wouldn’t have to worry about it.
It’s a very pretty setting and I quite like how it looks with the stone that’s already set in it!
Another seller that has purple Mozambique garnets is Aurelia Gems which is the retail side of Prima Gems. They have a lot more available than what’s listed on Etsy. If you send a message letting them know what you’re looking for, they’ll let you know if they have something that could work. This one is too small for your setting, but gives you a link to their store:

I thought I should add that the 0.2mm difference has always worked for me with four prongs settings. With your setting having twelve prongs, I think there might be less wiggle room for stone size difference. If it were me, I would keep the center stone that you have and enjoy it as is!

Ok so measured the height of the prongs and it's about 1.7mm.

@demantoidz - yes, I think it's too large, though a lovley stone.

@2Neezers - thanks for the tips. Yes, I did look at that stone in Aurelia gems but the size is not quite right I think. Thanks for your comments about the ring. The setting is pretty, and in a way it look nie already but the stone is a little too dark for me.

I've never set a new stone before so I don't even know who to get it done by, so it's all new to me. Purple garnets are not the most common it seems and finding an exact fit might be difficult, though one vendor did tell me they have some new rough and will let me know if any cut stone is a suitable.

The diamonds on the setting is not the highest quality so not sure how much I would like to spend on the stone, but still, let's see. The colour shift element of some also appeals to me though not all seem to do that (actually the current garnet has some colour shift flashes under certain lights).

Rubellites seem to come in sizes too big for the setting, so if I really can't find anything, might just go for another brighter garnet of some sort.

Quite like these too, from one of the vendors someone here recommended, but I think the stone might be a bit small.

Yes the stone I linked is definitely too small for your setting. I was just sharing it to give you a link to their Etsy page :)). They have more available than what is shown. If you message them with what you’re looking for, they might have something that is not listed that could work for you.

BTW, can anybody give me an idea as to what I should expect to pay to get a new stone set into the ring?

I am having one set into an old setting with four prongs and he’s charging $150 because he needs to retip them to make my stone fit.

He said if he didn’t need to retip them then it would be $50 to swap the stones.

Hi JewelledEscalators
If you are not satisfied with your vendor and looking for new then I would like to recommend it to you once you visit https://www.gemsny.com/hessonite-garnet/basic-search/ where you can find garnet stones in all shapes & sizes at a very affordable price.

Thanks. I can't open the link for some reason. I did find someone who has purple garnets in the UK and he found a stone for me but I've yet to see it since he's away. It also seems that the ring having so many prongs may make setting it a bit of a hassle so not sure what to do at the moment.
