hi Admitted newbie here ... have a problem i have a beautiful setting for a rectangular stone... size is optional on this one .. but my problem is that the setting requires `14 4 mm round stones to be set around the outside of teh larger stone ... everybody has 1 ct +++ stones for sale but i can''t find any of the smaller type (aquamarine or garnet is my need for this one).

Please if you can help with a possible source for this one it would be appreciated.

I was going to deal with alphaimports but there was a posting that warned off of them.

It should be easy for you to find 4mm round garnets. They are really affordable too. I think you should find the for less than $10-15 total.

ETA: wait I am rereading the post and am a bit confused. Are you looking for an under 1ct center stone in aqua or garnet or are you looking for side stones or both???????

hi Ilovesparkles:

What I.m looking for are 14 4 mm Aquamarines and 14 4mm Garnets.

I have 2 lovely, bright and intelligent grand daughters and am trying to put together a ring for each. I was a cutter back in the 70''s (1970''s not 1870''s)

and all my silver work was done by my next door nieghbour who was a bench jeweller. He taught me the basics in silversmithing.

Now I have the time and energy to pick up where I left off. I am surprised at 2 things how available the tools have become and how prices have increased [$$)]

Anyway thanks to all those who have replied to my plea for help. I will certainly look at the sources mentioned,

Hi JW.
You could try a search for calibrated size stones.
I think multi-color. com has some things like you are looking for. You could also try jewelry television (jtv.com) They some times have these parcels.
There is no telling what kind of cutting you will get from the suggestion though. jtv is in the U.S. so returning is no problem. good luck on your search. cmw

Here''s a site that offers calibrated stones -- both aqua and garnets -- in the size you''re looking for. I have to admit that although I peruse this site a lot to learn about different gemstones, check prices, and just drool... I''ve never purchased from them (yet).

Lucky granddaughters to be able to wear rings their grandfather made just for them! It''s hard to imagine a more wonderful ring.

Hello jewelledwolf! Looks like some smart person already recommended gemhut-great place for small calibrated stones.

Best of luck with your bench jewellery-making endeavors! Frankly, the whole process is fascinating-I would LOVE to hear about your progress and see some of your finished products. Either here at pricescope, or if you start a blog, please keep us up-to-date with your jewellery making!!!!

Your grand-daughters will love whatever you make-what heirlooms!

4mm...

Care for spinel?

Pink and red at GemCal and GemsOfEarth . The sets of small calibrated fancy cuts look tempting enough - and there seems to be more available than the listings (click on one for the relevant text).

Hi val looked at the spinels nice goods.

Can''t beblieve the number of ppl that are looking at this thread.

Anyway in case any of them are looking for 4mm stones too I am going to add one source that I found http://www.creativegem.com/index.htm They have 72 pages of essentially small stones. If you wish to get a feeling for what a "Sight Holder" has to deal with take a look at the wholesale section of this website (72 pages). almost all "packages" or "lots" have a mix of really nice stones and a percentage of not so nice stones. (pay top dollar for less then top dollar stones, same as a sight holder.
Chuckle ... oh well makes it easier to get rid of some of the "less than perfect goods".

Same as potatoes! Wonder if the bads go to waste down the distribution chain. Sadly... it doesn''t look like much ever does...

I remember of Creativegem for their supply of decorative stones (green and white non-precious opal of Macedonia a Turkey, and what not).

hi valeria:

I have a friend who is a "designer" .. "wax carver" .. etc ..etc.. and runs a full service jewellery shop. I asked him the other day what happened to the "less than perfect goods" you see on the net .... his answer made me stop and think ...

He said "there has to be an affordable ring... pendant .. braclet etc. that a teenage boy can buy to win the heart of his love" Guess the quality isn''t as important as the thought sometimes

I think I might have been a little hard on creative gems .. the less than "perfect goods"
were SI slight inclusions ... I''ve always considered that as something "a man on a galloping horse " would never notice, besides those stones will make some young girls heart flip on her birthday when Johnnie gives her her present.

hi ilovesparkles:

Actually neighbor died about a 10 years ago. So yes i will be doing the settings and the setting.

Granpa is entering second childhood and has decided he is gonna do what makes him happy.

Dragged out dusty old skills and made my self a jewllery work bench (pretty lil thing that it is)

and gonna practice at being a bench jeweller.

I''ll be working in Sterling for the most part except for a few pieces in 14k. I''ll be buying the Gems i use cause its easier than trying to chase down rough (bin there, done that, before they invented the teeshirt)

Actually Son, Son''s Wife, and two granddaughters are going to be the first to get to ''harvest'' granpa''s benchwork. Son says he''s looking forward to it ''he doesn''t mind being Dad''s ''lab rat''
lol ... says it always pays off in the end

I''ve found some 4mm ''gems'' but for the most part they are very dark in colour and over priced ($10 each)

That sounds so exciting! Best of luck to you and I am sure your grand daughters will be just thrilled! It would be cool if you could show pictures as you go along and make progress!
