Hi all -- long time, no post! My fiancee and I have moved on to looking at wedding bands. I would like an eternity-style band to go with my round solitaire in platunum. We are finding white gold eternity bands are about half the price of platinum! My question: does anyone have a white gold band next to a platinum e-ring? I guess I am wondering if it looks significantly different or ages differently.

Thanks!
Amy

Amy, I don't think the appearance is what makes things so different, but it's the softness of the metals AGAINST eachother that causes people to stick with the same metal.

As you know, white gold is softer and scratches faster than platinum. I have never seen the effect of it, but ther would be wear and tear on the white gold from constant rubbing the plat.

If you wear the ring on seperate hands, no one would know and mum's the word on metal differences. If you wear them together, I suggest getting a smaller total carat weight in plat. Upgrade later if necessary. Also, have you looked at the eternity bands that look like the Boundless by Ambar bands in the
Pricing for an Eternity Ring (2.6tcw) Thread

The less metal used in the eternity ring, the cheaper it SHOULD be. This could be as little as $50 or so, but try finding a smaller set with less metal (plat is pricey), and see if you can bargain your way down to a nice easy price...? Good luck!

I had my e-ring solitaire mounted into white gold and had a 1/2 eternity band in plat. You could not see the difference...because most of the plat in the band was hidden....it will be reverse for you, but the same theory!

Thanks guys -- we have found that with my e-ring, it looks best with a channel-set eternity band. I should have specified that to begin with

I would not wear gold and platinum next to each other if either ring has enough surface area to show scratching.

My friend has a platinum tension setting (the super modern one from Cartier) and she wears it next to a white gold eternity ring.

I might be getting this wrong, but I could swear her cpmplaint was that the PLATINUM ring was getting scratched.

I thought I's heard that elsewhere here on ps, too.

While platinum is a very tough metal, it can scratch easily.

Now, if your platinum soitaire is thin and unobtrusive, and the metal on the eternity ring is inobtrusive, you might be good to go!

I hated my platinum mounting. It looked like tin after a month. I love my shiny white gold! Doesn't look yellow at all, either!

My stone is 2.03 so not so unobtrusive

But the band is 3 mm.

My grandmother wore a white gold and diamond band with her platinum ring. The two are completely different colors now. Don't you need to get white gold replated every couple years to keep it white and shiny?
She wore the two together for a really long time. The two surfaces that touch eachother are both smooth though, and I can't really tell that the gold has been affected much. If your e-ring doesn't have a smooth, straight side though, it could make a difference.

Personally, if price is a big issue I'd pick a smaller platinum ring for now and then upgrade later. You can always pass on the first one to someone in the family. The first wedding band is more of an heirloom than one you add later so I'd want it to be platinum.
