They could not have picked a worse time to predict a snow storm! I know this sounds petty and selfish, but I have an appraisal appointment tomorrow at 10 am with Martin Fuller and a 1 pm appointment at Quest.
39.gif

I called to confirm with Martin, and he said that they would call me to make alternate snow arrangements if necessary.

I know that I''ve waited this long to find my stone... what''s another week... but the suspense is killing me!

PrincessV - Aren''t you supposed to be picking up your ring on Saturday too??

What''s a girl to do?!!

Head out now.

Honestly, that''s awful.. Since I''m in California, and don''t really know what happens when a snowstorm hits, what other kinds of arrangements would you have to do?

Doesn''t Mother Nature have SOME NERVE!!!! Obviously she has never been engaged!! I''m looking forward to it myself but hope everyone gets their rings before being snowed in. We got an inch a couple of days ago which is alot for us(South east) and are expecting more this weekend. I''m like a child when it snows, It''s magical. I''m sure it''s because I rarely see any.

Hi -

I saw that you are from DC and was hoping that you might be able to recommend someone to tighten a loose baguette.
I am nervous about giving my ring to just anyone...for obvious reasons, but also want to make sure that the job is done properly. I would greatly appreciate your suggestions.

Best,
Simon

Hi Tiger. I''m planning to be at Quest tomorrow too, both to meet Princess V and to have my rings in for their routine checkup. I''m hoping the snow will hold off (or at least the bad stuff) until late afternoon or evening, but I have not had the weather on today so I''m note sure. How far from Quest/Martin are you?

I used to live in Upstate / Western NY, so my idea of a "snow storm" is REALLY different to what people consider to be a "storm" down here. Usually, if there''s more than 3 inches, the Federal government pretty much shuts down, offices are closed, and there will be a run on bottled water at the grocery store... please, it''s really not that bad.

We just don''t get much snow down here, so the city doesn''t have as much snow-removal equipment or know-how. Ploughing here is practically non-existent. Also, people didn''t grow up learning to drive in icy conditions, so traffic on the interstate slows to a crawl (assuming you can get out of your neighborhood) and cars smack into each other because people slam on the breaks when they feel their tires slipping.

It''s really just a mess.

Hey DiamondLil, I''m in the city - Dupont / U St., so not far at all. Who knows where Martin and Pete have to drive in from though...?!

weather.com has a "heavy snow warning" posted for DC.

They''re predicting "Few snow showers" starting at 9am tomorrow, turning into plain ''ol "snow" at noon and continuing well into Monday afternoon.

according to the weather report I heard- the snow is supposed to start early Sat morning and may last until Sunday morning.
There could be times when we get up to 2 inces per hour. It could be as much as 8 inches.
(sorry about the inconvenience)

Simon - I only recently moved to DC (3 months ago). I don''t personally know of a jeweler, but Quest, (703) 204 0111, would probably take care of it for you if you don''t mind driving out to the Tysons Corner area. A lot of P''scopers have rings made by them and are very happy with the quality of their work.

Yeah, one snowflake and they close the schools here. We are so unprepared for a big snow.

Dagonnit, Nan. I love snow, just not when I have plans!!!!!!
29.gif
I don''t get to shop in Tysons often, and I was so looking forward to a day out.

Tiger, Pete lives in No. VA, so he''s not far. I forget where Martin is coming from, but I would suspect he lives in VA too. Where I am in Southern MD, we don''t normally get as much snow, but if I''ll be driving into it, yuck!!! Plus, I hate the beltway even on a sunny day.
7.gif

DL, I heard that the snow up here should start after midnight tonight and accumulate 3-10 inches by Sunday morning, depending upon the location in the DC area. You should be getting less snow, but more sleet/ice, south of DC. Please be careful if you head to Quest in that. Of course, the forecasts here are more often wrong than right, so who knows.

