3 prong basket setting for studs?

When will you get them back? Hoping that you really love them and that they are comfortable for you. Of course we want photos!

2-3 weeks (this photo is white gold and they will be special ordering platinum). I will post photos, but I will wait till my April bday to really wear them!

I really hope the jeweler can make those prongs very delicate. I was assured that he could. However, we also talked about creating a three prong martini that had a flatter bottom, not so pointy. She said that was totally possible. Maybe I should call back and talk with the person planning to do the work just to make sure my ideas are conveyed. And a three prong martini without that pointy part going into the piercing actually sounds lovely.

I had setting like that for the stones currently in the 8 prong yellow gold settings. Here are (quick) photos of one of the empty settings.

I changed them up after I got the WF 8 prong martinis since I liked them so much, but these 3 prong with the flatter bottom worked better for me than the typical 3 prong with the pointy bottom. So they may work for you if you don't want the 8 prong.

Thanks for sending that picture. I feel like I saw something like that here on PS at some point but couldn't find it again. So helpful! I'm sure that would be more comfortable than the traditional three prong martini. I feel nearly decided on the eight prong martini but I think one of my concerns is that the eight prongs might make the stone look too big. And I wonder if the three prong would minimize the Bling just enough so that I would feel comfortable with daily wear. I was also a little bit surprised by how much the eight prongs covered up the bottom of the diamond IRL, which probably doesn't matter because people are only really seeing the top. (?)

These will look great.

Update here!

I ended up getting slightly bigger stones than I had planned on. They are .68 carats each, so 1.36tcw. They are sparkly and amazing, but that's another thread;-)

Right now my plan is to go with eight prong martini setting. I really want them to sit low and snug to my ears, but still be super comfortable. I was concerned it would be too much metal but after looking through all the posts it seems like most everybody's very happy with this setting.

Again, planning for these to be my everyday studs. University teaching, running, camping, schlepping kids all over the place, gardening, baking, Swimming – (not my intention but it happens). I'm just the kind of person who wants to put earrings in and enjoy looking pretty without having to think about it too much.

Questions:

1) Any additional thoughts I should consider with an eight prong setting?

2) Should I start a separate thread about secure and hypoallergenic backings that are not screw?

Thanks so much. You have already been so helpful.

I am not much help with the setting since I have bezel set studs but jumbo backs are the way to go.

if the prongs are tapered enough, they shouldn't add much to the appearance of size. I don't think I noticed any real difference when moving from the 3 prong to the 8. Those stones are about 1.75 tcw, But if you're concerned, maybe go to the 3 prong???

Did the three prong that you sent the picture of project from the earlobe too much? Or did it sit as flat as the eight prong? I really love the look of flat against the ear, but with sensitive lobes can't do traditional martini.

It's been years so I won't swear to this being accurate, but the main reason I changed was that I liked the look of the 8 prong better, as a setting. I don't recall not liking the way the 3 prong sat on the ear. And if it sat too high, I know I would have not liked it at all. That's about all I can tell you. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

You have been so helpful! I have good info to consider!! Much apprciated.

@josieKat
I'm so glad you chimed in! Ever since @Lookinagain mentioned your 8-prongs, I've been reading your posts to see if you had any photos of them in your ears! I didn't find them, but I learned that we have a lot in common professionally (I'm also a university prof!) and in terms of hobbies (also into camping)! :) I find it oddly reassuring that we might also gravitate toward the same settings.

Curious about why you might switch to 3 prongs. And, martini or basket?

I’m so sorry I’ve been MIA! Interesting times these days, especially on university campuses.

Here are a couple of poorly taken shots one angle so you can see the curve of the prongs.

I still love the comfort of the setting but this pair (vs my first .6 ctw) the prongs aren’t as refined. I do like how yellow gold looks with my red/gold and silvering hair but I thought I might try platinum 3 prongs for a disappearing effect if I ever get to upgrade. (I can’t do white gold in my ears.) Not sure Whiteflash will ever get natural 1 ctw pairs in though!IMG_7682.jpegIMG_7690.jpeg

Interesting times indeed! Our faculty meeting ran well over the time, and we didn't get to half of the agenda. Seems like there's just a lot to address right now.

Anyway, thanks so much for the photos! These are absolutely perfect, especially paired with those gold hoops. I wish my second hole hadn't closed up.

