With a 1.05 ratio, will this princess appear rectangular?

Those of you who have followed my posts know I have reserved and am considering 2 princess diamonds:

1) http://jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/2.51-carat-H-color-VS2-clarity-sku-194909

2) http://jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/2.54-carat-H-color-VS1-clarity-sku-141671

The second diamond, found and recommended by jstarfireb, appears to have greater brilliance than the first, and so it may be well worth the price difference. My main concern now are the dimensions - 7.59 X 7.22. This gives a ratio of slightly over 1.05. We really want a square princess; will this appear rectangular? Does it lower the value/desirability of the stone?

It will be placed in this setting (all diamonds, no blue sapphires as shown):

http://jamesallen.com/#!/engagement...cess-shaped-diamond-engagement-ring-item-2160

Is there a better way to place the second diamond on the ring should we choose it?

Since you believe that the #2 stone you've placed on hold has "greater brilliance", in person it'll knock the socks off of most stones it's compared to, so you'll be fine if you go with that stone. In the case of a high performing stone, a fraction of a mm shouldn't have a huge impact wrt its appearance.

If it were me, I'd ask JA to provide a video of the 2 diamonds side by side (or even the THREE diamonds - to include Julie's suggestion) so that I could see how square or rectangular they look for myself. I'd also ask JA to use the video to compare & contrast their sparkle to one another as well ... not just a top view, but from the sides and in a variety of lighting conditions. Those comparison vids help so much!!

Does your wife plan to wear her original wedding band with this new ring or are you also getting a wedding band designed to match?

I want to stick with the 2.5 since part of my decision in sending more money was to get a larger stone.

If those are vidos of the actual stonses, I can do my own side-by-side, but I am wondering if they will comply with such a request? Also, will JA match prices? I note that these same diamonds are the same price at Whiteflash, but the Pricescope and wire discounts are greater. I picked JA over whiteflash because their settings are far nicer.

They are videos of the actual stones. That's why I prefer JA. But. I think the tables on both diamonds you picked are too big! I would prefer Julie's stone to the one's you picked. If I remember correctly, we suggested some other stones for you in your other threads that I would still prefer over the one's you picked.

I thought the same thing about the second diamond. Overall I prefer its appearance, but at first glance it looked slightly more rectangular to me. I think it's hard to tell for sure from just these videos though, and I would see if JA would be willing to put the two stones side by side, face up, and take a picture so you can see for yourself.

ETA: I should have said that it looked slightly more recatangular compared to the first stone. However, these images are obviously much bigger than what you will see IRL and I think that once the stone is set that any supposed rectangular appearance would go away. Especially when viewing the diamond on it's own, rather than comparing it side by side to another stone.

No, you can't do your own side-by-side.

Diamonds in real life look nothing like they do in person.

Jstar's pick is of course, superior to yours, but it is higher than your stated budget. And I think the E Si2 has the potential to be very nice, too. The difference in size between it and the 2.5 cts is seriously not that much, it is less than 3%!! You will never notice it!

In my opinion, it looks rectangular.

Re: With a 1.05 ratio, will this princess appear rectangular

After looking at way too many princess stones in my search I can tell you that a 1.05 will look rectangular. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a rectangular look, but squares do come at a premium.
