Why doesn't AGS/GIA put a comment on their reports if the stone..

Thanks TL, so the word "brown" well not appear on the report if the stone is graded J color or higher?

Yes, that is correct. Brown appears right next to the letter grade on GIA stones K and lower. No clue about AGS though. I cannot recall seeing a brown AGS stone below a J. Any experts care to chime in? :)

Exactly. Only when the color is present at a level that can reveal an obvious hue is it mentioned. In the colorless and near colorless range there is simply not enough color impact to be reliably distinguished. Remember that you could have some yellow and some brown as well, so making those distinctions could be very challenging in the D-J range. And for most people it probably does not matter that much. So it is a sensible way that GIA approaches it.

Wanted to chime in since I was looking for "faint brown" for a while. Its frustrating that you can't use that to search, and just need to open every gia report for stones under J to check. But yes, if there's a brown undertone then it will be noted next to the color stone on the report (but only for stones under J color).

Would GIA ever note details about colour in the comments when grading a D-Z stone? My belief was not?

I've can't recall any sort of comment specifically about the hue in a D-Z
I do have some recollection of GIA noting the presence of brown in an H color....but it was in the '80's....

Another interesting aspect is how GIA treats Pink. The slightest whiff of pink might get Faint Pink. Taking the stone off the D-Z scale, even though the color can be super difficult to see.
I really wish they'd do the same for brown......maybe even yellow!

As far as reporting hazy there are a lot of different things that can make a diamond hazy that show up under different lighting and not on others that making a definitive call in the depths of a lab might be a little hard.
For example haze from scattering micro-inclusions shows up in bright direct lighting where haze from surface graining would be more likely to be observed in flat dispersed lighting.
Where haze or oily from flour would only show up under strong UV.
That is the opposite of one and done one machine grading that is where they want to go.
So basically diamond grading is moving away from the possibility of subjective multiple environment grading that would make it possible to report hazy.

I did not know either since we handle so few stones past J color. But I checked with AGSL and they do not follow the GIA practice of reporting hue in the normal range (D-Z).
