I've done a lot of research on this recently! After scouring many websites and FAQs, and asking a few jewelers in person, the conclusion I found was that the only potentially harmful element to gold is chlorine. And even then, only after many years of exposure. So unless there is bleach in your cleaner (and there shouldn't be!) you should be fine. There has been some conversation on Pricescope in the past (if you search for it) about ammonia being harmful to gold, but with the exception of a couple voices here, it seems that the vast majority of online people/jewelers have used or recommend using ammonia with gold without any problems. The only info I had trouble finding was the effect of ammonia on rhodium-plating, but I did find a few sites saying that rhodium is extremely resistant to most harsh chemicals. And I plan on having my ring re-rhodium-plated every 6 months or so anyway.
Suffice it to say, I feel reassured enough to use my ultrasonic cleaner with an ammonia/water/dish soap mixture daily (or more!) for almost 2 months now on my white gold ring. If you were truly concerned, maybe just choose an ammonia-free jewelry cleaner... but otherwise, you should be fine!
ETA: OR I could have just said "ditto" to Mrs. Salvo's answer!
I just got a SI ultrasonic 2 weeks ago, and have been using the PS recomended hot water/dish soap/windex recipe for my platinum pieces. (Love the extra sparklies!) I haven''t tried to clean any yellow or white gold pieces yet because I was nervous about the ammonia. Does anyone here have a special gold recipe for the US, or are you all comfortable using ammonia on your gold? Is Mr. Clean a good alternative?
I''ve been using wg in my SI ultrasonic for almost 2 years now. No worries. I do take it easy on the Windex when I do so though. Don''t know if that helps or not, but my wg looks perfect!!
