Will my setting hold a larger stone

My current engagement ring was purchased from Kay Jewlers and holds a 1 carat cushion cut stone. My husband and I want to upgrade to a 2 carat, but when I look at the ring on the vendor website, it says it can hold .2 to 1.22 carats. Is this typically a firm range? Or could my setting possibly accommodate a larger stone? Here are pics of my ring so you get an idea of how it's made. Thanks in advance!!!

Just looking at your setting with its current stone, it's not likely that it could be revised to accommodate a 2.0 carat stone.

Yes I would say it is firm.

Once you go over 7.5mm a peg head just looks weird to me on a ring.

Well Darn it SB621 and VRBeauty - that's not the answer I was looking for! I guess I won't be getting much of an upgrade, then...now will I?? Thanks for your help - I'm an idiot when it comes to these things

Hardly - you were smart enough to ask before buying your dream diamond!

If you're intent on keeping the same setting, you could still upgrade the center stone with a better quality stone - as in higher color, cut, or clarity. Just be aware that it might not be 1.22 carat stone. If you decide to go in this direction, you should check with a jeweler to make sure the setting can accommodate the head that would be needed to support a 1.22 ct stone. (I doubt Kay would have sold exactly the same setting for a .2 ct stone and a 1.22 ct stone.)

It looks like it could be a peg head so I would ask your jeweler.

I would still upgrade to 2cts but put in a solitare. It would look amazing flanked between your two wedding bands :naughty:

Absolutely you can still upgrade and use your existing wedding bands! But please don't upgrade with Kay's because we can direct you to great quality stones at better prices. Many people just save for the upgrade and keep the original diamond to use in a pendant or other ring. But you can always sell the diamond if you need to use the money towards the new stone. Often though, you just don't get enough to make it worth selling because the stone may have been overpriced to begin with. That is the main reason not to upgrade from the original store (to not overpay twice).

I would sooner die than buy anything from Kay (ever again)! I already had to trade in one ring purchased from them because it was falling apart (it lost 4 diamonds in a year) - they fought me the whole way through. We tried to get a refund so we could go to a REAL jeweler, but they wouldn't budge - and that's how I got this set. I'm not sure if we overpaid, but I really do love the rings (as they are). However, as income increases, so does my husbands desire to provide a larger diamond. I don't plan on fighting him on that

hah cant blame you there! i would definitely consider upgrading your stone and sticking with a solitaire, you can always upgrade the setting another time!

That's a peg head. The limit to fitting a peg head is the space between the wings on the shoulders, and the limit on that is the length of the bridge, which is the part that the head is soldered to. This can be replaced with another of any length you want. Unless there's something that isn't visible in the picture, this mounting should be able to take a head for any size and any shape you like. Talk to your setter and show them the ring to be sure but I don't see any problems so far.

Looks very likely to me. I have settings like that with an 8mm round stone in them. For around 2ct, they can probably use something like Stuller's Round 6-Prong Tulip Style Peg Setting, Item #: 314:174:S for and 8mm stone, and it should fit into there without changing the bridge. But if you choose a very deep 2ct, like Asscher, cushion, or perhaps OEC, they might need to widen the bridge to fit it into there without mounting the stone too high.

You'd need a peg head that is narrow at the bottom and then flares out at the top.

I totally agree with this. Upgrade the stone anyway and put it in a simple solitaire and rock your bands. Then if you really wanted to you could upgrade the setting later on.

Or

Buy this?! Not quite 2cts but still amazing at 1.8 and in this VC setting!

Very likely some sort of spammer or spambot responded to the old thread, bringing it back up to the top. The thread stays at the top of the page even after the spam made it re-surface is deleted.
