Hi everyone,

I've been a lurker here for a few months, learning as much as I can about diamonds and settings. After much searching for an eye-clean SI1 ideal-cut stone with the major online vendors, I finally found one on WF that met my specs:

Carat 1.267
Color G
Clarity SI1 (eye-clean from the top and sides)
Depth % 61.5
Table % 57.0
Crown Angle 34.9
Pavilion Angle 40.9
Measurements 6.96x6.99x4.29

The setting was even harder to find. Initially my heart was set on a modern solitaire a la the Legato Sleek Line or similar. However, I discussed engagement rings with my gf, and I'm glad I did, because I learned that she prefers halo settings with pave. Together we viewed dozens of pictures online, including several on here, and then I got back to Liza at WF with my specifications -- with the Guinevere setting as the base (which I loved from seeing wenwen's pics on here), add fishtail pave and milgrain to the halo, and space out the struts underneath the halo so that more of the center stone is visible. Obviously I was also inspired by some of the hand-forged settings posted on the forum, however, as much as I appreciate the advantages of hand-forged settings, they turned out to be out of my price range.

So, without further ado, here are the CAD images from Whiteflash. Please let me know what you think, and since I still need to approve the design, please be as critical as possible =) Specifically I am thinking about possibly lowering the halo a bit so that the diamond sits closer to the finger, and adding milgrain to the sides of the halo too, not just the top, so that it looks like the edge of a quarter coin. I would really appreciate your feedback!

Hi gvn2fly! Looks like a beautiful ring you've created! I may end up being in the minority but I like the milgrain on the halo and not on the band. The question is, do you think your gf will? Is she a stickler for matching and symmetry? If so, you might add milgrain to the band (as you suggested) or remove it completely. I'm sure other experts will weigh in on height, but it looks fine to me.

I ran your stone specs through the HCA and though it scored of 1.9, it gave it Very Goods across the board. Typically, ideal cut stones will get EX, EX, EX, VG. Is there any particular reason you're gravitating towards this stone?

No I didn't mean milgrain on the band, I meant milgrain on the halo itself, around the edges. The way it is now, you can only see the milgrain from the top, but I want the halo to look milgrained even from the side.

Regarding the diamond, I looked at the HCA score, and it's weird that it has 1.9 given VG/VG/VG/VG, and this was something I meant to ask about on the forum previously. There is no reason I chose this particular stone other than the price. It is an ACA stone, though, so how relevant is the HCA score? I do want the best cut I can get for the price.

I think most ACA's fall into the low 2's IIRC, so I wouldn't let that bother you...

HCA is pass/fail Anything below a 2 passes. And if the stone is an AGS0 then it's already been evaluated for light performance and you don't even need to consider the HCA at all. It's strictly a rejection tool not a selection tool.

I vote for milgrain on the halo. I think it's going to be a beautiful ring!!!  Congrats, I can't wait to see the finished shots!

Ok good! Glad to know it's an ACA and therefore there's nothing to worry about!

Whoops! I guess I could have seen the ACA part for myself if I'd looked at your link  Sorry if I caused you any alarm!

Also, thanks for the clarification, Christina. The 1.9 score with the VGs just threw me off a little :wink2:

I love the design you chose! I really think adding or not adding the milgrain to the side of the halo is a personal choice, but maybe for symmetry's sake, I do think adding milgrain on the side might work. Although, I think I'd just worry about it being *too* much milgraining. Can they add it on the CAD before you approve? Just so you can see what it may look like when completed. But the overall design is definitely a "yes!!"

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your feedback so far. I asked WF to send comparison pics for a couple of changes to my design.

1) Lowering the halo by 0.5mm and the center stone by an additional 0.3mm. This is so there isn't too much empty space underneath the stone and the ring won't look too chunky or get caught in clothing, etc.
2) Changing the tilt angle of the halo. The Guinevere halo comes with a tilt of 30º, but I would like to reduce it to 20º or 25º. They sent me a pic to show an extreme case of what it would look like with a 15º tilt.
3) Adding a row of milgrain to the bottom of the halo as well, so it looks a little more milgrained from the side. My girlfriend has told me that she would prefer there be as little visible metal as possible, so my thought is that with more milgrain, there will be less "plain" metal.

Here are the corresponding pics. Please let me know what you think of my tentative modifications.

Example - Halo down 0_5mm - Center down 0_3mm.jpg

Example - Halo angle 30 deg versus 15 deg.jpg

Example - Two rows of milgrain.jpg

I like your changes, I think the double milgrain is a really nice detail!

This time with real pictures from Whiteflash. The ring has yet to be shipped but I'll post more in SMTB once I get the ring. And, of course, hand shots when the time is right ;)

Oh my gosh, it looks so gorgeous!!

Hi gvnfly... I really love your design and I was at white flash two days ago and really likes the Guinevere pave so I really enjoyed your custom design. Im not sure if it is too personal but can u tell me how mob ur setting was? I would like to design my own and would like to have an idea of how much it cost. Thank you so much **edited by moderator. please do not post your personal information on the forum for your own safety** Thanks in advance. I really love your ring
