Planning an engagement. I just got a quote from a designer on a custom ring and its a little higher than what I had hoped for. The center stone I am currently looking at is around $9000 +- 300. My question is would you spend 5300 on custom platinum wedding set?

I cant decide it custom is worth it, yeah itll give me something I worked hard to create and plan and Id like it alot but, I can also like a catalog set for about $3500

You would need to provide more details and pictures of the setting for anyone to determine if they would pay $5300 for it.

It definitely depends on the type of setting it is and who is making it. It would have to be a master ring maker for me to pay that much. I'd like to see the picture as well.

It depends on the ring design. Can you show us a picture of what you are thinking?

I was more or less wondering if it was more or less OK to spend more than half the cost of my center stone on a setting? Kind of seems to me I should have a larger diamond for an such expensive setting

Heres what I wanted:

E - Ring
Metal - Platinum
Style - 3/4 eternity shared prong (http://www.whiteflash.com/gallery/diamond-engagement-rings/princess-cut-shared-prong-engagement-ring-12301.htm) with ACA melee
Width of band - 2.5 mm
Head - 6 prong basket, same style as picture (http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/etoile-du-couer-solitaire-engagement-ring-1562.htm) with two contact points (http://www.whiteflash.com/gallery/diamond-engagement-rings/custom-6-prong-diamond-engagement-ring-32101.htm) including the curved section under the center stone
Size - 7

Key Design Features
* Must allow matching wedding band to fit flush
* Would like the center stone some what low profile (not a great distance from the top of the center stone to the inner diameter of the band), seems that the 2 contacts points of the head make this possible, overall profile doesn't have to be extremely low to where the notch under center stone is extremely thin or the distance between the two contact points are far apart
* Head prongs thin, but sturdy, clawed
* Accommodate center stone that will be 1 - 1.25 carats
* Would like side stones to stop at the same position as on wedding band

Wedding Band
Metal - Platinum
Style - 3/4 eternity shared prong (this style) with ACA melee
Width - 2.5 mm
Size - 7

Key Design Features
* Fit flush to e-ring
* Would like side stones to stop at the same position as on e-ring

Anyone care to chime in? Is what Im getting for my money worth it.

Im planning on beginning the cad process this week, Does any one see things I should specify/clarify better or add in to my description?

Ah...I did not realize you were getting two rings, not one. Based on the breakdown and design shown, pricing looks reasonable, plus you are getting excellent quality melees.

See...if I had that total budget ($9,000 + $5,300 = $14.300)...I'd be inclined to get a bigger diamond. Actually, I was just thinking about that before I read your post. I think i am going to start a thread about this...where is that sweet spot??

I'm with BG....I'd go for a bigger stone, but that's just me and everyone is different. I'd put more budget into the stone and go with a simple setting that can maybe be changed later. However, you know your GF and if she loves these kind of detailed settings or prefers a diamond in the 1 carat range then definitely go for it. Especially with the way the price of metal can fluctuate...if you end up getting a setting like this made later on, you might end up paying a lot more. Sometimes you get a skewed view on PS since so many people are into the SIZE or suffer from a case of DSS
