A Visit to The Emerald District in Bogota Colombia

They are FINE "cost less than 100k" commercial quality...:twisted2:
They’re 10 carats each so I’m guessing at most, they are 5000 a karat because they are large although “commercial “:lol-2:

That’s about right. That’s commercial quality for minimally treated stones in Colombia. BUT — The average mall emerald here is 4-5 mm in that quality. I didn’t think to take pictures of these “commercial quality” gems I’ll do that tomorrow.

I picked these out from a vendor stall in the Emerald Trade Center. From left to right second best, best, third best, hardly an emerald.

You can see the ideal is quite dark. Remember these pictures are just relative. You cannot see the magic. The prices are without any negotiation. Assume 3200 Colombian pesos to the dollar. These are gringo prices.

I like the first one the best

First one as in the leftmost one?

Here, there isn't that much difference in the pricing between best and second best.

See, I look at those and I think even the "hardly an emerald" one seems like it's a nice gem. Maybe I'm just not gifted with the emerald-eye.

3200 pesos to the dollar ...I think I'm confused by the 3 decimal places.

So the darkest one is the best? I was confused a minute because I thought they were in order of quality at first. Thank you!!!

Sorry, I should have said that In Colombia a period is like our comma. The first one is 24 million pesos

9285D8CD-71EB-4CB4-9E0D-254F4A1AAD70.jpeg So am I to understand this is around $8k usd?

And a "hardly an emerald" is $1600.

I think I need to stay away from emeralds.

I'm surprised the differences aren't as massive as I thought it would be. My only area of experience/"expertise" with gems is pearls, and you get into pearl territory where a strand of excellent quality is $10,000 and true top gem quality of the same type of pearl is $250,000+ wholesale.

I still think these are too dark for my taste

Great picture!! This is that metallic effect, but the stone looks flat in photos. It needs to be seen in person!

That’s my favorite tone and color.

You have me wanting to do some math here...but I don't understand what 30% means!

#163 – 1.10cts – USD7678.12

#129 – 0.96cts – USD8375.00

#127 – 1.76cts – USD7700.00

#65 – 2.20cts – USD1687.50

Even the hardly an emerald is $850/ct. How nice or bad is this "hardly an emerald", in person?

That's the T L tone & saturation;)2!

There are many less expensive ones that look nearly and nice as these. The ones I first picked out as beautiful were lower quality than these (except the overpriced “hardly an emerald”). It’s just not possible to photograph the difference.

Tomorrow I aim to find a face up 8x6 or 7mm square that is less than $1000. Something that I would buy. Stay tuned

Can't wait to see what you find, happy shopping!

Would you be posting about the local food somwhere on PS too! Love to know the local food scene:cheeky:

George calls fine emerald color, “duck neck” color. Another bird metaphor, but at least this one is more obvious. Lol

Yes that’s nearly top quality. The certifying lab is the best in Bogota.
George still sends his emeralds to other labs including that one. Many of his gems have multiple European reports and AGL.

The price difference could be due to treatment level if you can’t find any significant difference in color , size, or quality overall.

Would you say Duck Neck is something like VslbG 5/6 or 6/6 or G 5/6 or 6/6? Just a guess without seeing the Gemset.

Here is the “ hardly an emerald”. On my hand and upside down measuring 8mm. I really like it. I’m going to check it will a loupe tomorrow and see it in natural light and then maybe then negotiate it down. No treatment. It is from Chivor. I need to be sure the glow is there and it doesn’t look like a tourmaline

I don’t know to be honest! I have to get closer to a male duck. I saw one the other day walking in a neighborhood lawn, but he quickly waddled away from the scary human. Peacock feathers remind me of that metallic bluish green too. Duck necks are definitely a metallic very slightly bluish green, but I couldn’t tell you the exact tone and saturation off my memory.

Correct. There is a big price difference between minimal to no oil and moderate oil.

Very pretty. Chivor material is typically lighter. Voce would prefer it. It looks like an emerald to me!

Almost a 12mm stone! That would make for an impressive piece of jewelry for a “hardly an emerald!”

Great price! I paid $1200 for my 2.75 ct Columbian emerald around 25 years ago, and I’m not sure of the treatment, but it hasn’t changed in appearance at all. I guess it would also be “hardly an emerald!”
