I have a chance to buy an Yvonne Raley ring someone is selling from their personal collection. It is an oval 5 x 7 oval mahenge spinel 1 carat in size in her daisy setting, the setting is the silver platinum alloy mix.

Two things: I would need to have this ring sized from a 7 1/2 to 6 1/2, will that be a problem with the type of alloy in the ring?

I know some shy away from ovals because of bow tie potential, is this a promising looking spinel from the pictures I have?

The asking price is a smudge under $600 so the price is great but if I can't size it or You guys don't think the spinel looks promising then it will be a no go.

I only have a couple of pics for you guys so far, let me know what you think.

I can't speak to the sizing issue for sure but can't imagine it would be a problem. That's not a huge change in size.

I do think you will get half-and-half extinction with this stone (which also drives me crazy with most ovals. Precision cuts can avoid this, but they always look weird to me and I avoid those too). However, the price is great for a Mahenge of that size and also already set into a ring. I would pass on the ring if I felt I could double or triple the budget to get something better, but if that's not in the cards, then this would be a lovely ring for the price.

I would also pass because of the cut. Colour is good though. It depends on how much u would want this colour and for that this is a good price

This is a good price. If you like the color and the shape, you should go for it. I don't think sizing should be a problem.
I have several ovals. I don't seek them out...it just sort of happens. They can have a bow tie but I've never been bothered by it in person. Honestly, most of the time I don't even notice. Having said that, there are a lot of people that can't stand it so it depends on how critical you are of the cut.

It's a beautiful ring so I hope you let us know how it goes.

I would also go for it. I don't find bowties (and/or half and half extinction) bother me too much, if the colour is right. Have you asked what the melee is (i.e. are they daimonds, what size)? It might be nice to know just in case you ever want to resell it. Spinel is generally untreated but I would still ask the seller directly about treatment.

Just to put a spanner in the works you might want to compare aginst this one

You'd want to compare size (face up and ct.), and setting, but also it gives you the trade off. This one has a lot of silk and probably will not display as much half and half extinction (partially thanks to the silk). The one you are considering looks very clean.

Personally I have a burmese red spinel -- and I can tell how much I appreciate the clean crystal -- it really sparkles. So all things being equal I would personally prefer to live with small issues with the cut.

I don't think the half and half extinction detracts too much from the stone. It does not appear to turn dark or blackish which would definitely be something to avoid. IMHO it still is a lovely stone and quite a good price for a Mahenge that size and color. If the diamonds are sparkly (diamonds are so hard to photograph) then I think it would be a beautiful ring to purchase.

I so appreciate all of your responses and thoughts. It's so great to have folks in the know to run things by before purchasing.

That one on LT I saw a couple months ago and definitely considered but ultimately it wasn't for me. This one though had stuck with me but even though most of you gave your blessing, I am going to sleep on it.

The stones in the daisy are diamond 1/3 of a carat described as bright and white but I am verifying with the seller on the actual color and clarity. Truth be told I'm kind of excited to be this close to joining the Yvonne creation club!

CS is above all, colour. That is a decent native cut and the colour and size more than decent at that pricepoint. Indeed just the setting alone would possibly cost the asking price.

I would get it :)

I found this mahenge on Yvonne's site. It's also 5x7 and just over a carat at 1.12. It's on sale right now for $1,200. If you add in the setting (an additional $360 because I looked it up), you're looking at a total of $1,560! I just wanted to show you that the one you're being offered is definitely a bargain. :D

I'm not trying to push you into it. Promise! I just wanted to show you what it would cost brand new (and with the stone on sale). :P2 I did kind of talk myself into it though. Care to share your source? Lol

$600 for an entire ring? Yeah, really good price but above all, no deal is a deal unless it's something you love in the first place.

The price of the ring is very fair. It should not be a problem to size but a call to a local goldsmith would answer that question.

The spinel has obvious extinction. Even if it is a good price, if the cutting will bother you, it isn't a good deal.

Woke up to more replies which is so great, it's great to hear all the different perspectives on a purchase. Thank you all so much.

I have wanted a spinel in this color but didn't really want to do another project so when I came across this it was pretty exciting! The diamonds are G/H SI and I am very partial to these daisy/floral inspired designs.

The extinction, I don't think it will bother me since I'm getting the color I want. Didn't have any doubt that the price was great but honestly wondered if the price was good for the spinel, since it does have the extinction going on.

Had to sleep on it but I think I'm going to go for it!

Elle, you know I saw that spinel you posted on LT last week and was so tempted but I just don't want a project! It was a beautiful stone though.

I can tell now that it is reserved and the sale is going forward that I found this ring on Etsy. You believe that? So just luck that I came across it I guess. Just a private seller who is selling off some of her jewelry and happened to have an Yvonne ring!

I'd love to know who the seller is.:D

I am glad you are buying it Steph. I think you will be very pleased when you see how a neon Mahenge performs.
