I blame TL for this! She's an enabler!!!!! I've admired her stunning pear shaped Spess for a while (but managed to resist the temptation) BUT then she goes and buys the step cut AND sets it in an LOGR Legacy setting. Ok, that was too much. I'm weak I admit it. So, off I went scouring the internet!

My shopping criteria was:-
1. Over 1ct
2. Nice and clean!
3. No brown tone
4. A lovely rich colour - hopefully one that looks like a mini volcano.

On Dan's website I found 3. 2 square cuts (both sold I subsequently found out) and his latest cut octagon. So here she is:-

1.98ct
Eye clean/nearly flawless
Nigerian
7.9mm corner to corner / 7.32 from edge to edge (but will need to be set in a 7mm to avoid airlines I think)
Dan says that the stone is brighter than the photo looks with no brown at all

BUT HELP ME WITH FINDING A SETTING!!!! Think accent diamonds. Think LOGR price points. Other than that, I'm open to suggestions!

Ah that looks VERY nice. I just love the shape and can''t wait to see what you think of the color IRL.

Sorry but I have no setting ideas...I''m very bad about finding settings.

That one''s going to be tough. I''ll wait until you receive the stone to get the chance to place it next to a white and yellow metal before deciding.

pretty pretty pretty! can''t wait to see the overflowing lava pictures

LD,
It''s pretty, but it''s not the Fanta orange shade you had told me you wanted. If that''s okay with you, then you should be fine.

Looking forward to pictures.

Thank you for you kind words on my new spess ring. I appreciate it. You are so very kind.

I''ve been very curious to see what those look like in person. I''m glad you got one.

Please post lots of pics when you get it!

No, you''re right TL but the chance of finding a Fanta orange is going to be like finding a needle in a haystack. A mini volcano will do me! I''ve found that I actually veer more towards the red/orange than the yellow/orange - which I hope means less brown. We''ll see.

I thought that if I set this with lots of white accent diamonds it should be an eye-catcher! We''ll see!

Lots of photos of course when it arrives.

In the meantime, I''ve been searching LOGR for settings and doing my "normal" of superimposing the photo from Dan on top of the settings. I''m drawing a blank as to how to set this. Dan suggested it would fit in a setting for a round - but without a halo and I''m pretty sure he''s right. However, I want a halo! I''ve been looking at princess settings etc., but not finding "the one". The search continues .................... :)

Hmmmm, you might have to go custom for a halo since it isn''t a perfect round. A round halo with an octagon shaped stone might look strange (but I could be wrong). If the edges weren''t so pronounced, it might work.

Actually I agree with you. I think a round halo with this stone will be dire! I think an option might be to go with a setting made for a princess but with a wider halo and get it slightly smaller for the Spess sits over the top (kind of like the reverse you''ve done with your step cut spess/cushion setting).

That''s a good idea!! I like roundish stones on square halos. It will have an Art Deco appeal that way. That sort of reminds me of StepCutNut''s setting idea with her mint garnet.

There has been a new find of these spessartite''s from Nigeria. The stones are very clean, but are a darker burnt orange color with some red. They cut pretty stones, but are much different color from the orange spessartite from Tanzania. The Tanzanian material is terrific color, but they all have some degree of ''sugar'' in them. It seems that colored stones are always a compromise, color, shape, clarity, etc. Very rare to find everything in one stone.

With the outline, you can do a round setting but not a halo. It would complicate the setting process and might look odd.

And if it does have everything in one package, it''s going to cost an arm and a leg.

Beautiful stone and I bet you will love it. I can''t wait to see how you will set it.

I love this spess, I am another in the orange/red color camp.

TL I''d completely forgotton that thread! I''d even posted on it and asked where to buy the setting!!! Do you have any idea where the setting came from please?

I believe LOGR makes a similar style, and it can always be modified. I don''t know where SCN got her exact setting though.

LovingDiamonds,
I love the stone. I''m a red stone girl anyway. I don''t have the skin color to carry off orange very well.
I love that shape. I''ve an aqua asscher in that shape. I think it is pretty enough to be in a double clawed solitaire so the shape can shine. You could run a little bit of melee just down the band for bling.

Lovely! What awesome color!

ditto, beautiful!!!

Well, it''s arrived - incredibly quick delivery from Dan. The bad news first. Unfortunately it''s going back. It''s just not the right tone for me and I know that I probably wouldn''t set it and that''s such a waste for a beautiful gemstone.

Even though it''s going back, I have to say that the cut is stunning. The gem is full of fire and flashes and in some lights looks pure orange. For me though, it''s just too dark in some lighting conditions and starts veering to a brown tone. I don''t do brown so know it would just sit in my gem collection and this really needs to go to somebody who wants a dark orange fireball! Even though it''s not for me, I would still highly recommend it. Dan has been a perfect gentleman and was great to work with. Such a pleasure to deal with a lovely vendor.

Anyway, here are the pics in case anybody is interested (please excuse the extreme close ups of my hands - eugh!). My hands look old and wrinkly and I promise that''s not what I see when I look at them!!!

Fire!

Sorry to hear it''s going back; it does look lovely but you should have a gemstone you are completely thrilled with so now you can continue the search. That is always fun.