Tiger, where did you live in western NY? I'm from Niagara Falls/Lewiston. You are so right about the raod conditions and drivers here. It's really a shame that more people in the DC area don't just stay home when there is any snow and let the rest of us who know how to drive in it have the roads to ourselves. You be careful too and good luck getting your ring.

dbs1, try IGS, Inc. (International Gem Services) if you're in Northern Virginia. They are in Vienna, have a great bench jeweler on premises, are a small enough operation that they wouldn't mind a job like that, and can be searched for on PS (albeit some older threads).

GK - I used to live in Rochester, NY. I went to college there and we had a network of underground tunnels connecting all the main buildings so that you wouldn''t have to brave the weather! I would not see the sun for months at a time...

Drivers were worse in Southern VA than they are in DC... I used to stay home to avoid the other drivers, not the snow! There''s no fear like spotting a bridge covered with ice coming up ahead and seeing red brake lights everywhere. If there is any snow in S. VA, cars will drive up and down each side of a 6 -lane divided highway in single-file.
3.gif
LOL!

Princessv has a 3 hour drive and her appointment isn''t until 4:00 I think. This sucks. Hopefully it won''t be a bad as they say.

It''s a small world. We have good friends who live in Hamlin, and the husband works for the U of R. They get some serious snow up there. They laugh at us here in MD/VA/DC with the way we *don''t* drive in snow.

You are right, GK, I should probably just stay home. I have an SUV, but I''m still nervous nelly. And I have to cross the Wilson Bridge to get to Quest -- the prospects aren''t lookin'' good.

Tiger, we had tunnels when I was in school in the Boston area too, but not when I was in Michigan. Trudging to class in 3-4 feet was a common occurence there, and we had snow storms into April. You are too right about the about the brake lights and driver panic, even in NoVa. Apparently this weekend is the anniversary of a 23 inch snowfall in DC in 1983. That one shut down the city for almost a week, and I had to dodge cars off of both sides of virtually every road just to get home from work.

Lisa, notwithstanding the inherent uncertainty in the weather reports, I told my family from Wilmington not to drive down tomorrow and postponed my son''s birthday party. Maybe Princess V should rethink?

Maybe she should but I know how dissapointed she will be. Bummer.

Come hell or high water...I''m getting my ring on Saturday!!
38.gif
If I have to abandon my car on the side of the road and start walking...I''ll make it there!
11.gif

Gah I''m soo annoyed at the snow!! Why can''t it snow any other weekend?!
29.gif

Luckily...I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4 wheel drive and all terrain tires thanks to Michigan. We''ll see tommorow morning when we wake up as to whether its bad.

Especially when she had the ring in her hands earlier this week!!!!!

Good luck Princess. Be careful.

Thanks GemKlctr!! Kaleigh and diamondlil I will be really disappointed if I don''t get it tommorow which is why Tyler says that we should leave really early to try to get it, plus he wants to re-propose at a nice restaurant. Aww, its sweet he''s going through all this trouble for my ring...no wonder I adore him!

Diamondlil I really hope I get to see you tommorow!

Tyler, Princess V, and Diamondlil, I am so sorry to hear that this stupid storm is going to affect you guys'' diamond plans. We''re predicted a noreaster here in RI with 6-12 inches predicted from Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. I just pray that everyone affected by this is safe and doesn''t lose power 9and gets their diamonds). God bless.

Hi there, I only got as far as this comment: {{{I used to live in Upstate / Western NY, so my idea of a "snow storm" is REALLY different to what people consider to be a "storm" down here. Usually, if there''s more than 3 inches, the Federal government pretty much shuts down, offices are closed, etc... please, it''s really not that bad. ... I also used to live in upstate/south central NY (near Elmira), and I also -sort of - laugh down here in the DC area at the reaction to snow. However, I am scared driving on the beltway in any conditions! They don''t even know how to drive in rain down here....
20.gif
I miss the easy traffic (i.e. non-existent traffic) up there!!!! And this storm is also sort of throwing a wrench into my hoped for start of looking for a new setting for my diamond.

