I recently fell and I have a black eye. Cue the spousal abuse jokes. :roll2: WHY do people feel the need to go there? If am am abused, it's horrible. If I'm not, it's just not a funny thing to imply. I get so uncomfortable when people say something like that, that I no immediately just point to it and say I fell.

Several years ago, I slipped and missed the last few stair in the house. I was late to work, and my supervisor asked - in front of several people - if my husband pushed me. Again, not funny, for so many reasons! I know it was funny to joke about wife beating back in the 50s and 60s, which is really twisted.

Are people that uncomfortable when they see a black eye? Why is abuse so "funny?"

Maybe some use the joke as a way of feeling out if there is an issue rather than just asking directly.

I'm a klutz, big time, and my doctor always asks me if things are ok at home when he examines me because between the cat scratches and self-imposed bruises, I look like I went a few losing rounds in a fight ring.

I would say the same as @Matata, that it's a 'jokey' way of asking if you/your situation is ok.

i dont know,
my mother brought us up not to make fun of other people's misfortune with regard to accidents

i am thankful this did not happen to me recently as a few months ago i got an insect bite by my eye or something, it might have been from a tiny wee zit i popped
and it swelled up something terrible -no bruising but it didnt look nice for about a week
it happens occasional every couple of years so it could be an allergy, ive learnt to ring up and warn work when it happens, usually goes down by the afternoon but this time it was a week

when i got on the bus a lady i chat to came over and put her arm around me and asked if i was ok - it didnt actually hurt it just looked awful
i was so embarresed to think someone might think Gary would ever do anything like that, he usually looks out the antihisamene
the customers at work said it looked better than the day before

your supervisor is an idiot, what if that had actually happened ? (not meaning to imply)-at least my lady was nice and concerned

another time at my old job i was the mother of the nuts and bolts, they are filthy and oily, i really learnt a lesson as without thinking i scratched my face -this was well before covid
well holy cow mt Vesuvius happened, it did look awful, my customers down in the timber dept were nice
but i had to go up to hardwear and for some reason the supervisor up there decided to tell the world up there how awful i looked, i was dying up there, i was however rescued by a co-worker who ushered me back to our dept and just saved tears arriving

i dont know why people dont consider other people's feelings more

not in my book, its completly thoughtless especially if they ask in front of other people
i once chipped a tooth on peanut butter, a front tooth, my nice boss asked me what happened in private

oh dear i seem to have a few stories like this

I think people make these jokes bc they are so out of touch with political correctness. They obviously have never know women who were abused and do not consider that you are. I think it’s just outdated humor.

I've been in that weird place with bruises and comments. I had a detached retina (big deal, very crazy experience); a dog pull me down steps to get to snow, smashing a front tooth (another tough fix); and many more mishaps while doing more than I should've ever done preparing for weather storms. I regret that work, I was dumb! But people don't realize that these things can happen easily until they do.. Feel better soon.

Thanks for the replies. I'll just chalk it up to others being insensitive and lame. It's just weird it's people who know us. He would never so maybe that's why it's "funny." Not.
