Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mounting?

Hi all! So I have purchased a preloved Whiteflash mounting that I LOVED. It used to hold a 2c diamond 11x7. I'm wanting a gemstone. Probably blue. Possibly pink/raspberry. But I don't have much of a budget. I'd like to stay near $500 for a stone but I'm not sure I can make that work. What are your thoughts please? Sapphire, spinel, tanzanite, rubellite, rhodlite. Maybe aquamarine or zircon but I don't care for the pale versions. I just love the beautifully cut stones that you can just get lost in staring at it - know what I mean?
So experts please tell me if you think I can make this work and please let me know if you've come across anything you think I should take a look at. Thanks all!!

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

It might work but there will be a lot of ifs. BTW, the WF mounting is droolworthy!

When you mentioned blue, how deep a colour are you looking for? I know you don't like pale colours but it would be good to know if you like them dark or medium. Also how rich of a colour do you have in mind? The more vivid the colour, the more pricing increases.

Sapphires might be priced out of your budget unless you go for something pale-ish or quite far from the desired hue and saturation.
Spinels are also getting pricey too but as long as it isn't red, it could be doable.
Rubellite and Rhodolite are purplish red to strongly purple, so I take it you are all right with those too?
The same goes for the other gem varities. I guess with the shape and size limitation, it will be good to scout all gem types.

Thanks Chrono! I loved the mounting the moment I saw it.
Of course I love the deep blues but certainly don't mind lighter. I seem to be discovering how much I just love a sparkly flashy cut in a colored stone. So I think its the cut that may be more important to me than the color.

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

Some custom cutters will cut a stone to the dimensions of a setting. You might ask around to Barry, Gene, Dan, the usual suspects (their sites are on the sticky at the top of this forum, the trusted vendors thread).

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

I love your setting too - its very pretty. I was going to suggest ebay until you indicated a desire for good cutting. You may get lucky on ebay, but I would agree that your first stop should probably be the precision cutters. I love your description of staring at it and getting lost in it - welcome to the club of getting honked at intersections because the light turned green and you didn't notice  ...

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

what a lovely setting and a fun project. one thing i'd recommend you think about is how often you are planning to wear this ring and how gentle you are with your rings. it sounds like you are relatively new to colored stones, and i think i learned pretty quickly is that some/many are not ideal for daily wear. good luck, and can't wait to see what you find!

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

I just went and checked out ebay for you since they often have some fairly cheap stones that might fit the bill. But the stones they had tended not to be well cut and your 11 x 7 dimensions I don't think are that common.

I bet someone who has inventory online, like Litnon, Mastercut, or Gemrite will have a stone you like that will fit the setting. I can imagine all sorts of gorgeous stones in that setting... :lickout:

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

minous - I LOVE the color of that tourmaline. I'm still partial to blues if I can find one I can afford and drool over =) But I'm putting this one on my save list.

slksapphire - I do plan to wear it as my wedding "set" so mostly all the time. Though I do remove for showering and cooking. I don't think I'm hard on my rings but I don't know that for sure. So I think to be safe I'd like to try and stay with sapphire or spinel - just not sure if I can do it with my budget.

I did see this one on Ebay (I think this is Tan) its ended but tell me what you think. I may try and contact him to see if its still available.

Thanks again all. I can't wait to have cars start honking at me!!!

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

Personally I think you would be disappointed with that blue when you got it in hand. It appears to have a lot of extinction...black spots=no colour. Or rather soooo dark it won't even look blue most of the time.

If you look at the darkest part of the stone in these videos, that is probably the colour it will be without all the lighting required to make it sparkly as it turns.

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

Thank you Starzin!
I just realized that an important bit I forgot to leave out is - I'm colorblind. Actually really diagnosed colorblind. SO while I have read and am trying to absorb all the great info I do often have a lot of trouble telling if I see a window or any extinction in a photo. I also think its why I prefer the richer tone gems. I just can't see the blue in a pale aqua
I'm so glad I asked on this one!

ROFL! I think you mean you forgot to include it

And you're trying to pick a gem based on colour photos on the web....hmmm. You realise this does pose a bit of difficulty? Do you want something you can see or something that we judge to be a better colour than you might be able to see?

ETA: Actually it will be a miracle if we can find a blue or reddish stone of the right size let alone whether or not you can see it

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

Another question...are you red/green or blue/yellow colour blind? Or indeed something else.

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

oooops - yes, I forgot to include my colorblindness

I'm red/green color blind

I don't have anyplace near me where I can go and see stones first. Well just retail - and they don't have what I'm looking for. So web searching it is for me. So yes, what I'm hoping for is for the folks who know better to show me or to judge what they see as a good color. I can see the overall tones I like (I think - my husband may disagree tho!) but I can't trust what I'm seeing and am not really able to interpret a photoshopped image to what it may look like IRL.

Thanks to everyone so far - and thanks to LD for the awesome post on New to coloured gemstones post. I'm learning SO much!

