Would you use a push backing on screw back diamond studs?

I purchased a beautiful pair of 1 ctw diamond studs in 14K w/g screw back settings. I am not in love with the screw backs. I tried placing a pair of white gold regular push backs on the posts and they seem super secure.

Is this a recipe for disaster -- should I just have them reset to push backs posts? It really feels like the push ons are on tight. Do people do this? What do you all think? I have googled all morning for opinions on this topic but no luck. Apologies if this is a repetitive question -- my board search didn't yield a response.

Thanks all.

I had screw back earrings at one point. Even though the thread was fine, they still hurt my earrings putting them in and taking them out. I had them reset. I recently bought ACA studs and just have regular posts with the regular butterfly backs. They feel secure and tight. Not sure how a regular back works over time with screw backs but if that setting works for you, why not just use the back that goes with them? Is it because of the time it takes to secure them?

I really hate screw backs although I recognize they are more secure. I have two pairs of screw back studs right now but I use silicone backs when I wear them. The silicone backs don’t damage the threads like I fear could happen if I jam on a butterfly back. And yet they are very secure because they grip the threads.

Yes, it is a pain and my dexterity is not what it used to be. I like to clean them daily.

Oh this sounds good. Did you buy the silicone from anyone in particular? Thanks for this tip!

I bought a large pack on amazon so it’s been a while since I ordered them. I can use them several times before the holes in the backs start to feel less grippy. I had picked up some before that were a hard silicone and I didn’t like those. You may be able to find them at WM or Claires...anywhere like that sells earring backs In their jewelry section...and if those stores are open where you live.

Thanks so much for the tip--found lots on Amazon so I will try those around the house and see how it goes.

I understand. I take mine out every day too for cleaning.

I also use the silicon backs from amazon

I may be in the minority here but I’m not a fan of screw backs and I actually lost a stud once due to screw back. Over time the grove wears down and if you are not careful you can lose an earring. From my experience, I will say, I should have had them professionally checked at least once or twice a year.

I have had many clients who have disliked screw backs and either went to the push on backs or the La Pousette type backs with a notched post that the backs lock into.

The biggest problem I see with the screw backs is that the posts are physically larger in diameter than the regular backs and the threads often irritate the ears when ratcheting into and out of the earlobe. If not regularly and carefully cleaned, those threads collect detritus which can cause infections of the earlobe as well.

@diamondsR4eVR has correctly stated that the screw backs are not the cure all that many claim. Over the last 40 years I have had only a few clients lose an earring, and screw backs are more often the ones lost than push backs.

Another one who dislike screw backs as the ones I have seen all have very long posts!

DK :))

I have actually lost a stud type earring once so far and in fact it was a screw back.

I am fully back to tight fitting pushbacks now

Thank you ALL for your thoughtful replies. Many moons ago, I had a pair of platinum screw back studs and one fell out at the airport. I ended up getting a new pair of studs at that time with hefty pushbacks and loved them. My current pair "fell into my lap" and arrived as screwbacks. Putting them on recently solidified my preference for hefty push. I think in the interim, I will buy the lovely silicone pair noted above however once the pandemic is over, I will probably get them reset into push.

You guys are the best!

I used regular push backs with screw posts for years. I actually liked that the threads on the post gripped the back and held them in place securely. I had no problems.

As Wink suggested, the use of the La Pousette style locking backs are very safe and secure while remaining very smooth and comfortable. I would definitely recommend such backs for diamonds 2ct each and up just because of the value issue.

In all cases, the use of medium to heavy weight friction posts and the same for the ear nuts, medium to heavy weight ones, would be my common recommendation. The screw threads tend to bother a lot of people and I don't see many losses of earrings when the posts and the friction ear nuts are not easily bent, light weight, ones. You pay only a bit more for a lot more security by using heavier, more durable, components. It is well worth a small added cost.

+1 dislike for screw back as it is pretty tough for day in day out
I prefer butterfly push back and silicone! it does feels a little safe and you can easily adjust to how tight you want it to be to your ear flap

I should add that the pushbacks can be gently adjusted. If the post starts to feel like it is going on and off to easily, simply use a pair of pliers to very gently tighten the backs. Be gentle, as it is easy to overtighten and thus ruin your pushback.
