The setting style of a ring refers to how the stones are secured. Setting styles for center stones include prong set, bezel set, tension set and burnished set.
The most popular prong setting styles are four-prong and six-prong, though eight-prong and ten-prong styles can be found. Prong shape can vary according to design. Some interesting prong shapes include heart shape prongs and “fishtail” prongs. Another style is the split claw prong aka double claw prong. Certain fancy shape diamonds like princess, marquise, hearts, and pear cuts may need extra protective prongs (V-Prongs), because of their pointed corners.
Click on the links below for examples of prong settings shared by Pricescope community members.
Four Prong settings allow more of the diamond to be visible, but these settings leave more of the girdle area exposed. Secure 4-Prong settings are generally safe, and some prefer the extra visibility.

Six Prong settings are very secure and enhance the shape of round brilliant cut diamonds. The Tiffany classic 6-prong has been popular since its creation in 1886. There are many interpretations of this design, and the majority of vendors carry a version of this classic.

While not as common, Eight Prong and Ten Prong settings provide a secure and unique alternative to the traditional prong setting style. They enhance the look of antique style mountings and can also be found in true antique and vintage engagement rings.

Fishtail shaped prongs are often found in vintage and antique jewelry and reproductions. Fishtail prongs tend to square the shape of round brilliant cut diamonds, while giving the illusion of a larger center stone.
