Which size setting for this stone?

Hi. I have a stone that is an oval (silvery grey spinel) and need to pick a setting size for it. It is 7.2 mm x 6.1 x 3.9 (which Chrono says is shallow). Would this best fit into a 7 x 5 or an 8 x 6 setting? (My benchperson is pretty talented at getting things to fit.)

This is the setting, btw:

Is this open enough to not loose the silver part of it's silvery grey color or should I look for a more open setting?

Thanks, dear knowledgeable friends.

Mmmmm this is really difficult. Personally I think I would opt for the smaller size and then make sure that the prongs were long enough to go around and over the stone. My reason for getting the smaller setting is that with the larger one you may well see the basket on the length measurement which never looks good. I would take the stone to your benchman I think and let him make the call - it's probably safer!

Yes, it's a good open setting.

Thanks very much, LD ! I'll surely also take it to the benchman before I order the setting.

Much appreciated !

Yes , I agree. I've heard people say both. I'd ask the person setting it. I'm trying to have a pair of round rhodolites set as studs right now. They are 5.5 and I went with 6mm settings in this case.

With a talented bench, I'd go with the smaller setting with really long prongs that you can bend "over" and trim. If you go with the larger size, he'll have to set the stone super high or bend the prongs inward somehow and then you'll see the underbasket, which isn't as pretty.

Sorry so later to reply. Thanks all. The smaller size does make sense but I'll take it in to be looked at first, still. Much appreciated. At least now I more understand the thinking/factors that affect choice of stock setting size. You get a great education here at PS, for sure.

You'll come back to let us know what your setter recommends, right?

Yes! Please come back and let us know what the bench person says. I would love to buy something stock for once!

And you know how I feel about silvery grays. I insist on a picture!

Yes, will do. I have to go there within the next week or so (as I'm having a pair of 4-peaks amethyst set into BGD earring martini stud mountings). 90 percent of the time I can buy stock settings and my guy gets it to work nicely. When it is set, I'll surely get you a photo, Freke.
