So I've been looking around for medium blue saturated sapphires, and recently I got this beautiful medium blue sapphire from Gene, and for a beautiful price too because of some inclusions. Also, it doesn't shift color in my workplace's fluorescent lights! This is weirdly important to me -- I have several other sapphires that have a distinct purply shift in my work lights (which are super crappy). I don't know why it bothers me so much; most other people wouldn't even notice, I expect, or would count it as a plus! But anyway, this one stays blue, yay.
Here are some pics.
Here you can see the black inclusions that he mentioned in his listing, at about 2 o'clock and 3 o'clock.
Okay, so, I almost returned this sapphire. In certain lighting, as you can see in this pic (large milky splotch near the center, about 4 o'clock), I think strong sidelighting will do it, there's this cloud that sort of lights up and overpowers the stone. I think the light must have to scatter off it in a particular way, as it's not at all visible when the light falls on the stone. I corresponded with Gene about it and I don't think he had even realized it would affect the stone's face-up appearance (it only does in these side-lighting situations). So I was all ready to box it up and send it back. Then, right before I boxed it up, I took it outside,
...and saw this. And emailed Gene back saying I was going to keep it. Fortunately he is a very nice man and did not take offense at my wiffle waffling (or if he did, he didn't tell me so
)
I actually like inclusions most of the time -- I think they give a stone character -- I just had to get used to these, since I wasn't expecting the "cloud" inclusion.
