I have been looking for this info on here and cant find it.

Does anyone know how hard amethyst is and would it do ok in a six prong setting or should it be bezel set? I am rather new to color gemstones and I''m just trying to find out which gem would make the best right hand ring for me. I was thinking topaz but when I talked to DH about it he was shocked that I didnt pick amethyst since my fav color is purple. I would be wearing this ring daily and I am just not sure how it would hold up. Any info would be great. THANKS!!

amethyst has a moh's hardness of 7. are you hard on rings? i have seen amethyst hold up very well when prong set, but then again i'm not really rough on rings. do you have a design in mind?

You better go with a purple sapphire. Sapphires are tough stones. By the way, what size are you looking for and how intense (intense, light, dark)? What color (pinkish purple, viloletist purple, and etc.)? Do you have any picture to show? Amethysts are very inexpensive stones. The cost of small amethysts is actually the cost of cutting service only. You can find small amethysts as low as one dollar or less percarat (depending on the quality, but still, they are very cheap no matter where they are from).

I am looking for more of a violet purple not pink purple. I never really thought of a purple sapphire! Anyone have any ideas where I could find one of those??

Maybe Barbara has more like these:

Definitely take a look HERE - three or four nice purple sapphires of different shapes (round, emerald, cushion...) in the same place are not that common.

There are a few at Simplysapphires.

It may not be fair to compare these choices based on the photos only because sellers use vastly different photography techniques. But each of the stones seems well worth inspecting in person, IMO.

There are more to see online, of course. Including Walter Arnstein 's site, where the next piece comes from.

Sorry for the huge pictures, this is how they are formated on the sellers' sites...

And this... this is a violet spinel described as somewhat dark but appealing by the seller

Hope some of this helps !
