Whiteflash ACA vs OEC/OMC

Interesting! Why are AVCs cut deeper? ..... As I think of it, the shape must dictate the needed depth.
It’s that way with all cushion cut. My 2.16 carat faces up to look similar to a 1.8 carat round.

Would an AVR in the .8 - .9ct range be considered small? Average?

Hi there! I can help out with some videos that I took recently for a friend who was asking the same question. (please excuse dirt on my hands from gardening--or trying to garden) The first video has a loose Brian Gavin Signature super ideal J VS2 .7ct 5.7mm diamond next to a costco 5.7mm .7ct ideal cut diamond in an earring setting, and a 7mm loose ideal cut oec diamond (not certed but the light performance is fabulous and the only way I could match that stone is to buy an AVR, all other oecs fall short) the halo earring stud has an uncerted 5.2mm round brilliant (sold to me as ideal cut and perfroms every bit as well as my certed stones), super ideal cut has a slight edge on the regular ideal cuts as far as light performance, though it is small, but I love it lol. Oh the random dangle earring at the bottom has a 6.2mm I color SI1 oec in it. And for reference my e-ring has a 7.4mm oec, VS2 clarity, it would cert a GIA K or very white facing L at the lowest. I'd put my money on a K though when compared to my certed stones

Here it is:

The second video set is a 1 on 1 comparison with 2 diamonds...an ideal cut GIA certed triple excellent .80ct I SI1 next to a beautifully well cut EGL certed I color SI1 clarity 1.07ct oec that measures 6.3-6.5mm. PLease ignore my talking, I was trying to help my guy friend decide, I did so many takes and said practically the same thing in each video so feel free to mute it! lol

I have a 0.81ct AVR, and I don't think the size is too small - I can easily see the facet patterns, and the light show is divine!

What a thrill! Your videos are perfect. I’m going to take notes on what I’m seeing and rewatch them several times. And..... your e-ring! :rolleyes2: (thud). Thank you so much for this. It’s very helpful!

I’d love to see some pictures and hand shots if you could. =)2

You're so welcome, I'm glad they helped!!! The one on one comparison was really helpful for my friend because he was looking for a diamond almost that exact size. That's why I made so many videos for him. Glad they can go to good use and help someone else!
Oh somehow the last video link didn't show a video pop up...if you click the link it is there though. Also, keep in mind that both stones in person were just gorgeous and the videos really can't show the sparkle and glow that they have irl, though it does give a good idea and hopefully can help you decide what your eye prefers

I agree 5.8-6mm size is really gorgeous. My e-ring in the past was 5.8mm and I could see all the facets beautifully. I will soon have some White Flash ACA studs that will be about 6mm each and I'll post some comparison videos when I get them.

I just found this August Vintage video comparing two cushions; an August Vintage and a modern brilliant. Hopefully it will help someone else too. =)2

Hello all! I need a bit of education and perhaps comparison pictures. :roll2:

What is the difference between a modern ACA cut and an old cut diamond? I mean, besides the cut shape..... What characteristics do they both hold? Do those who prefer vintage jewelry prefer OEC/OMCs? Does one sparkle more than the other? How do they compare price wise for the same ct weight?

What is your preference?
Thanks!
I think you have already received a lot of good feedback, and it seems you are leaning toward a vintage style cut. But just to respond to the original question, I would say first that the differences are quite pronounced. As you move from old mine cut to OEC/transitional to MRB the differences start to diminish. But it is kind of like flavors of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream- each can be delicious but they are very different and people tend to have their favorite.

With regard to MRB, particularly in precision cut, you get optimized performance across brightness, fire, and scintillation. You get harmonized performance across a wide spectrum of lighting conditions. The diamond consists of a carefully designed and crafted system of tiny mirrors that scan the environment for light and reflect and refract a high volume of light back to your eye. A high degree of optical symmetry creates very efficient handoffs of light among corresponding facets, delivering a precise scintillation pattern that is predictable and consistent. A balanced mix of virtual facets results in a pleasing combination of sparkle, flash and fire.

The vintage cuts that harken back to the early days of diamond cutting tend to have fewer and/or larger virtual facets that are geared towards flash and fire. The scintillation patterns are not as fast or numerous – sparkle is not the primary visual. Depending on the cut precision, these patterns may be even or they may be more random. The overall look has a flavor and a charm that is distinctive and has great appeal to many diamond enthusiasts.

Cuts that are geared to maximizing fire look their best in a narrower range of lighting conditions. Ideal cut MRBs are designed to adapt and deliver across virtually any environment where light is present.

You might think of it as vintage cars. The originals have a special charm because they have a compelling history. Those that have been refurbished are spruced up and more functional. The modern automobiles are packed with performance and accessories that might not resemble the cars that our parents and grandparents drove.

The qualitative and quantitative differences between these different flavors are in the realm of personal taste. The one that is better is the one you like the most!

Sure! Ring size 5.5, AVR 0.818ct G VS2. It faces up so white and sparkly. The camera was causing some obstruction in the close-up view.

That’s such a beautiful ring! :kiss2: Your stone looks perfect - just like something I’d like for myself. Do you happen to know the mm? I can think in mm better than ct. Thanks for sharing!
