6.77 carat pink tourmaline from Jeff White

I am not sure what to think at the moment Acinom. I will probably receive the stone by the end of next week. It sort of bothers me that I post my stone and Jeff gets a flood of emails about it. Makes me uncertain if I wish to post more on the forum about it. I think the lurkers are souring my feelings. Maybe I will get over it...

What exactly is souring your feelings SapphireStyle? Is it the fact that the lurkers are not open and upfront about it and that they do not post here that they love the stone a lot?
The fact that quite some people love it means that Jeff can take the stone back easily if you do not want to keep it. It also means that in essence there is nothing wrong with the stone: it shows that taste varies.
You do have to be sure though if you decide to send it back as apparantly there is a waiting list...
Take your time to review the stone as it is yours if you want to.

You were bothered from the beginning by the lurking behaviour.Try to wipe it off. Perhaps the lurkers are not active posters but... Lurkers and that could be the reason why they do not openly declare that they love the stone? Big hug for you!!

I hope you are pleasantly surprised by it and love it.

Does it bother you that folks are trying to buy it instead of talking you into it? Or perhaps that someone that someone who is talking you out of it might be trying to buy it? I would hope the latter isn't the case.

Regardless, be sure to keep it only if you love it. I had to learn not to second guess my taste/opinion based on others wanting - ended up with a few stones I later regretted buying - they just weren't for me. Returning is always easier for me when I know the seller can sell it right away. I haven't learned to return stones without some guilt yet. At least it was clear that it was already coming your way.

I personally like the stone if it doesn't go too dark...but purple-pinks work for me as opposed to peachy-pinks. (And no, I am not in the market for it  )

Since Jeff has already agreed to take it back if it does not suit, then take your time and decide if you like it or not.

If you don't, there are others who do, and it will go to a home where it will be appreciated.

At the end of the day, you have to like it, regardless of others' opinions and preferences.

DK :))

Other people will not brother me no matter what, we all have different tastes and follow the different rules to do things. I am pretty sure you will find the ONE with Jeff. Big hug and good luck.

Thanks All. I do appreciate all of you taking the time to comment. I don't know exactly what is bothering me about it all. Perhaps I am just grumpy. I expect it will pass.

He may also be telling you that because he wants you to keep it. There's a psychological effect on people knowing they have something that everyone else wants. A lot of vendors use this tactic, and the home shopping channels are notorious for it, LOL! I'm not saying Jeff isn't honest, but he may be telling you that in order for you to "want" the stone. Think about it this way, would you really want it as much if no one else wanted it, or just one other person?

What matters is not if 1 or 1,000,000 people want the stone. Do you think YOU will want it, and will YOU be happy with it. Look at the stone objectively, and forget about the lurkers. I've returned stones that others swooped up in a heart beat. I never regretted any return, and I actually felt bad for the person who bought what I returned. I have felt way MORE regret not returning things that I didn't want because I could have used those funds for something else.

Agree with the above 100%.

I wouldn't worry about it. And I also agree with TL in that you have to be objective and decide if you want and like this stone when you get it.

It really doesn't matter what someone lurking sees and wants. I'm pretty sure its happened to me as well (can't care though...lol)

This may trip a lot of triggers for people, who knows? But at the moment you can't really care about that, your feelings and your thoughts are what matters most. And if you send it back because it doesn't suit, then sure, it will likely go to someone else. Thats the reality of the whole thing.

I wouldn't let that bother you or keep you from sharing things. I share things all the time, at times hoping someone else buys it so I don't have to

If I'm serious enough about a purchase, yes, I play things closer to the chest until I've paid for it, THEN I share it, because at that point, its mine unless I return it. Nanana googoo, stick your head in booboo  . That happens all over pricescope (hell all over the internet to be honest!) so don't let it spoil things for you.

Yeah, basically people emailing JW about this tourmaline are asking to be put on a waiting list, should you choose return the stone - not sure why the fact that other people would be willing to purchase this stone bothers you? This practice is quite common in the colored gemstone world, particularly when it comes to precision-cut stones - I'm fairly sure when Gene, Barry, and Brad do their respective gemstone drops, even when a stone is marked "sold" or "reserved," people also email them to indicate their interest in the stone and to request to put on a waiting list should the stone be returned/purchase not go through.

Take your time to inspect the stone, evaluate it against your specific prereqs, and make your decision according to your own metric - for my own self, in my evaluation process I always include answering the question: "Would I be regretful of returning it if I saw someone else with it?" I do always assume someone else will buy it should I choose to return any gemstone... and with the whole "people vary" thing, that's more than okay with me (plus, I really want these vendors to stay in business).

I hope this stone lives up to your expectations! - a Jeff White custom gemstone experience is always a wonderful adventure, and I do appreciate your taking us PSers along on your journey. I look forward to your reactions once you receive the stone.

There are many of us who would likely pass on this stone due to its lack of saturation despite its being cut by JW. I highly doubt that Jeff is saying others are interested in purchasing the stone as a sales tactic; just not his style. What I will say is that some people like that color, some people want a JW stone, some people collect tourmalines in every hue and maybe this particular one is missing from their collection.

Only you know why it bothers you that others have contacted Jeff with an interest in his stone and only you will know whether you really love the stone when you get it. I often feel bad returning stones and to know others have expressed interest would make me happy and relieved.

I think others wanting something while I am still contemplating makes me feel additional stress about my decision. I felt this when I picked up handbag at Nordstrom's at their semi-annual sale. A lady came up to me and asked if I was buying it, and I said yes. Then she kept on following me around (from a distance) until I purchased it.

I think Preg nailed how I am feeling - additional stress. I don't want to make too much of it though. I will await the stone, see how I feel about it and return it if I am not in love with it. I am lucky enough to have two JW stones already that I love, and my garnet will make three. One tourmaline more or less is not going to shake my world.

Thanks again everyone who took the time to post and give me advice.

Thanks Sparklieslover! That's the kind of post that makes being part of PS a joy!

The tourmaline arrived today. It is huge and beautifully cut. It is, however, quite purple. Haven't made up my mind yet. I know lots are curious about the stone, so here is a shot I took in my office:

Saw your post about the garnet: what an amazing stone

What's your reflection on the tourmaline in real life?

Edit: ah, we must have posted simultaneously 8-)
Take your time to think about the tourmaline. Personally I think it's amazing with those purple flashes.

Makes me wish I emailed Jeff to get in line of you decided to pass (KIDDING).

Seriously, I love it - fond of purple/pink stones so this to me is a great combination. But again, you need to love it.

Thanks for the pic of the stone. I'd say the pic resembles very closely to one of Jeff's pics in terms of capturing the colour (I am hopeless at it myself).

DK :))

Oh wow it's huge! I also love the colour. Take your time to decide! I'm excited to see your projects unfold!

Well, its pretty and very well cut, but I'd still rather buy a rhodolite. Like one of those red spinels that look like orangey red garnet. Tourmaline is quite expensive while garnet is still affordable. On the other hand, its not so easy finding a rhodolite that looks really good under artificial light. Here is a large one, just as an example: http://www.thegemtrader.com/Mar%2011%20RhodoliteII%20Page.htm

Just my opinion of course. I agree with the others to take your time.

I think it look gorgeous! Take your time deciding but ultimately it must be perfect in your eyes.

I didnt contact him, but i love it   :o id take it in a second

For me, I like this shade of purple so it would be an easy decision but in your case, this is not the colour you are looking for. Take your time to think over it. Do not let the idea of others wanting this stone pressure you into a hasty decision. What they want isn't necessarily what you want. What you want isn't necessarily what others want.
