Greetings wise and knowledgeable PSers! Since becoming a member here I have learned a lot about these little shiny things I love so much and appreciate all the sharing.

I took some pics of a necklace my mom wears, in hopes that I may learn a little more about the cut. I don't have specs besides "It's around 3.5cts, maybe an L?" lol on that but who cares, we love it regardless.

Any feedback on the cut? She had a jeweler try to talk her into cutting it into a MRB a while back...he said "you'll only lose about a carat" aaaaand all it's character! That guy also said he thought it was 100 years old.

So I showed her some pics of an OEC and we agreed it was very similar but I've always called it a cushion. I've got a lot of reading to do re: different cuts and types of cushions (antique vs. modern) but I thought I would share pics and gather the knowledge of the group as well!

When I **someday** get a new shiny (yes that's my wicked ebay setting and princess cut wedding ring in the pics...hello 90's!) I would love to have a chunky, pastel throwing, warmer colored cushion too :)

Thanks in advance and excuse my junk photo skills!

I'm so glad your mother didn't listen to that jeweler! I'm not an expert, but it looks like an old mine cut to me because of the cushion shape, the faceting, and the somewhat rustic look. It is a beautiful stone!

One more straggler pic.

And I now realize that I should've tried to get a profile pic (let's see if she trusts me one more time to give it back after handing it to me again for a side shot!)

And thank you Junebug, I think it's beautiful too (but I'm biased as I have pics of each one of my kids grasping it as tiny babies and I'd say "that's a good baby...you get that for Mom!" It's been around a while and just gets better with age it feels like :)

I don't know either but what a beautiful, wonky, old stone! I wonder how much of the color is because of the YG setting? I think it would be whiter in a platinum or even, yum, a rose gold one.
Thanks for sharing! :)

Looks like an old mine cut! And 3+ carats!!! I'm so glad she didn't recut it. Next time you see it, can you measure it?

Looks more like an OMC to me.

Looks to be a beautiful OMC/Antique Cushion to me! Antique Cushions and OMC's in this size have become so hard to find that this diamond is very special indeed!

Looks to me like an Old Mine Cushion/ Old Mine Brilliant.

Re: 3+ct cushion...what type? OEC?

Thank you all for the replies (and compliments)! Gypsy & Erica & Chrono: I need to do some research into Old Mine Cut or Old Mine Cushion to figure out what is the difference between that and Old European Cut and Antique Cushion!

Forte: I'll report back w any insurance appraisals or other paper work filed away that may have measurements.

LOL that Anne said "wonky", my family's favy word lately! The culet being so off center in these pics (I never really noticed in real life) and the outline of it definitely helps qualify it as such :) and yes, maybe the yellow gold setting is contributing to the yellow warmth of it...I wonder if she could amp that up with one of those gold cup settings as everyone in my family is a little "colored diamond crazy" right now (ok maybe that's just me :cheeky: ) and my mom could be talked into a little more "modern" of a setting (but one that still fits with the character of that diamond).

Again thank you for the compliments!
