Platinum is the metal of choice for setting diamonds.

Platinum is more expensive and shows scratches more over time.....those are the cons. The pros are its durability and that it best shows off better-colored diamonds.
White gold cons - not as durable as platinum and may lose rhodium finish, as Brian pointed out. The pros.....more affordable, doesn't show scratching as much as platinum and again shows off better-colored diamonds.
My only point is that there is no *ONE* choice for setting diamonds. Platinum may be considered the best choice by jewelers, but that doesn't make it my preference to wear. I think preference figures pretty heavily into the equation myself. Just my .02 cents.
