I really wanted to go with round so it matches her necklace and engagement ring, and ruby is significant as it is my son's birthstone... otherwise I probably would have gone with sapphires as I think blue looks better on her =P

The clarity won't be as apparent on her ear lobes. It's just hard to get close enough to someone to really appreciate the clarity of earings. The lack of sparkle will be noticeable unfortunately. But all of these are going to be very small stones as ruby is dense -- try cutting out a piece of paper of the same size as the stones. And thus again it really won't be that noticeable.

Whats more the cost of setting with some daimonds is typically non negligible -- enough so that you can afford to spend a bit more on the stones and still have the whole budget look kind of comensurate. So I'd have picked the more hazy reddy-pinky gemfix stones over lab stones.