I feel your pain. I''m just south of you guys in Richmond & I am in an open toed orthopedic shoe due to a toe sprain. So, I''m housebound until it all thaws. We went out to dinner & to replace my watch battery tonight so I could enjoy some sort of civilization before the snow starts. I''m originally from Texas so this snow stuff STILL freaks me out even though I''ve lived here quite awhile. People down here can''t drive on a clear day so they REALLY scare me when there is inclement weather.

And all your NYers, down in Texas, if there were FLURRIES aka, someone saw a flake in the air, we started closing up hehehehe. We just aren''t prepared for that kind of living. I had never seen or used a snow shovel in my life until we moved up here. Our first snow was a real experience, that''s for sure. If our neighbors & co-workers hadn''t told us what to do, after they stopped laughing, we might have had to hibernate until spring LOL.

Virginia,
PrincessV is absolutely making the trip, but the way I understand it, Quest sent the ring to Martin Fuller''s last evening to do an after-hours appraisal. PrincessV and T will be picking up the ring at Martin Fuller''s in the early afternoon. I''m sure they want to get back on the road before things get too bad.

I''ll postpone my trip to Quest. Now they are saying that So. MD will get more snow than the district, and since that is where I live, I should probably just stay home. As soon as the first flake hits the beltway and Wilson Bridge, people will be nuts, and I''d rather no risk MY vehicle getting crunched.

There is a gem/jewelry show at the Chantilly Expo Center next week (Fri,Sat,Sun) if anyone is interested. Once again, too bad we don''t have PM because I get a bunch of free entry tickets that I''ve been able to send out to PS members in the past. Can''t do that now!!
32.gif
I will be at the show on Friday for sure. That''s my usual routine with my other jewelry-obsessed girlfriends. I may be able to swing by Quest on our way to the show to have my ring checked. We''ll see what this week brings . . . .

Darnit this is one time I''m missing Michigan!! Well last night, Hap, Pete and Martin Fuller made a decision to send my ring over and get it appraised so I can try to pick it up at 12pm today. But DARNIT it''s snowing like mad outside and it''s only 7:30!
29.gif

Still going to try to make it Elizabeth but we won''t be at Quest at 4 anymore just at Martin Fuller''s at 12 (hopefully)
39.gif
If you drive, drive safe! I know Quest will be open.

tiger007g: I hope you''re safe if you drive!

I''m in No VA and grew up around here. We almost never get out for snow and I work for the Fed Govt. I work outside the Beltway too where we usually get more. They haven''t closed our building in a few years. I have driven to and from work in much more than 3 inches several times. I also drove my kids to school in snow more times than I can count. VA Beach actually did shut down one year when I lived there, for 2 inches.

diamondlil, I was at Tyson''s yesterday, but didn''t find anything. Also, you guys in So MD are supposed to get more snow than us. I actually grew up in PG county MD and we always got less snow than out where I live now.

The forecast has been upped by both NOAA and Weather.com to show us getting 8-12 in the DC area. Not a smal amount to sneeze at. But, it''s no supposed to be bad til this evening. I lived in Rhode Island in ''82 for a few months and we got 24 inches in April and they closed everything.

Princess V,

Good luck and safe travels. It''s close to 9 am and the weather doesn''t look so bad in N. VA. I am off to the grocery store. I have my trusty MDX that is good in snow. Hopefully they will close Sunday School tomorrow. Then, we''ll be off for the day to Ski Liberty. Yeah!!!!

Truly, best of luck and safe driving ladies. No little snowstorm''s going to get between a PSer and her bling!!!

Oh my, PrincessV, already snowing . . . It''s almost 10:00 so you may be on the road right now. We''ll all be thinking of you and wishing you luck in your travel. Please post when you return home safe and sound.

Momoftwo,
I remember you are another PG County girl like me!
2.gif
We live very close to the Chesapeake Bay now and we hardly get any snow --something to do with being so close to the water.

Today, sounds like we will be getting what I consider a nice snow -- not too much, not too little. Enough to play in with the kids and hopefully heavy enough to build a snowman.
9.gif
No snow coming down yet, but it won''t be long now . . . .

How much does it cost if you don''t have the tickets? I would like to go, although I can''t say for sure yet.
