I can post some pictures which will show you some actual size differences.

These photos help so much. I think part of me is worried about regretting not going for the 1.5 carat. I could probably up the budget to get the 1.5 carat, however, I’d only be able to do that if I can keep my current ring.

@diamondseeker’s advice is golden.

From experience, I second her advice regarding color.
My initial e ring was an F, I2 clarity... was sold to my husband as an SI and he didn't know better :( When we upgraded, I went with much better genuine VS clarity, but H in color.
Though many people are okay with I and J, I guess being used to an F made the H somewhat of a disappointment.
Yet in the meantime my studs are H and it doesn’t bother me as much tho I would like to upgrade one day. Different people are more color sensitive though, I did the pantone test and everything made sense lol.

I do agree that a G is probably my cut-off after seeing side-by-side photos.

Thanks for the finger shot! Whiteflash sent me a pic of a .72 next to a 1.36 and the difference is significant. I definite see the difference between the 1.3 and 1.5 in the photo above, but if going up to a 1.5 would cost me a new setting, I'm not sure I could afford the 1.5 as well as the new setting.

This is what the size difference would be if I upgraded from my current diamond to a 1.3

You will need a new setting for either size stone, but it is possible they might be able to put a new head on your current ring. I really advise you to go for the largest stone now and get the cheapest temporary solitaire setting or change of the head on your current ring now. Then in a year or so, you can change to a new setting if you wish. If you do go to a 1.3 ct, I'd go for the 1.36 F. I'd go to G VS2 to get 1.5 cts.

I will follow up with Whiteflash to see what all of my options are. I never thought of getting a cheap setting temporarily and then upgrading the setting later. This is a great suggestion. I like the 1.5 G VS2 diamond you suggested.

the likelihood of you needing a new setting is quite high with your current setting securing a .71 ct. that same setting is unlikely to be able to accomodate a 1.5ct or even a 1.36ct

Can you clarify? Is the setting the entire ring or just the top part with the prongs?

The setting is the whole ring. Depending on the style, sometimes they can remove the part with the prongs, which is the head, and replace it with one to fit the new stone. Even if they can't, there are some inexpensive simple solitaires you could use temporarily (and some people use them forever, of course!).

This is the lowest price I see, but the prongs are really too high on this one and the same one with 4 prongs. Greater danger of knocking the stone on something!

This is my current setting and I love it so much I wasn't prepared to part with it!Whiteflash_19968_051011c.jpg

This one looks pretty similar, actually, but if I spent the extra couple of thousand to upgrade to the 1.5 carat I probably can't afford this one... yet.

unfortunately, often times, the setting is part of the sacrifice to upgrading to a larger diamond, at least large enough, where the current setting cannot accommodate the larger diamond

I noticed that your current ring and diamond are from Whiteflash.

Are you aware of the Customer Loyalty Program? This Program is described on the Whiteflash website, under the heading 'Why Whiteflash'. This Program provides a $100 discount to repeat customers.

Also, under the same heading "Why Whiteflash', and the sub-heading 'Lifetime Trade-Up Guarantee', you'll note that designer engagement rings have been added to the Lifetime Trade-Up Benefit.

The following is copied from that section of the Whiteflash website.

"In what may be a first in the jewelry industry, Designer Engagement Rings have been added to our Trade Up Benefit. Purchasers of designer rings who upgrade their diamonds may not be able to use the same setting, especially when changing the size or shape of the center diamond. This benefit is to help facilitate that process and make it less costly for the customer to execute an upgrade. However, it is not necessary to upgrade your center diamond in order to take advantage of our Designer Engagement Ring benefit.

All engagement rings from the collections of our designer partners Tacori, Verragio, Simon G, Ritani, A.Jaffe, Danhov, Vatche, Valoria, and Benchmark are eligible for trade up to any other single designer engagement ring of this group of designers that is equal to or greater in value. 50% of the original sale price for the item will be credited toward the new purchase."

You'll have to speak to Whiteflash to find out if you're entitled to the ring Trade-Up Benefit; it may have come into effect after your original purchase was made.

I'm looking forward to seeing your new diamond/ring when its completed! Regardless of what diamond you go with, it will be gorgeous! You were very wise, when choosing your current ring, to go with a company that has a great trade-up policy. :)

Thanks for pointing this out. Unfortunately I don't qualify. My setting is old and not carried by whiteflash anymore and it wasn't designed by any of those designer partners.
