you can also do a provisional ballot....at least here in california you can. just go to the polling place and ask your friendly poll worker. you can also register right then and there if not already registered and fill out a provisional ballot.

Yes, keep in mind they WANT you to vote. At the very least, our''s gets excited because it''s a direct reflection on their one women office. I''m unsure if we have polling places in VA prior to Tuesday. Our Resigtra handles all the absentee & voting in place ballots.

i volunteer as a poll worker. its a long day...we start at 6a to set up and be ready for the 7a opening of the poll place and through til 8p when the poll closes. then we have to tear down what we set up and tally the votes. and one can only participate in this after having completed a 1.5 hour training before each and every election.

yes, please come vote!!!! the system is only as good as those that participate.

One cannot do that in Connecticut! When I was in graduate school I always worked at the polls on Election Day. (One makes a few dollars!) There were no "provisional" ballots and the deadline for voter registration and absentee ballots was weeks before Election Day.

i didn't say your vote would be counted....it may or may not when you vote provisionally. but even if you're not registered, you can come to your polling place, register right there and vote provisionally. we also will accept your absentee ballots. all require extra paperwork and signatures but all is done in compliance with law. you can also call the county elections office after election day to see if your provisional ballot was counted or not and, if not, why not....if you don't like the answer you can file suit against the county....probably won't win, though, as everything is done according to law. provisional ballots are a result of FEDERAL law and are meant to encourage people to vote.

did you also know that you can only be given three ballots? if you 'soil' the first one and need to get another to correct your mistake, you may do so. if you mismark your 2nd ballot you may still get a 3rd. but if i hand you a 3rd ballot i have to tell you this is the last ballot you can have and if you mismark that 3rd ballot, you're out. no more ballots....unless you throw a fit and then we do the appropriate paperwork and i give you a provisional....and i make notes why you got the provisional and your vote will not be counted. all very legal in a court of law.

ETA: i get a grand total of $80 dollars for training time and being there the day of the election....i actually take the $$$ and then donate it to one of my favorite political organizations that may or may not be tax deductible!

Deb, let your fingers do the walking. I''ve been voting on location for years. My vote counts as an absentee.

I''m curious as "provisional voting" has become an issue of late w/ the close elections. Do they count or not?

too many complications for me to keep straight and the final arbitrator is the elections office.

the only problem we have in santa cruz county are meeting criteria re keeping walkways clear of leaves for handicap assessibility. we''re a coastal, mountain county with lots of redwoods and fog. not easy to convince the feds that we can''t control leaves, dropping branches, and moisture on the paths due to fog. however, there are procedures set in place that allow us to take everything out to the car for said person and they can vote there.

ps its been rewarding on occassion: 1-a couple came in and it was his first time he could vote since becoming a citizen....he brought a camera to commenmorate the event..he was so pleased and so proud! and another group came in as a family to vote...there were 4 generations represented...they had waited until all could come in together...it was a wonderful right of passage for the youngest! its these moments that make me proud to be an American and participating in local democracy. and it is why i can''t understand how any group can advocate illegal blocking of voting and how anyone can not come out and vote.

its getting scary, f&i....the more conversation that goes on, the more we have in common..........send me a private e-mail, please, and let me know how you''ve been participating with your local election. i''m interested no matter what party you''re candidate is representing.
