I smelled my dog with the itchy paws, and she smells like Fritos.
I smelled my other dog (by now the cat was staring at me), the "control" dog for this experiment, and she also smells like Fritos.
I smelled my cat (who enjoyed that very much, oddly) and he smells like he's been hanging on the line outside all day; he smells like fresh linen and sunshine.
Now I'm just perplexed and I am dying to know what the answer to the original post is . . .
Umm... I admit to smelling my dog's feet after reading this thread
And yes, they smell like corn chips!
My furbaby has allergies too - It sounds like it correlates with the corn chip smell
His allergies usually flare up in the spring and we have to give him Benadryl pills, Claritin nasal spray (can you say FUN. ), and sometimes ear drops. He was on prednisone for a while and that made him guzzle water like crazy (oh how i don't miss the frequent peepee trips during that period)! If I couldn't come home during my lunch break to let him out, there were puddles of piddle by the door when I got home at 5:00. I felt so bad because I know my guy tried to hold it but couldn't anymore.
Puppmom - I hope your doggie feels (and smells) better soon!
Puppmom, it could be a skin problem. But when you take him to the vet, if they don't figure it out right then, you might have a blood panel & urinalysis done. Expensive, but kidney, liver, or pancreatic troubles can allow toxins into the blood, which makes them stinky. Of course, his food allergies might influence or cause those problems too.
After you bathe him, I'm sure you wash his bedding -- you mentioned Febreze so I guess you de-smell wherever he usually lies. When I had an odor issue with one of my Siberians, his bed reeked & if I didn't throw it in the washer when I bathed him, the smell just rubbed off on him again at night.
Let us know what they come up with -- I'm interested. Good luck & lovely-aroma-dust for you!
Vet appointment not until Wednesday but I think you're all on to something with the skin. Hollis smells RANK and we've noticed some small gray spots on his groin. They almost look like mildew you would see on a bathroom wall or something. I think the spots weren't apparent to us at first because we bathed him then inspected him. So, I'm guessing it's some sort of yucky fungus.
The good news is that it does not seem to bother him and it's hopefully resolved pretty easily. From what I'm reading though, there is usually an underlying cause that must be addressed to avoid recurrence.
Alright dog detectives...getting a pic of my dog's groin was NOT easy but this morning I noticed that the spots I mentioned are growing and there are more of them. They literally went from small specs to this in a couple of days. Pretty sure this yuckiness is why he is a stinky pants! If I rub the spots, they do come off but I'm going to leave him alone so the vet can get a good look tomorrow.
Amazing! His nose may have died due to over-use. Great to know what it is, at least, and that it's nothing serious. Thanksgiving present for you!! (And doggy.)
So glad you have a diagnosis and it's not a serious illness. Hope it clears up quickly and you can enjoy some snuggle time with a sweet smelling pooch soon!