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

oooooh PRETTY! See its so hard for me to decide between blue and pink  Is it just me or does this stone look way pinker in the picture on the hand. The other shots look red to me.

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

That's a brilliant find NKOTB! I was beginning to think that a garnet was going to be the best bet simply because of the colour/price, shape and wearability.

jbk - yes it is a little pinker on the hand - or at least half of it is ;)) The other half in that particular shot is extinct (not sparkling). But the other shots are quite good I think. Bear in mind that it may well do that for you in different lighting.

This is an unbelievably good find by NKOTB, I would strongly suggest you give it full consideration.

Finding a sapphire or spinel - i.e. a blue stone - in the exact size you want, for the price point you want, AND a pear, is going to be well nigh impossible.

When going to red/pink it's going to be a long hunt for a spinel or garnet, basically those are your options for gems that lend themselves to your specifications.

ETA: And this is a precision cut stone, so it will perform. The only other thing I was going to suggest is to actually start contacting cutters to ask if they have some rough that will cut to your specs.

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

Thank you Starzin and NKOTB. Your help is awesome! I do really like this stone but I do so really like blue. I think it may be time to "discuss" the budget with the hubs =)
Or maybe I'll start with pink and switch to blue in a year or two. This is so much fun!!

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

Certainly finding a precision cut blue pear on a whim will be a challenge, and that size within that budget, well... Here's what you're likely to find in terms of a sapphire, for example: http://www.multicolour.com/detail/?2123414511

And I agree, that sapphire of Tan's is likely to be too dark.

Aquamarine is a possibility. Here's what Africagems has currently: http://www.africagems.com/aquamarine-pear.html.. This one is a touch too long: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-99ct-Glitters-Pear-Shape-Natural-Sky-Blue-Aquamarine-/251039264795?pt=Loose_Gemstones_1&hash=item3a731b301b#ht_1960wt_958

Or there's morganite, for a lighter pink. Dan Stair would be a good person to be in touch with for aqua or morganite, I think.

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

This brings up a good point. I have had three different people tell me three different sizes. Previous owner said she had an 11x7 diamond. One jeweler told me the ring will hold a 10x8 and another told me 10x6. Is there a better way to figure the size that will work? Or should I just err on the small size?

Thank you NKOTB (or not :D ) I thought I wouldn't like aquas at all but I do like the color of that Ebay one! Too bad its too big - no matter who measured.

I like this spinel too - but will this be way dark too?

I like this tanzanite too (is this how the breaking the budget will start? =) )

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

I can't answer your question re: size, sorry - not experienced enough yet.

I think that spinel will be pretty dark, yes.

That tanzanite looks very nice, and 33 dollars over budget ain't too bad (and yes, it's a VERY slippery slope!). :Up_to_something:

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

Did you buy it from a member on PS? You might be able to search their threads to find out the exact measurements of their stone.

If it wasn't from PS, you can ask Whiteflash directly as they keep that information on file. However, the previous owner has to indicate that they have sold the setting and you are the new owner.

I find that spinel too dark, but the tanzanite is beautiful. I also liked the red precision pear that NKOTB found earlier. That was lovely.

I think you should try to find out the dimensions that will fit for sure before trying to find the stone. Your local jeweler should be able to help you out if the previous owner can't and WF can't.

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

Thank you ladies!

I did not buy from a PS member but I do have the original receipt so I am in contact with WF. That was a great idea - hopefully they can tell me what measurements I can work with. At the moment I may be leaning toward having them do the work too. I hesitate just because it will be that much longer that I don't have the ring but I imagine I'll be happier with the results.

Barry and Gene both do not have any sapphires or sapphire rough for me but I'm still plugging along. I do really like that tanzanite so if WF tells me it will fit that may be what I go with. But for now I'll keep searching and emailing. I have a message out to Jeff too. And I keep coming back to that malaya pear too.....<sigh>

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

The spinels you have posted are both really dark; I doubt you will be pleased with them. The garnet is quite nice. Perhaps the pink/red change is the colour shifting which is common in some stones. I really like the bright and well coloured tanzanite. You did say it will be an occasional RHR stone? I would be very cautious with a ring set tanzanite.

Also, I've heard that WF will no longer set customer provided stones and I know they do not feel comfortable setting garnets anymore, which I've inquired in the past. It would be good to get confirmation if the above is true.

Interesting, any idea why not garnets in particular?

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

If its an occasional ring, I vote the tanzanite as well. I think its beautiful.

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

I agree with the others' evaluation of the spinel...in fact it not only looks too dark (same problem as the first one you posted) but the colour looks "dirty" to me.

The tanzanite looks to be a lovely colour but is anyone else thinking that might be zoning on the point? If it is that would probably rule it out for me. Although this is all a moot point if the sizing (10x8) is too small for the setting.

And yes, this is how budget creep begins

The garnet will be hardier than the tanzanite, they're really quite tough little stones.

Re: Will I be able to find a stone for my Whiteflash mountin

That's so funny, I was JUST looking at that one! I think it may be too deep though.....

Nope, sorry, the garnet is still the better stone and cut.
