Hi,
I'm new to the forum and have really enjoyed reading all of the great information here. My wife and I are designing a ring and she has decided on a bezel halo setting with a round vivid blue sapphire as center stone.
I wanted to ask the forum members if anyone could help me track down this stone. I've read the trusted vendors topic, and there are just so many sites it is a little overwhelming.
Could anyone point me in the right direction of a good vendor, help me sort through that list. Or have a good connection for such a stone?
Thanks a lot!

Here's a link to a stunning unheated one...http://www.etsy.com/listing/121274181/grs-certified-royal-blue-natural?ref=shop_home_active I would attach a picture, but I can't from this computer/network.

$6700.00
Weight : 2.61 Carat
Size : 7.77 x 7.74 x 5.38 mm
Color : Vivid Royal Blue
Clarity : Loupe Clean
Treatment : Natural , No treatment at all.
Origin : Madagascar

You didn't specify your budget, which would be helpful.

Check out Gemfix as well.

Budget and treatment level would be helpful. Pictures of what you deem as vivid is also helpful.

wow, that etsy vendor has some gorgeous color stones....and the prices reflect that as well.....sigh.

blue sapphire is extremely popular and comes with a mark up I think because of that.
however, you've come to the right place for help!

They really do, they have some Demantoids and Red Spinels that rival most anything out there.

I was checking that Wilds sapphire over the weekend and as I saw the title of this thread I clicked in just to recommend it, but I see Greg beat me to it!

Wild's Global Minerals -- which I've always assumed is an offspring of W. Constantin Wild & Co. in Germany even tho' they don't come right out and say that -- offers more stones in its eBay store
http://stores.ebay.com/Wilds-GlobalMinerals
than on Etsy.

Sometimes the same stone (as with this sapphire) is listed for a lower price on Etsy; other times, it's the eBay listing which has the lower price, e.g.,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Phenomenal-...val-Perfect-Party-Ring-Gemstone-/121122466110
http://www.etsy.com/listing/150696690/phenomenal-32-carat-master-crafted

I'm wondering if anyone has attempted to use the price discrepancies as a negotiating tool, or if Wild's has otherwise indicated an willingness to negotiate downwards. FWIW, this sapphire has been listed on eBay since February 10.

Thanks for the replies, budget wise I'd like to keep around $1500 and here are a few images for color

Unfortunately, $1500 isn't a realistic budget for a 8 mm vivid blue sapphire, even if heated.

im ok with that, what price range should I be looking at?

8 mm is about 2+ ct which is around $5K for a heated vivid medium dark blue sapphire. This one isn't vivid but is closer to your other requirements.
7.7 mm heated for $2.2K

Has anyone dealt with this vendor before? Yowza, prestige pricing!

This one is 7.8 mm, 2.35 cts., heated, for $2980. It color shifts blue to violet in different lighting.

The examples you posted, Landshark, are fairly dark in tone. Especially if your wife wants it bezeled, you might want to look at sapphires a little lighter to be sure you find one that won't black out in low light. This thread https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/new-to-coloured-gemstone-buying-read-this-first.174284/ provides a ton of info on gem buying & has a section on sapphires. It's really helpful to take a look.

Neat that you're involved in the project -- makes it mean more & more fun.

Ummm....JF, I think you forgot to add the link to the sapphire. ;))

JF,
Do you think Wilds' pricing is too steep? Look at this one (listed at Litnon and Mastercut) for comparison.
8 mm heated Sri Lankan blue sapphire for $7.7K to $8.5K, depending on who you buy it from.

no, I don't think Wild's is too steep: I think they have a fair price on a very high quality stone .
I know we all want a bargain but those bargains come with trade offs.
high quality stones have high quality price tags.
and for most on pricescope, well, we just don't have the $ or inclination to step up into that level of ownership.
note that I said "we": I include myself in that.

Thanks for the post on "What to look for", I am doing the research and showing her some stone options. But I did notice just from looking around locally there is definitely a balance between a little dark and still "sparkly" and now its looks almost black.

you are learning already!
going so dark it goes black = extinction
many sapphires will have this.
some will be "blue/sparkly" if tilted so you see glints of that lovely blue.....still a pretty extinct stone.
I think you are now understanding why some stones command higher prices.....much higher prices.
I got very lucky when I purchased this 1.03 carat AU sapphire a few years back for $150 [I was in the right place at the right time and I do not believe I could buy this same stone for that now!].........but no illusions on my part because there is no way it compares to a really high quality sapphire:

Definitely true. You'll have to find your tolerance for where that line is. Not to mention the colour shifting. A high quality sapphire will still look attractive indoors and a mediocre quality sapphire will not look as pretty indoors.

Oh darn, sorry about no link. http://www.gemfix.com/sapphire_blue.html on the right, 40th row down. Mainly as an example of what you can find in that size & what it costs. I like the violet modifier, others may not, and for me, it's still a little dark -- I'd want to see it to tell how it would perform once set.

No, Chrono, there are some very nice sapphires on that site & prices seem not bad. Some of the other stones, though, I thought were too much. A tourm I'd bet goes extinct, yes, 7 cts., for $3k, for instance. That's a good price for a nice 7 ct one, but seems too high for the quality. Etc.

Thanks for the link! I sent out a few emails today and the majority of responses really offered no alternatives to my initial request. I'm open to spending more money, changing color, etc., but all i received so far was "good luck".

part of it is "the season".
this is prime shopping time for jewelry and/or stones.
vendors are also going to be very busy and committed to orders already placed and stones already spoken for.
don't give up!
being flexible re $ and color is good.
and if you can try and not be in too much of a hurry your chances of getting what you want increase.
the Tucson gem show is a big and if you haven't found what you're looking for by then you could have a vendor shop for you there.

Once again MZ is correct; the end of the year is a busy time for vendors, in addition to the preparation for various gem shows. Large round vivid blue sapphires aren't exactly a dime a dozen either, which is another reason why the responses have not been positive.

You said your open to changing color? Do you mean just a varying blue color? Or all together different?

As seems like yellow might get you to the size you'd like.

And sense your original request isn't going to work what exactly are you willing to sacrifice? Size? Color? You said you'd go up in budget, how much? Does it have to be round?

Just spoke with the capitan, hahaha, time isn't a factor at all because we are not in a rush, could wait until february happily. She does like the round sapphire approx 8mm due to the bezel halo setting but would opt for a lighter shade of blue in color. Budget, I could pay around $2500 if i had to. Thanks for all of these very helpful replies to my post. You guys are really top notch!

Oh! ok good. I was just concerned because its hard to find a stone to fit a specific bezel setting. But sounds like your on the right track.

Most of the 8 mm round vivid heated blue sapphires I found are in the $4K to $8K range. Something has to give to stay within your $2K budget. Most of the vendors either do not have rounds, the rounds are too small or are outside your budget. Gemfix seems to be the only vendor who carries a few lighter coloured round blue sapphires close to 8 mm within budget.

In my opinion, 8mm is huge. If you insist on staying in the 8mm size range you're going to have to make sacrifices, one of which being the stones color. A stone that is truly "vivid", 8mm and round isn't going to fit your budget. It boils down to which you desire more, quantity or quality.
