We had a joint timeline. We dated for a year, then moved in together. At that point, we said that we would like to get engaged after living together for one year and that's pretty much how it worked out. We wanted to make sure we weren't rushing things, and 2 years together seemed like a good amount of time, though we began discussing marriage 6 months after we started dating.
I loved having a timeline. I am not one to sit around and wait for a guy to suddenly decide he wants to propose. By having a timeline together, we both knew when it was coming and what to expect. Also, I designed my ring, so I guess there wasn't much surprise there either.
I think the timeline also kept us moving along. It's one thing to say "oh, we'll get engaged eventually" but since we had a timeline in mind, we knew when we had to start getting the ring made, etc. Kind of like the wedding - if I hadn't had a set date for it, I never would've got the planning done
eta: LilyKat, it seems we think alike on engagement topics
