If you were in the market, which would you rather have?

1. A nice size (4-5ct) unheated, medium blue Sapphire (with some silk in the crown)
or
2. Top quality Emerald

I am looking into both.

How big is the emerald? Origin? :Up_to_something:

Too vague. There are pros and cons with both.

At the end of the day the decision should be:-

1. Would you wear green or blue more?
2. Do you want a ring to wear everybody?
3. What can your budget buy in both?

Seriously I would decide yourself before asking others. People are sick of sapphires on this forum so you may get less votes because of that.

Forgive me if this is rude but are you hoping to buy one with the proceeds of the sale from your Padparadscha? If so, I would sell that first. It may be more challenging than you think. I hope you don't mind me saying that?

Please clarify?

Yes, I know everyone on CS is sick of Sapphire threads!
No, I would not be relying on the proceeds form that!

Let me rephrase my inquiry then. Which would be the more desirable gem? I love both blue and green.

The Emerald would be of top color, good clarity and completely untreated. Size, not sure yet. Origin?

I think for many of us, either could be desirable, so it would come down to the particulars of one stone v another. If it were between angelina joli's oscar night emerald ring and beyonce's new sapphire.......I'd rather angelina's.

"Everybody" should be read as "everyday" - slip of the keyboard.

Emeralds are not as durable as Sapphires and you need to take more care with them. Having said that I am an Emerald wearer BUT feel that people need to be educated before buying and wearing one otherwise they'll end up with a chipped, cracked lump.

Neither gem is more desirable. They are both beautiful. It would be hard to choose between a top quality Sapphire and a top quality Emerald. It basically comes down to taste. I would have one of each!

However, if I were you, I would see what your budget will buy because a top quality 4-5ct sapphire and an untreated Emerald of 4-5ct will be very very very very expensive.

I don't think it's possible to say which gem is more desirable, without looking at two specific gems (and maybe not even then, since it comes down to personal preference). I would prefer a sapphire just because I would. Unless the emerald took my breath away. Then the emerald. But if I wanted to wear this ring everyday, I would go for a sapphire. Unless I liked the emerald better. ;))

In the end, I think it comes down to seeing two gems side by side, and choosing the one that speaks to you. Good luck with your choice!

Thanks for your response LD, I appreciate it very much. I feel the sapphire will most likely be more in my price range and yes, it will be the more durable. Neither would be something I would wear daily.

I am sure the sapphire I am looking at won't be the absolute (top quality) but I trust the vendor to carry a decent quality. My budget is definitely not open and endless. I don't have Angelina's

Sapphires:
Pros: durability, can sparkle or glow (if silky).
Cons: can undergo any treatment under the sun, very dense (so a dense sapphire will face up half the size of an emerald the same carat weight)

Emeralds
Pros: velvety glow in Colombian material (especially Muzo), not dense and faces up large
Cons: 99% are filled, and the amount of filler is important to know, can easily chip due to their multiple fractures, always included. They don't really sparkle and have a low RI, so if you don't like that, it's important to know

You should really see both top colored stones in person before you decide. A gem show would really help.

By origin I mean is it from the Muzo mine in Colombia or is it from Zambia? Big difference in price and in look.

I'm really not sure which I would go for if I could choose. Plus my mind is currently occupied by lusting after the 2.25ct unheated top colour, VVS, ruby that a friend of mine brought back from his latest buying trip. I had lunch with it on Wednesday (he was somewhere in the background I think) and I am in love...

Vendor has not disclosed this as yet, but I will investigate further.

Oooooooooooooooooo! Photos?????

LD, have asked him to take some for me - if he doesn't sell it first. If I get them I will post it up. It's as good as they get - but £££ - and needs to go to Gubelin or SSEF for a full work-up.

*sigh* sounds wonderful. I can't wait to see/hear about it.

Hi,

I would choose emerald. Our resident experts have given you the things to think about to make a choice. Just last night I decided, again, I want no more stones. If the lottery come in, I would choose the emerald, because personally, I think its the more beautiful and elegant stone. It shouts wealth to me. A sapphire just doesn't do that. So status , for me, would be to have a first class emerald. I am not crazy about the darkish tone in a first class emerald, i much prefer the kelly green, but probably would go for the top color.

I have an emerald necklace with 5 zambian emeralds, almost nine carats. I know its not top color, far from it, but each time I look at it, I tell myself how lucky I am to have it It has 4 carats of diamonds surrounding it. I have never worn it. Of the big four, Sapphire would b3 my last pick. But loved the Pala ones.

This requires some thpught on your part and I woud continue to seek help. Take your time.
Good luck and report back.

Annette

Same here! I'd pick Emerald (like Angelina Jolie's)

Not quite enamored with her emerald earrings though. They're huge, but quite included, and a world class emerald should not be that included. I do like Angelina's emerald ring though. However, for me, the best emerald ring I've seen in a long time is Victoria Beckham's. Like Beyonce's amazing sapphire, you can see the color a mile away. This ring, although the photo is small and fuzzy, epitomizes everything to me about what the best in a Muzo emerald should be.

Angelina's earrings. Don't get me wrong, I'd take them, but the inclusions are very easily seen, and in a super fine emerald, you should not see the inclusions at that distance. All emeralds are included, but the inclusions should not be readily distracting and the stone should look more transparent. I do realize they are enormous though, and it's more difficult to find huge clean material, so something's got to give. They are a lovely color though. I like her ring better, and it appears to be of finer quality than the stones in her earrings.

Of course there's been a lot of photos lately, but Elizabeth Taylor's suite of emeralds, in particular in the broach and her ring, are the finest of the fine to me. The clarity and color are without parallel, and Christopher Smith did a write up about what world class pieces they are to accompany the lab report when they went up for auction this past year.

After seeing a perfect (to me) emerald IRL, I've now discovered that that would be my holy grail. It's still available. It's not huge, but the color is to die for. If you ever come to LA - I would love to take you to this store so you can see it in person. My eyes just about fell out of my head.
