18 Year old in 9th grade??

The boys were probably seniors in high school while the girl was a freshman.

No, despite his age, he was placed in the 9th grade.

I find it interesting that the left pushes for more & more gun control, preaching the mantra "if we can save just one child ...", but when it comes to illegal immigrants, citizens' lives/safety don't seem to matter as much.

If I remember correctly, public high schools allow students up through age 21. I'm a bit vague on the specifics because I read it probably 10 years ago while looking for something else.

Even ignoring which grade they place into, this seems like a potentially dangerous thing. Bathrooms, locker rooms, cafeterias, etc are all shared. So you can have a 12 year old (skipped a grade) student, a 21 year old student, and a 22 year old teacher.
Just seems not healthy...

WHERE in the article does it say they were in the country illegally? WTF??? You read their last names and just ASSUMED it? Jesus H..........

It's been widely reported in other news stories I've read that at least one for sure is here illegally, and was previously detained by ICE in Texas. You just read my post, and ASSUMED I was being discriminatory?

As officials reported that one of two students charged with raping a 14-year-old girl in a Maryland high school bathroom entered the United States illegally, the crime became part of a national debate on immigration.

Leave Jesus out of it; it's not his fault.

I was quoting DF, but haven't got the hang of the new platform LOL!

And I said Jesus H, and you assumed I meant THAT Jesus.:lol::lol::lol:

I didn't assume you meant that Jesus; I didn't read of any 'Jesus' involved in this crime. :naughty:

But yes, there is widespread coverage of the illegal status of one or both of the perps. I hope people don't just take what is posted on here as their sole news source.

I know. I was kidding about the Jesus thing. I'm glad we can joke about it.

Most like b/c english is his second language. This was a common practice when we first immigrated to the U.S. . some schools would place new immigrants one grade lower than their age, but an 18 yr. old with 14 yr. old students is unheard of...

First time posting under change. Let's see if I can do it.
18 and 14 year-olds have always been together in class, not usually in the main academic classes, but in other classes.

While I agree this is true, this particular 18 year old would be 22 upon graduation from high school if his advancement is the same as other people in the school. I do have a problem with that. Now he can get a GED while serving time if convicted and then be deported.

Usually older students are fast tracked because they are likely to drop out otherwise.
Whether the rapists were labeled freshmen or otherwise, I'm not sure the victim would have been safe from them, unless it was just a 9th grade campus.

Seems like people this age should go into adult continuing education where they can learn English as a second language. I dont think we should be having up to 21 year olds in HS. That is just too much
of a span (14-21) IMO.

Yes 21. Obviously I don't math well in the morning.

I don't know if this have changed drastically since I was in High School but way back when there were certain classes that need to be taken before a student could graduate. It was not unheard of for a student to wait until they were a Senior to take some of these classes. I wanted to get them out of the way and took one during what could have been used as study hall. I was a freshman and their were a few seniors in the class. They older students still graduated with their peers.

Of course we don't hear much from the left wing media about this story..:wall:

I don't see the problem with the age in the class? Obviously the crime is a problem, but just re: age - so what? This could easily have happened to a girl their same age - that the girl was 14 seems pretty incidental. Even if he failed like four times and was held back - I mean, one should be in school according to one's learning level, NOT according to one's age, and if that means 22-year-old HS seniors, then that means 22-year-old HS seniors. Many of the people who would not be suitable to advance in grades would also probably not be able to complete their GED on their own. I think it is also good for students to see other students failing and being held back, because that will hopefully increase their desire to succeed. Idk, I have heard too many stories from my teacher friends whose school districts don't allow them to fail students even when they have no grasp on the material, and I think if more students were allowed to fail and be held back, which would necessarily mean older kids in more classes with younger kids, education as a whole might be able to improve.

Disagree. At a certain age these now adults should age out of the school system. It is then up to them to take adult education classes.

I do agree that children need to meet all the criteria of the grade before they are promoted. But at a certain point, it also needs to be seen that this type of schooling is not working and the now adult needs to take another course of action to complete his education.

People do age out of the school system. Here is a chart showing the states and max ages they can qualify to be in public schools.

NOTE: anyone receiving special education services is eligible to stay in school until 21 regardless of "grade" in order to continue receiving services, job training, etc.

I think the difference is between what is allowed and what is appropriate. Someone who is legal drinking age is not appropriate to be in school with 14-17 year old kids. Adult education is a far better setting for everyone in that case. JMHO.

Interesting map, thank you.

That is the way it used to work in our area.
