Would love some advice on a setting I'm considering!

Thanks Gypsy. I actually decided to give the one eBay a shot that you sent me. I figured a 14-day return policy would keep me from losing anything (other than time). I'll let you know how it turns out! thank you!!!

OMG. You could have bought from Erica or Grace in person! I wish I'd known that.

Listen, if you can-- take that ebay diamond to Patrick Davis for appraisal within the 14 day window. His prices are REALLY affordable and he's VERY well regarded on here and he will help you evaluate the stone.

http://www.jewelryappraiser.net/ You'll need an appraisal for insurance anyway and he's the best in your general area.

And while you are in LA. For your setting.

SN QUEENS is another place I recommend you visit. http://www.yelp.com/biz/sn-queens-jewelry-los-angeles

And Mark Broumand: http://www.markbroumand.com/

And see DAVID KLASS for your setting. His prices are really good. http://www.yelp.com/biz/david-klass-wholesale-jewelry-los-angeles

They will help you get the best setting for your budget! AND I KNOW that PSers have used them happily.

They have a TON of options. And you can't BEAT seeing them in person and they may even have settings available you can just have the stone set in right there while you wait!

It's ok gypsy :) I'll definitely have the diamond looked at when I get it and if isn't good I'll return it. I really appreciate all the info!!! I'll definitely check out the jewelers you sent me!!

If you don't go to an independent appraiser, there is a high risk that the minute you bring in an outside stone they will bad mouth it in order to make you doubt your purchase and buy something from them instead. Especially if you utter the words 'ebay' or "internet'. Then it's all over.

Further if you don't go to a place well acquainted with old cuts you will REALLY get the stone bad mouthed (you might even get one of those wonderful jewelers that tells you the only thing it's good for is to be recut into a modern round brilliant).

There's a reason I gave you the referral to Patrick. He is both independent and acquainted with old cuts. And he's affordable. Plus he's VERY well trained, and most people who call themselves 'appraisers' are nothing more than GIA graduates or worse GIA "trained".... which is like saying someone is a Harvard Graduate. There are good Harvard Graduates, there are crappy Harvard Graduates (look to the Senate if you want examples). And merely being a graduate or worse being 'trained' means nothing.

And there are no accreditation standards for appraisers. In fact the vast majority of them... kinda suck.

So be careful where you go. A high end place is not the guarantee of competency.

And just so you know on the Appraiser's referral on PS there is a guy in Irvine, who is NOT independent and last time someone called him he tried to sell her his own stuff! So even the PS list isn't perfect.

I refer you to PS because I know a ton of people who have gone to him and have attested to his skills, price and character.
