White gold with platinum- do or don't?

Hi all,
I hope that you lovely ladies(and guys!) on Pricescope could give me some advice on this.
My engagement ring is made of white gold and I am now in the process of finding a suitable wedding ring. More than likely I will go for rose gold as I love the two toned look, but was also contemplating platinum as an option.
I have heard things about platinum "eating" gold and that they should not be worn together - can anybody confirm this or share experiences?

Over time two different metals will eat away at each other more than two same metals, but I don't know actually how long it would take. My concern with WG and plat is that they look very different to me.

I would be more concerned with how each of them wear over time. Platinum will always stay the same silvery-white color, while white gold will turn back into a buttery yellow color and will need to be rhodium plated. I fear that this will be more noticeable next to platinum, so for me I would pick white gold so they at least wear the same and the color change of the metal looks less 'off'.

Well it won't turn a yellowish color, which white gold will. I have a platinum engagement ring and love the patina that it is starting to develop. Grayish looks more silvery white to me than buttery yellow from a white gold ring in need of rhodium plating.

Gold is yellow and will always be yellow, which is why white gold is never truly white. That said, I've seen an alloy or two of white gold that claims to never need rhodium plating to remain white.

I also find that my platinum, which has what imo looks like a pretty developed patina, only looks what I'd consider grey if it's dirty. Give it a good scrub and it looks pretty white again. Not super reflective, but definitely silvery white. I think dirt gets caught in the tiny furrows and makes it look darker until it's cleaned.

I've been wearing a platinum wedding band with my white gold engagement ring for 9 years. They fit very flush together, so I haven't had any trouble with the 2 different metals rubbing or wearing away so far.

They do have a slightly different appearance though, and that may bother some people. The platinum is more gray, and the white gold is yellow-toned (I haven't had it rhodium plated for years). I really only notice it on the backside of my hands, since the top of the rings have diamonds on the bands and very little metal is visible. I probably wouldn't do it with a solitaire and a plain wedding band. Everyone thinks mine is made as a matching set, so I don't think it looks too bad!

Hi, I have to say the "eating" issue is not that precise. platinum and gold are of different hardness, thus when wearing them together, edges of them would get some abrasion damage, thus it is better to wear your precious jewelry separately. As far as I am concerned, platinum is actually a good chose than whit gold and rose gold. They are more rare due to the the not that much production, in addition, it is truly more suitable to be inlaid with various gems, while other gold may not that convenient for matching with gems. If you pay more attention to aspects of beauty, i guess platinum can be your first choose.

Agreed. A good scrub will certainly brighten mine up a bit, but I've had mine for almost a year so it isn't too crazy just yet. I would notice more yellow that I would gray in a metal.

I cant' add to this discussion as points are already made so I will just say GO ROSE GOLD!!! I love rose gold and if it looked better against my skin tone I would probably do everything in rose gold! I love the two tone look as well.

However if you do white gold and plat you could always get a rose gold stacker or spacer. Just a thought!

Thank you everybody for being so helpful and informative! Another point to consider would be that I may consider resetting my engagement ring in platinum in the future... but that's a long way off! I think rose gold is my preference for now, but then again I'm fickle so may change my mind still! Thank you all again.

I have 2 rose gold wedding bands, so I am ALL FOR THIS option!

Have you considered a diamond band rather than a plain band?

My 2-mm plain platinum band serves as a "wedding band" when paired with my ER AND a spacer when sandwiched between my ER and diamond band (eternity in this case). In the former case, it helps keep my ER from turning sideways. In the latter case, it protects the metal from diamonds (and also diamonds from diamonds).

If you want a plain band, perhaps think in terms of other functions besides color and metal.

If you plan to change your current setting to platinum at some point, I would certainly get platinum for the wedding band.
