Have you looked at Richard Homer stones? I haven't seen an ugly one on his website. Concavegems.com

If you don't like concave cuts he will cut you a stone. I had him cut a rare seafoam blue peridot for me. Gorgeous, museum piece.
Not really into concave stones from what I've seen... but I will keep him in mind for a custom cut. Maybe I'll contact him to see what kind of rough he might have. Thank you!!

Means a lot coming from you! I've been admiring your wife's beautiful ring from afar for months now. Quite the spectacle! :appl:

I'm back on the huge screen and can see things more clearly now. Lin, the Cambodian sapphire has quite a bit of silk. Perhaps it isn't noticeable in person, but I can see it in your pictures. Take a good look at it when tilted a little to make sure it's not colour zoning. Other than that, I can't wait for the video.

It definitely has that velvety feel. I guess that's the silk we're talking about. It was somewhat dark, but despite that it seemed the cut was good and I didn't see any windows/tilt windows. A little silk is desirable, but how can you tell if there's too much?

What exactly am I looking for when tilting it? I think I understand zoning, but I guess I'm unsure as to how it relates to silk.

Hopefully I'll hear back from the gem guy there and he'll bring in a few others for us to look at. And maybe I'll get a video this weekend!!

I like it when the silk gives it the velvety look but it cannot be so great as to make it translucent or intefere with the sparkle / brilliance. I see quite a lot of striping from the top down view, which made me wonder if that is the silk or if that is zoning. It is easier to determine that when tilting the stone a little.

Here's an example: In the vendor's magnified picture, it looks silky. When I look at it in person, I don't see the silk at all, yet the stone is very transparent and sparkles like crazy. It appears velvety without striping. For me personally, this stone has just the right amount of silk where it enhances the overall look without affecting light performance.

I see that stripey-ness in the stone I posted now that you mention it. And wowza, that's a beautiful sapphire you have there!!! [Edit: okay would you consider this a medium blue? And mine medium-dark??]

I agree also about the brilliance/translucency. It has to have that perfect balance of silkyness and sparkliness! I guess too much silk and it looks too opaque/dull?

I only saw the stone in a pretty flat fluorescent lighting situation. If I remember correctly, it had some pretty sparkly flashes. Let's hope I can make it back there before someone buys it so I can snag a video!

Thanks. I think I got lucky with that unheated sapphire from eBay for only $300. I consider it a medium light to medium toned stone. Depending on the light source, the one you looked at is somewhere between medium dark and dark. Yes, too much silk and the stone looks dull. Fluorescent lighting is the worst condition so it should look nicer outdoors. Do check that out too.
