Where to get natural orange topaz and citrine?

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of designing an e-ring, and I would like to include a small (0.01ct - 0.015ct) orange topaz and similarly sized citrine on the inside of the shank as a pair of surprise stones as her birthstones. If I could, I would like both of these stones to be natural rather than being treated. So this brings me to my question. Where can I go to find something like this? Most places seem to have larger topazes and citrines, and I really don't know who to trust to know that these stones are natural.

Thanks

Vendors are highly unlikely to deal with stones this small (melee sized). Furthermore, in this size, you are more likely to get pale or almost colourless versions. A stone this small doesn't have enough material to maintain good colour, even if heated. Forget about trying to get unheated if you can even find something this small. The vendor makes more money selling you a parcel of melees instead of a single melee. Your local jeweller should be able to source you the melee but they are going to be heated.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking this might be the case, but it's always nice to have confirmation :)

Even if treated, I still think it'll be an appreciable little touch.

I can think of someone that deals in small natural stones and they are very helpful and nice and honest etc. This Ebay vendor http://stores.ebay.com/NCEGEMS

I have bought small sapphires and garnets from them.

Found some little topaz right away on the site. There are only 5 left and they are only $8.00. You should grab one!

Thanks for the heads up. I will keep an eye on the vendor, but unfortunately there is no way that I can fit 3mm stones on the inside of the shank. The width of the shank is going to be no larger than 2mm, so the stones going on the inside have to be closer to 1.6mm or so.

Wow that is small. have you tried rio grande?

I guess I'm just concerned what colour the melee will be when that tiny.

Sorry, I probably wasn't being as clear as I could be. I am looking to put these stones on the inside of the shank ... something along the lines of this:

And this is a relatively close rendition of what the setting will look like. Not the final product, but it gives you an idea:

I'm afraid that you won't be able to tell them apart once they are set into the band since they are very small stones. I'm a November baby too. :) How about her birthstone and your birthstone?

It'll be easy to find natural orange topaz. I'm not so sure about a natural citrine. Most citrines are treated amethyst.

Actually that's a thought I've been floating in my head. But then again, both stones will be placed somewhere where they won't really be seen either way. Decisions decisions.

However, if I can find a true imperial topaz, especially from Russia, that would definitely be something she would truly appreciate. Unfortunately, there is no way to really be sure if it's a natural stone and if it's really from where someone says it is :(

The labs can check for origin and treatment but at that size and cost of the stone versus the testing, they'll give you funny looks.

Hmmm, could you have them hidden under the ring, like somewhere in the gallery of the ring instead of the shank?

The way the ring is currently designed, there is no place for the surprise stone to be mounted at the side or gallery.

That, and I specifically want any colored stones hidden from direct view.

Oooh they have little tiny madeiras! Cute :)

OT: some of those would be great for colored halos.