I'm glad to hear they're very comfortable. Because at the end of the day, that's going to be the most important for me. That and the fact that they are so snug against your lobe – that is what I'm going for.

I expect a call from the jeweler any day! I will definitely try them on and get pictures for everyone but I'm going to wait until my actual birthday in April until I think of them as truly mine!

Thanks for taking the time to chime in @josieKat ☺️

Hi again! Update- I picked them up at the jeweler today! What do you think? They look a lot bigger than I expected! I hope I like them for everyday use... I am told I will get used to the size!IMG_4536.jpegIMG_4546.jpegIMG_4548.jpegIMG_4531.jpegIMG_4534.jpeg

They look very nice! Nothing to worry about IMO!

Very nice. I love the prongs for earrings.

I think they look perfect. Not too big and not too small. Great for everyday wear. And it looks like they fit nicely against your ear lobe. Are you happy with them? And yes, I think you will get used to the size.

@Lookinagain Thanks!! I think I am happy with them. They sit snug tonyhe lobe. The only thing I am a little bummed about idc

@Lookinagain Thanks!! They do sit snug to my lobe. I would say I am mostly happy, but when I look in the mirror, or am facing someone straight on, I don't love how much platinum shows. I kinda knew that going into this, ya know, 8 prongs is a lot of metal! But that is my only gripe. Although 3prong martini would have been less metal, I still think martini would have been uncomfortable in the piercing. Here is a photo of the straight-on view with more metal than I love:IMG_4541.jpeg

I see. That’s the prongs protruding up beyond the girdle of the diamond. It’s an easy fix to shave them down for a skilled jeweler though since they didn’t do that the first time I’m not sure I’d trust the people who set them the first time to do that.

I was going to suggest the same thing. It's all in the way they shaped the prongs. Find a jeweler who can shave them down a bit more for you, perhaps make them into claw prongs?

oh dear! Thank you for noticing that. Is there any image I can look at where an eight prong is set more appropriately? I think that would be helpful for me.

OK so I would ask my jeweler to shave the prongs down a bit and make them more like a claw prongs, and also reposition the diamond so that it is below the girdle? I'm just trying to get the language right because I'm definitely no expert! Thanks for your advice. I appreciate it.

No no don’t try to direct them especially not like that lol

Just find a picture of prongs you like and say you want your shaped like the image so they hug the diamond more rather than protruding up so much. The number of prongs doesn’t matter so a picture of 3 or 4 prongs you like is fine.

Here's the White Flash 6 prong martini.

Here's the White Flash 6 prong martini.

That's helpful, thanks. I had sent the jeweler these 2 photos as examples when I initiated the project: image (1).pngimage.png

Since I'm clearly new to all of this (I had to look up what you meant by girdle, lol:shhh:), and I also am out of budget (plus I am rural, so we haven't many jewelers around here!), I am planning to bring them back to the same place (everyone loves them!) and see if they might be able to tweak the setting. I just want to make sure I explain my issue clearly. They currently have my wedding band and e-ring for re-sizing, so I will see them again soon. I hope they will be kind enough to make this right for me without an extra fee.

So what you are seeing is that the top of the diamond is kind of level with the prongs and it should be up higher? Is that correct?

And when you say shave down the prongs does that mean just make the prongs skinnier? I suppose it must!

I am attaching a few pictures of the studs here.

If this is something that can be fixed so that less metal is visible when somebody's looking at my face, that would be awesome! I just wanna be able to communicate it clearly.

@Lookinagain and @Dreamer_D

Thanks for your advice above. I need a lot of hand-holding!!

Here are a couple more shots from the side. I really like the setting face on, but what I am hearing is that the prongs need to be lower, closer to the girdle and further from the table? Would that correct the "too much metal" look that I don't like when looking in the mirror (side view of earring, I guess)? So is it that the prongs need to be moved, or what? If I ask for them to be shaved down, will that make sense?

I live in a somewhat rural area, and I'm at the end of my earring budget. So, I am planning to go back to the shop that set them and see if they can do something to improve the look. Fingers crossed.

And, do you think it is fair for me to ask for this to be corrected?

IMG_4913.jpegIMG_4913 (1).jpeg

They look pretty good to me in those shots. I don’t see much room for improvement TBH.
