A $35K ring or a $35K car?

The car. We need to replace it. It's a 1999 Clio and it's getting to the point where we're considering replacing it. We'd planned on spending around half that on replacing it.

Ring! I just bought a '14 Honda Pilot Touring so...I'm good on the car front!

In the next 3 months? $8000-$9000 on earrings and $25k on a vehicle. I'd keep the extra $1k on the side in case my earring budget needs to be raised to $10k once the project gets underway :D.

Hmm - that's a tough one. My car has over 100 K miles, but I don't think it's ready to keel over just yet. Certainly within the next few years. Could I do 20K for the ring and 15k for the car later (assuming mine has a few K in trade-in value)? I guess it's obvious where my priorities are.

I would spend $35k on a car. I haven't ever spent that much on a car, but there are a couple I've loved and would like to own.
I would love a fun muscle car! I used to own a Mustang and it was very fun!
I still have 12 more payments on my current vehicle (mini van) and look forward to having no car payments. I won't buy another car for several years.

What I would like to do once the car is paid off is upgrade my ring, but don't think I could justify spending more than $10k on that.

If money is no object, I would spend 35k each on a car AND a ring!

DK :naughty:

Well, if that were an option I would spend 70K on the ring and keep the old car.

Missy, I swear. You're a girl after my own heart.

Well I wish I could spend that much on a ring, but I can't see that happening.

Picking up the new car tomorrow!

Which one would I take? The car... because mine is a coupe and we're thinking of having children in the near future.

Which one would I want?
RING!! ...but then I'd have to become a contortionist to put my future baby in the backseat -- oh wait, that's a no-no, right?? Dear Lord, help me if I have a child!!

Midlife crisis?...

Midlife crisis number two! When I was 34 and had my second DS I went to the car dealership and bought a brand new Mustang :D
It was difficult getting him and older dear son in and out but I had to have it
With-in a year I ended up buying a Jeep but kept the Stang! Sold both a couple of years ago and got a mini van.
Fast forward to now, for the past two months I've been obsessively (window) shopping for Dodge Challengers and Jeep Wrangler Unlimiteds!
I want one of each :cheeky:

Doubt I'll buy either but you never know...

car!

Be sure to buy one with the BIGGEST Hemi engine!... :appl: I am a Camaro fan, but wouldn't mind a BIG Hemi Cuda or both!...

I would definitely go for a ring because this will last a lifetime!!!

Right now I would actually take the cash for a car. I have done a lot of jewelry shopping, upgrades, and dress change recently. I'm ready for a new vehicle after driving around an SUV. Dh and I could defintely share a sports car. 35k wouldn't cover it but it would definitely be a nice down payment.

The car. I'm gonna hit 100,000 miles tomorrow on my corolla!
That is low mileage for a Toyota you can still drive it for another 100K miles. Last summer I bought a 2005 Lexus with 89K miles on the clock and it drives like a brand new car.

DF, not always true. Our 2002 Camry developed stripped bolts in the engine after 49K miles (not a typo). It cost more to fix it than the car was worth. We said screw it, donated it to charity, and bought a new 2014 Lexus RX450h (hybrid). That was very painful for me to write the check for it.

Hubby was pretty ticked off about this whole thing so he wrote to the CEO of Toyota in Japan. We got the "car is out of warranty" reponse and some money back. A Toyota should last more than 49K miles.

But to answer your question, I don't need anymore rings but did need a new car.

Hmmm, very unusual for a Toyota to have any major problems at 49K miles. Congrats on your new Lexus!.. Lexus loaned me a RX 450h when my wife's car was being serviced. The RX 450h is so quiet and ride so smooth for an SUV ... :appl:

Oh boy. Neither for me.

I couldn't justify either.

BUT assuming I COULD. It would depend on if I need a new car or not.

Ring. :D

Didn't even hesitate.

This is a really hard choice for me to make. If the option was put to me and the same option to my husband (each of us offered $35k to do what we want with), I know he would go for the car as we need to get him a new Jeep by the end of summer. As long as his daily commuter vehicle was taken care of, I'd go for the ring without guilt. $35k would buy me a forever ring, but a vehicle would wear out over time and have to be replaced, and the value of it would drop with every passing mile and year.

If the option was only presented to me, I'd have to go with a vehicle so that my family is taken care of.

RING!

A ring - although probably more like another FCD and then if there is anything left over a mounting for one of my FCD's.

Qualifying my post with my justification. A $35k car isn't just $35k. You have the cost of maintenance and taxes as well over the life of the vehicle. Rings on the other hand aren't taxed after the initial sales tax, only need repairs on occasion, and the only ongoing cost is for insurance. A ring also has a much longer lifespan than a machine.

In my income bracket, neither. Most i've paid for a car (including all taxes, etc) is 15K and most for a ring, just over 2K.
If I was FORCED to spend it on one or the other (like do that or turn over the money), would buy my Dad a car (because it is one of the few things he is really REALLY into).

We will need to replace our vehicle sooner than I will need to replace my ring. As it is a Honda at 130?K miles we plan to run it into the ground.

But don't worry, just give me the 35K, I'm sure I will spend it wisely

I just spent 12k+ on a diamond and setting and nearly keeled over doing it. :o Never thought that would happen and I place the blame squarely on PS. But it will be a glorious vision to my eyes so thank you! :appl:

But I did spend over 40k on a Hummer a few years ago and I had it 10 months. I have a car problem. DH knows it. I took my Expedition in to get an oil change and had to have my DH come to the dealership to check out the Miata I bought while waiting.

So I guess my answer is car all the way.

DF, but yeah, there is no such thing as a base Lexus, they come loaded with all these packages and options so you end up paying at least $10K more. We do like it though and have wondered why we didn't buy one earlier in life.

Well, considering my 1996 Honda is reaching 160,00 miles but does need some work, I'd opt to split that money, get a newer (but not brand new!) car for $10-15k, give myself $5k for a nice eternity band or small every day diamond hoop earrings and put the rest in to savings or a retirement fund! :)

Supposing it all had to go to one or the other though, the practical person in me would go for the vehicle so I wouldn't have to get a new one for another decade or two, because car shopping is a headache.

The car, though I personally could never justify 35K on either!

Yes, so true.

Well since I just bought an almost 35k car, I'll go with ring!!! :)

Definitely car. I love baubles, but I tend to spin my 1.51ct pear around in many situations, I can't imagine the size of the rock I'd choose with a 35k budget. Our car is 300 miles away from hitting 200,000 miles! ('95 Camry) Then again, we I had 35k to spend, we'd probably just use it as a down payment for a home, but if it has to be ring or car, we'd get 2 cars and a ring!
