Hi, Everyone.
I know how experienced all of you are in vendors. I need someone who can recut a fabulous Tourmaline. It has quite the window. I think if it was recut .... Spectacular!! Please help. Also, how pricey is it to do a recut? t's about a five-carat stone.
P.S. Not this stone.

I know two vendors that regularly recut stones for clients. They are both very nice to deal with and reasonably priced (IMHO).

I suggest you contact them via email with photos and a description of your stone to get an estimate.

Dan Stair - http://www.customgemstones.com/RECUTS/Recuts.html Dan cuts by the hour.

Jerry Newman http://www.gemartservices.com/index.html Jerry charges per piece (if I remember correctly).

I think it would be impossible for someone on PS to estimate what it will cost because it is going to depend on how much recutting (complete or just some refaceting) will be needed.

Cool stone and nice pic but I hope you don't mind I brightened it up a bit to see the tourmaline better.

How much depth you have to work with will determine how much weight and size you lose. A pavilion-only recut would allow you to keep the same face-up size, but if you don't have sufficient depth it won't be possible. If the stone is windowed because it is shallow, you are looking at more serious weight and size loss. Any idea of the the depth of the stone relative to LxW?

What is your expectation of how the stone would be "spectacular?" That, close up photos of the stone, along with the the stone specs will help determine whether its even a good candidate for a recut. If it is, you should have no problem with either of the vendors listed. Good luck!

This is the other stone I bought. It is beautiful..prettier in person. I'm just thrilled with it.

Can't wait to see your photos!

10.3 x 11.6 x 6.2 mm is on the shallow end and might not be a viable candidate. Any sideview picture to get a better idea of where the bulk of the weight lies? A 50-ish% depth means there's not much to work with and you might be better off leaving it alone. The total carat weight loss and smaller face up size might not be worth it as the final colour is likely to be affected as well.
